The day before you posted this, I had a funny conversation about this very thing! My teenage son had a bunch of friends over to watch a game, and I discovered that they had previously discovered the “snack closet” (my stockpile). Apparently every time they come over, they like to check it out and see what’s new (but to their credit, they just look and never take anything)! They think it’s hilarious, and were teasing me a little about it. I told them if there was ever an emergency where nobody could get to the store, my house was the place they wanted to be. And then I teased the ringleader back and told him he was just jealous of my stockpile. After a few seconds, he nodded and said very seriously “You’re right, I really am.”
But in all seriousness, my heart goes out to everyone who has been affected by all these terrible natural disasters. And to those who are still suffering, with no power or water. It’s good to hear that a stockpile helped some people, who were then able to help their neighbors in a time of crisis.

I love this story! My children’s friends also know that our house has more than the average quantity of “stuff” on hand at any given time. My daughter’s college age friends show up when they are running out of deodorant, air fresheners, or other freebies, because they know I’ll open the door and let them go shopping :) You just never know though when you will encounter a power outage or something much worse, and it never hurts to (at the very least) keep canned foods, bottled water, pasta and the like on hand just in case.
There have been so many stories of people surviving the disasters and the other people who have opened their hearts, wallets, and lives to help others. I was really touched that some emailed to credit -me- for their preparedness — I was so humbled.
