Reader Janet brought a post to my attention on a few other blogs (Yes We Coupon and I Heart CVS among them) that stated CVS’ coupon policy had changed, noting that ExtraBucks and CVS store coupons from the Coupon Center machine in store could not be used together. The example given was this: A shopper wishes to buy $20 worth of merchandise. He or she has a $4-off-$20 CVS coupon and $16 in ExtraBucks.
At CVS, shoppers have always been able to use these together. There’s an email going around from CVS Customer Relations though stating that shoppers could not use these together and would need to purchase $36 worth of merchandise to use both in the same transaction.
This didn’t sound right to me — and a glance at CVS’ coupon policy did not reveal anything new or out of the ordinary. I reached out to CVS to clarify.
(Full disclosure – I have had a great relationship CVS corporate as a CVS ambassador blogger for many years. I’ve attended CVS blogger events and updates at their Rhode Island headquarters and locally over the years — we’ve got another CVS blogger event coming up this month. CVS does a great job of keeping their bloggers in the loop with what’s going on with in-store policies and promotions. I’ve even starred in a commercial for them! I really value my relationship with CVS, because they make it very easy to get answers to take questions like these right to the top. That said…)
Here is CVS corporate’s reply:
Thank you for reaching out and bringing this to our attention! We understand there has been some confusion around this topic recently but we can confirm there have been no recent changes to our Coupon Policy, or procedures around ExtraBucks Rewards. For more information, please give us a call at 1-800-SHOPCVS to speak with a customer relations team member. You can also refer to our Coupon Policy online here: https://bit.ly/PLjCAV.
On another note, if you haven’t downloaded the CVS app, you may wish to — beginning with the 10/11 ad, there will be new CVS store ecoupons within the ad to stack with manufacturer coupons. Here’s a sneak peek:
Get ready for the Dawn sale by printing this .25 coupon for the sale! Stack it with the .25 app coupon and the Dawn will be yours for just .49!

I have tried in the past to sign up for the mobile perks like get $5 off when you sign up. I was unable to complete the process anf was told by cvs customer service at the 800# that I have to get my prescriptions there in order to sign up. I dont have any rx so I can’t sign up for it. Do you have input on this?
Coupon Maven says
That’s not true at all — I don’t have any prescriptions at CVS and continue to use the app without any issues – just download the app and link it to your ExtraCare card number. That’s it :) It has nothing to do with prescriptions.

Katie, I was able to add the app and link it to my Extra Care card pretty easily, but I already had the Pharmacy Rewards activated, so I don’t know if that would’ve stopped me had I not, but the $3 offer I received didn’t mention that being necessary in the terms.
I’m sure glad CVS hasn’t changed their policy. The ability to stack coupons like this keeps me coming there instead of making the trip to Wal-Mart.

>>I’m sure glad CVS hasn’t changed their policy.<< Me too. CVS didn't say so, but I suspect the email going around may have been the opinion of who wrote it, or perhaps he didn't fully understand the question the way a regular couponer would. ExtraBucks have always been like "CVS Cash" and functioned just like cash.

Cvs is no longer giving normal coupons to coupons shoppers they r limiting them to 2 cvs coupons per week instead of the ones they normally gave out 5 18 & more then 1 time per week so yes they have changed their coupons
Coupon Maven says
That isn’t the issue at all — this has nothing to do with how many coupons come out of the Coupon Center machine each week.
The issue going around on the web was whether or not you could use a CVS dollars-off coupon and ExtraBucks in the same transaction. Yes, you can, and their coupon policy has not changed. One need only read the policy posted on CVS’ site to verify that there have been no revisions to it.
Erica says
have you noticed how hard it is to get a direct answer from cvs? they say the policy hasn’t changed – but this issue was never addressed in the official policy to begin with.
Coupon Maven says
I didn’t really have any difficulty getting an answer from corporate — they responded within a few hours. I agree this issue wasn’t/isn’t spelled out in their policy in way the letter that’s going around is, but corporate assured me nothing has changed, either at the store level or higher up.
I wonder if a shopper just had an unusual experience with a cashier at the store level – emailed corporate, got an equally confusing answer, and then the issue started going around the blogs.
