Long before Junie B. Jones, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Big Nate, and all of the other books my children currently enjoy, there was Ramona Quimby. I grew up reading this series when I was a child, and my sister and I enjoyed them so much that my mother saved all of our Ramona books. My now-18-year-old daughter grew up reading the same copies I did. Last month my 7 and 9-year-old sons picked up “Beezus and Ramona” and began reading it to each other at bedtime each night.

Fast-forward a month, and they’re four books into the Ramona series (plus they’ve read three books in Beverly Cleary’s Henry Huggins series of books, which Ramona makes appearances in too.) These books are hilarious, engaging, and timeless. My sons are already lamenting the day they “run out of Ramona books” to read.

Amazon lists the Ramona books in its “100 Children’s Books To Read In a Lifetime” list too. Hearing my children reading these books to each other at night and laughing out loud at Ramona’s antics… well, is there any better feeling than watching your children engage with a book that way?
