Grr, I absolutely HATE how Meijer handles coupons at the register for the Buy 10, Get 1 free deals, especially with the personal ones they mail to you at home. I made sure that I put my FREE item as the 11th, had coupons for nearly everything else. I visually saw the screen say “Carrots- FREE ITEM” as I rang things through at self- checkout. Trouble came as soon as I asked the cashier to help me with Meijer’s coupon for my free box of Meijer tissues. When she scanned it, all of a sudden the tissues became my free item and the carrots suddenly rang up as $1. The person helping me was adamant that I had to get another item in my order since now I didn’t meet the minimum of 10 items, since my tissues were free. It was late, I hadn’t eaten dinner, and even the person at customer service said I HAD TO GET ANOTHER ITEM. Long story short, I am now the owner of a second bag of carrots.
Jill, what is the fine print and wording of the deals? The fine print on the manufacturer’s coupons they mail that are based on your purchasing history say they “exclude clearance, limit one coupon for that item per transaction, not to be combined with other discount coupons.” It’s honestly ridiculous to suddenly change the pricing of a product just because I happen to have a coupon on another product. Certainly if I were paying cash and had zero coupons, this wouldn’t be an issue. I wish I had remembered this when trying to explain to the staff, but blood sugar was running as low as my patience.
Would you recommend that I just work around the issue by paying with no coupons, then bringing the receipt and all coupons directly to the customer service counter? Sometimes I shop late, but this will mean that I’ll have to definitely shop before the CSC closes at 10:00 pm.
Thank you for your help and advise.

UGH. The 10-for-$10, get the 11th FREE sales are absolutely crazy for punishing shoppers for using coupons in the first place. I have not had the same issue that you did, as I’ve never had a Meijer coupon for a free item that so radically screwed up the 10-for-$10.
This is just crazy! So, somewhere in the system, their registers are programmed to reject (completely?) an item that’s free with a Meijer coupon as counting as a 10-for-$10 item at all.
The trouble is that there is no written policy (anywhere, ever that I’ve found) for how they handle the 10-for-$10 and coupons. Even the caveat that I post each time we have one of these sales is based on my own experiences and my readers’ experiences – nowhere does Meijer tell you that you won’t get credit for a manufacturer coupon if it happens to be the 11th item scanned on the belt.
As for going to the counter to post-redeem coupons, it’s not a bad idea IF your store will allow it. My local Meijer (Algonquin) does not post-redeem coupons under any circumstances. Something doesn’t ring correctly at the counter? Too bad – you completed your transaction and left the lane.
I would confirm with your store though that they will allow you to post-redeem. I’m really sorry this happened to you — these are the kinds of things that I would bet that the higher-ups at Meijer have no idea are going on at all.

I think I have your solution since this happened to me twice since shopping at Meijer for the buy 10 get 11th free sale. I tried to post redeem after the fact and they DID allow it (my store is fairly new and they really want our business!) The CS told me to wait to scan your Mperks until AFTER you scan all of your order. (or hand them at the regular lines your phone to scan at the end) It will already take off the FREE item and then your coupons will all scan correctly. If the paper store mailed coupon changes it, have the clerk attending the self check lanes override it, because they do that for me all the time when a coupon requires assistance. That happens a lot when I use a coupon (paper) on a clearance item. Hope this helps!
