Today is our daughter’s 19th birthday! We love this gorgeous girl and are so proud that she’s grown up to be such a beautiful, smart, and fun woman.
However, she also has a prankster side. For Christmas this year, she started a new tradition in our family by giving us gifts that were slightly… “surprising?” For example, my husband was (I think) delighted to receive a copy of “The Wiz” soundtrack on vinyl:
If I recall correctly, he said “Wow… what made you think I needed this?”
Well, we searched and searched for the perfect gift for HER this birthday season.
Here she is with a brand-new copy of Better Homes and Gardens’ best recipes of 1987! I felt so lucky to find this new-old-stock book a mere 28 years after it was published. In this photo, you can just see the excitement radiating from our daughter’s face.
I have to say, looking for the perfect bad gift, in many ways, is even more fun than buying regular gifts!
Wait until you see some of the delightful recipes in this book too…
“Salmon Zucchini Pate.” Nope. Or, how about a quiche with a potato chip crust?
Gorp cupcakes. “Pronto Chicken and Grapes.” These recipes are “nifty,” indeed!

Reminds me of recipes in my aunts old cookbooks. If you never heard of “aspic” look it up and trust me its not something you’ll be making for the superbowl party. I have an older better homes and garden with that aweful looking salmon pate in it too. If your book has a recipe for cream of mushroom soup its really good. Great tradition and thanks for the laugh and Happy Birthday to your daughter
