Coupon match up sites vs. Jill's Deals of the Week

I'm new to couponing & really love how the Deals of the week has all the best deals at all the stores, right there! Only problem I have is that I want to shop on Sunday as soon as I get the coupons because if I sort through them on Monday, I find most of the items are already sold out by monday afternoon, not to mention it's easier for me to shop on sundays. But I have found most of the coupon match up sites to not have as good of deals/coupons matched up to sales as on Jill's Deals of the Week. I have looked at all of them except the ones where you have to pay, like Savings Angel, and I also find them to be confusing. Couponmom.com seems to be the easiest one for me to understand & follow, but again, I find Jill has better deals listed & more coupon options. I would only probably find couponmom useful if I had to find other deals on items on my grocery list that I needed to get. So I am wondering, does savings angel have the same deals & coupon selection that Jill's blog has? Or am I better off just waiting for the Deals of the Week to post on Monday morning in order to make sure I'm getting the best bargain? Sorry if this has been discussed before. I went as far back as I could tolerate in the forum & didn't find my exact answer I was looking for. Your help is greatly appreciated!! :-D

I've been doing this for only

I've been doing this for only a couple months but what works for me is reading this forum/blog and others (like Mashupmom-blog, afullcup-messageboard, couponmom-messageboard, etc.) all week, make notes on what deals are coming up or currently running and get most of my papers Saturday from Menards. That way I can cut all my coupons Saturday when I have more time. I usually don't do my grocery shopping until Monday but will do Walgreens and CVS Sunday because it's more likely they'll be the first to run out of the good deals. Plus I like to use Walgreens RR at Jewel the next day!

Learning something new!

Wait a second! You can use register rewards from walgreens at jewel?!!? I had no idea! That suddenly makes me happier about using sales at walgreens where you get them! I always figured I wasn't sure if I'd use them soon enough at walgreen's since I don't go there very often. I just started to get the sunday chicago tribune to get coupons (my first & only newpaper I get delivered to my house, as well as my only current source of coupons aside from online printables). What papers are you able to get on saturday from menards? Do they have the same coupon inserts as the sunday tribune? I will have to start reading the blogs more & check out the others so that I can get out there sooner! And one last question, I always assumed no one new the deals for the upcoming week until the sunday flyers came out in the tribune & then everyone did their matching up after they got that. How do people find out about upcoming sales sooner? (I told you I was new at this!) You have no idea how much your help is appreciated! Couponing is a confusing world for me still! :)

Yep, you can use RR at Jewel!

Yep, you can use RR at Jewel! They're technically a manufacturer coupon but I believe Jewel is the only one who accepts them.

Menards and Dollar General (or is it the Dollar Store?) get the actual Sunday Tribune on Saturdays. Same exact paper you get delivered Sunday mornings. My husband runs out and gets them for me every Saturday. He says that's his contribution to our grocery shopping. LOL

And there are blogs online that get the CVS & Walgreens ads weeks in advance sometimes. Although the actual CVS & Walgreens websites also have their upcoming sales flyer on their sites a few days ahead too.

Thank you!

That's great to hear! I have both a dollar general & menard's kind of by me (I live out in the middle of no where so it's as close as it's gonna get! lol). That will help me out a lot with getting a head start on the game of things! Hopefully I'll be grabbing those great deals before they're all gone! :D

The difference is...

Matchup sites like Savings Angel, Coupon Mom (Grocery Game is another one) are spreadsheeting the entire ad, and in some cases, the entire store, or many of the unadvertised/clearance sales. They will do matchups on everything, even what might not be the "hottest" deals of the week. I blog what I believe are the "best of the best," but let's say you want to buy pasta sauce this week - you "need" it. If it isn't super-cheap, I will probably not blog it. But the spreadsheets are going to blog everything and match it up for you, even if it isn't the "hottest" deal.

Make sense? Their shopping lists are often up by Saturday afternoon or Saturday evening.

Coupon Mom only blogs what's IN the ad (no unadvertised sales) and only matches up the insert coupons and major printables, not All You magazine or the individual manufacturers' sites, so she's a little different than Grocery Game or Savings Angel, which are going beyond that. Savings Angel is really the best of the three at scouring the web and all of the manufacturers' sites for individual printables, etc so that you don't have to. It really depends how in-depth you want your planning to be.

As far as your statement that I have "better deals listed and more coupon options" -- I try! :) Thanks for the compliment.

I think that's the difference between writing a blog and creating a spreadsheet though. Many "deal of the day" blogs are aggregators -- they cut and paste their info from other boards around the web and don't actually try the deals out. I shop regularly at the stores I blog, and I like to make sure the deals are working before I write. And, there are some deals you discover only by visiting stores and doing them. I try to provide the best, quality information for my readers.

The question I hear often is why Mondays and not Sundays for "Deals of the Week?"

When I began blogging "Deals of the Week," it was always posted on Tuesday mornings (for about two years - my longtime readers will remember this!) as I wished to keep Sunday as a non-working day. It was extremely difficult for me to shop all of the stores' sales on Monday before I blogged about them, and still get "Deals" written up at a reasonable time on Monday -- plus, at the time, my "Deals of the Week" radio segment aired on Tuesdays, so the writeup went live on Tuesday mornings to correspond with that.

Over the past year, I did change "Deals" day to Monday instead of Tuesdays. My family deserves an enormous thanks for understanding that I have to give up most of my Sunday now to shop and write in order to get everything up by Monday morning.

I have had a lot of new users email me lately nearly demanding that I post the Deals on Sunday mornings. There is simply no way I could post Deals on Sunday mornings, because I not only need to get the papers, ads, and coupon inserts on Sunday, I then spend my day shopping at the stores and researching, writing down prices of anything NOT in the ad. Lately, Dominick's runs sales with none of the prices in the ad (the Buy 4, Save $4 cereal sale this week is an example.) I am not able to get those prices until the store tags the shelves and I physically go there to get them.

Another example - the Meijer vitamins sale looked good this week, but to really know if the B1G1F will overlap with the $8 Catalina before writing about it, I have to go to the store and try.

If I want to thoroughly blog the Sunday sales, there is simply no way to get the Deals up first thing Sunday morning -- those sales just started at the stores. And, there are often things that look good in the ad but aren't working once you get there. (More examples: Walgreens Lunchables sale looked like it had potential this week, but none of the sandwiches in the store's sale matched the coupons available - didn't blog it. Ditto the Dole Fruit Parfaits that are $1 in the Wags ad -- but none of the stores have them in stock. They'd be a steal at .25 each, but after learning that our area stores don't regularly carry them, I didn't blog it. I've learned from experience that if I DID blog deals like these that don't actually work once you get to the store... the "hate mail" just pours in. ["You said these were on sale but they weren't at my store and you made me waste gas!" Things like that. People who are just learning to coupon are extremely intolerant of deals not working.]

Then, I go home, sort through all of my notes, and write for hours. :)

So... that's probably more than you wanted to know about the backstory of what goes into blogging each week's Deals for you guys. I do post them as soon as the writeup's complete. If that's at 6pm on Sunday night, that's when they go up. They will -always- be up by 6am Monday morning, but they're often up hours earlier.

Jill, just a quick note about

Jill, just a quick note about Dole Fruit Parfaits- they do have them now. They are in a weird spot by the refrigerators on the side wall. Upright stand holds about 5 cups wide and 1 deep.

Cool, thank you!

I'll get them added. On Sunday, my store said it wasn't a "normally-stocked" item so I had let it go.

Like I said, it's a tough call when something looks good in the ad but there's a chance people will never be able to do the deal...

Thanks for your response!

Thanks for your response! I wasn't expecting a reply for you Jill..Guess I expected you to be a super busy woman between all that you do! :) I completely understand why the Deals of the Week come on mondays & don't expect it to be posted any sooner! I have thought about it all before & was thinking I'm surprised it gets posted as soon as it does! I know if it were up to me, I'd need days of shopping the sales before I could get it all figured out to share with others! haha I haven't even thought of checking sunday nights though to see if it was up already, so maybe I'll start checking for it then incase it's up early & shoot for shopping first thing in the morning, because I really enjoy reading your blog for deals much better! Plus, I greatly appreciate someone telling me if something is a great deal or not. I've never paid much attention to prices before this! I just know I'd get to the register & sigh everytime! haha But thanks so much for your advice! I think I'll try savings angel for the needed items (Thank you for pointing out that that's the best of the 3. I was wondering if it was worth the money.) & wait til your deals are posted so I can get a more in depth list! Thank you very much for all that you do! You've been a lifesaver for so many people during these tough times!!!!
