If there is anyone out there who is not aware June 1st is the day that Cook County is adding a STEEP tax for soda’s, sports drinks and tea’s. It will be a penny an ounce… so a 12 pack of soda will have an EXTRA $1.44 added to the price and all the regular taxes.
Jewel has a lot of their soda’s on sale now, you may want to stock up.
Thanks for the reminder. Yes, Jewel’s prices are GREAT right now for 12-packs.. Next week’s actually says on the front page “Cook County Sweetened Beverage Tax of $0.01 per Ounce will be added at checkout” for the ads in Cook County….
The great thing is… that this tax doesn’t apply to the 900,000 folks on SNAP.
SNAP is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – federal food stamp program.
They can continue to by the drinks this tax applies to & not pay that additional tax.
This will cost Cook county $23 to $24 million.
The tax is project to bring in $200,600,000.00 for Cook county.
The irony is that this tax is supposed to curb behavior for better diets.
Many low income families already eat less healthy diets.
We’ve all seen people in line at the store buying pop with SNAP.
And this tax will not apply to them, so they will be the segment not changing to healthier habits, while the most of the population will that will continue to shop in Cook country.
Personally, I will of course buy the unhealthy stuff like Vitamin water, pop, & Tea, etc, in DuPage, Kane, & McHenry counties & Wisconsin.
I really feel for the stores on the Cook county boarder who’s business will yet decline once again due to cheaper tax across the street.
