Grocery Deals
Note: In a RARE instance, many of last week’s Jewel‘s sales continue through this Wednesday. I’m reprinting these, and in the case of the $15/$30, adding a few more matchups for you too…
Still running! See that B1G1F coupon for Fannie May ice cream pints in the 8/2 SS insert? They’re currently on sale at Jewel for $4.99, B1G1F. And when you use a B1G1F coupon during a B1G1F sale, you will buy none and get TWO for free! The coupon’s value of $4.99 “pays” for the $4.99 cost of two pints… and you get two free ice creams! Delicious! (The ice cream sale is scheduled to run through 8/15- and stores are running out of stock. GET RAINCHECKS just in case, as the coupons have long expiration dates.)

With the deals above, buying the total dollar amount required (NOT including tax! Make sure you are over, pre-tax) will generate your Catalinas. However, you can potentially save even more money on these already great deals.
If you are VERY NEW at couponing and not comfortable doing a high-level Catalina deal differently than what the ad specifies, skip this and move on to the Dominick’s deals for this week. But if you are comfortable with a higher-level deal…
My black belt couponers know that these deals typically work differently at Jewel than at any other store.
VERY IMPORTANT: If you have never done a high-level Catalina deal at Jewel before, please read this short overview of the way the price structure works. In a nutshell, if you base your $30 on the non-Preferred prices, you can save even more money and spend less out of pocket.
It is entirely up to you if you would like to work the deal in this way, but understand that IF you do, and the Catalina does not print, you can NOT go to the service counter and ask/demand that they reimburse you. You are working this sale in a different way than the ad specifies, and you’re on your own if you choose to do this. Know that you are accepting ANY outcome, including getting NO Catalinas.
You can mix and match any items in the list to get to that $30 mark. It’s important to remember that the non-preferred prices vary at EVERY store, and in some cases there are three prices (shelf, sale, and Preferred) on each item. If there is a fourth price (“Big Relief,” this is the price you use.)
If this makes no sense or is the least bit confusing to you… do NOT do the deal in this way. These high-level Catalina deals can be very confusing, especially when you’re new at this. If you are new, use the PREFERRED price only, and you’ll get the Catalina every time.
But if you’re a “black belt” couponer and want to maximize your savings… here are some of the best deals. You will also note that there are many items in the deal that are not advertised – thanks to Tracey for the spreadsheet. Again, if you use these scenarios and do not get your Catalina, do NOT go to Customer Service and ask them to make it right for you. You WILL NOT have purchased what the ad states that you must. Again, YOU are taking the risk on these deals. You must be willing to accept ANY outcome without complaining, even if it means not getting any Catalinas at all.
Black Belt Deals for the $30/$15
(Remember to ALWAYS, ALWAYS verify regular/sale/big relief/preferred prices at the PRICE SCANNER for YOUR store before relying on these quantity breakdowns. This cannot be stressed enough. It is never fun to be pennies off from a deal because your store has an item priced a little lower than others.)
And, remember to roll your Cats! Take the $15 you get and go right back and use it to bring your out-of-pocket down on your next round of items.
The Breyers ice cream deal for my beginners
Now, despite all the warnings, I KNOW there will be people reading who are brand new and want to get in on this. This one’s for you. No thinking, VERY low risk, VERY high chance of getting your Catalinas :)
Buy 5 Breyer’s 1.5qt ice creams ($3 each.)
Use 2 printable $1 coupons
Pay $13 and get $15 back. FREE icecream and a small moneymaker!
A cake mix and frosting deal
Buy 8 Betty Crocker frostings ($1.50 each) and 9 Betty Crocker cake mixes (need 9 to get over the $30 non-Preferred prices.)
Pre-coupon, you’re at $21. Now, use as many coupons as you have from above.
With 2 .50-off coupons pay $20 and get $15 back. $5 for 9 cake mixes and 8 frostings!
Hellman’s Mayo deal
Buy 6 bottles of Hellman’s ($2.50 each)
With NO coupons, pay $15 and get $15 back. FREE Mayo!
Or, use as many .60 coupons as you have.
With 3 coupons, pay $13.20 and get $15 back. Mayo moneymaker!
Honey Nut Cheerios, Honey Kix, or Cookie Crisp deal
Buy 8 boxes ($16.)
Use as many General Mills and cereal-specific coupons from the notes above.
With four $1 off 2 coupons, pay $12 and get $15 back. Cereal moneymaker! There are lots of coupons out for this one, plus any “$1 off General Mills cereal” Catalinas you may have.
NOTE: Some stores may need 10 boxes – again, CHECK prices. If you have $3.99 as the regular price, you can use 8. $3.29 – need 10 – and so on.
Bertolli Organic pasta sauce deal
Buy 7 Bertolli Organic pasta sauces, 24 oz. (MUST be organic!)
Pay $14 and get $15 back. Pasta sauce moneymaker!
Macaroni Grill dinner deal
Buy 6 Macaroni Grill dinner kits ($3.50 each.)
Use as many $1 coupons as you have.
With 3 coupons, pay $18 and get $15 back. CHEAP dinners!
All Detergent deal
This is the BIG one everyone’s been talking about. It’s also the one causing the MOST problems this week, because…
… some of the varieties on the shelf are unadvertised clearance priced at $3.29-$3.69 a bottle. Clearance items will not work as nicely for this deal, as the Clearance price is the ONLY price on the item. There is no price spread from the big relief ($5.49) to the preferred price ($3.50) to tip this enough in our favor.
If you still want to try, I would pay CLOSE attention to the UPCs on the spreadsheet. Many bottles on the shelf look identical in color and label, and yet have different UPCs. As I said, this one is NOT for novices :) Make sure you are checking every single bottle’s UPC against the sheet AND the price scanner to make sure they are not on clearance, nor not on the sheet. NOTE: The UPCs that start with a 7 are NOW reporting to be working – a change from last week!)
The All deal is the number one issue I’m receiving email about right now – if you are NOT up to checking and doublechecking this deal meticulously before you ring it, SKIP it. It’s a head-scratcher :)
Ready? Here we go.
Buy 6 bottles of All at $3.50 each = $21.00
Use as many $1 coupons as you have – 6/28 RP, 8/2 RP, $1 printables from All’s site linked above.
If you get one paper, with these 4 coupons, pay $17 and get $15 back. $2 for 5 bottles of All!
If you get multiple papers, with 6 $1 coupons, pay $15 and get $15 back. FREE All!
Again, BE CAREFUL on the UPCs and the prices. One of my readers pointed out that the clearance varieties ringing at $3.29 (“Sunshine Energy” is one of them) would still be useful as a filler to get to $30 if you are mixing and matching many items and find yourself at that annoying $27 mark :) Use a $1 coupon, pay $2.29 for it, and still qualify for the Cat.
As if that weren’t enough, we also have a great Catalina/Rebate promo going on Kraft products at Jewel too! Many of you know I’m not a big rebater, but if they’re high-value (over $10) I’m in… and this one is.
This is a “Buy $25, get $20 + $5!” If you buy $25 worth of Kraft products (list here – MUST spend $25 ON PREFERRED PRICES, the prices we actually pay, to qualify for this rebate) you will get two Catalinas at the register – one for $5 off your next shopping trip, and one mail-in rebate for $20!
So, let’s do the math. With NO coupons at all, this is $25 worth of free food for the cost of a stamp! With coupons, we are enjoying quite a sweet moneymaker deal… and here are your matchups:

If anyone cares, (!) Jewel is running yet another Cat promo too:
Procter & Gamble: Buy $20, get $5
Not much is jumping out at me as super-wonderful with this deal. Some of the paper products aren’t too bad if you need any of these things, but we’ve certainly seen better ($20/$10 and $30/$15 for P&G) so it’s up to you. Again, with this deal, you can work it on the regular prices too. Use www.coupontom.com for your matchups, and please feel free to post anything great that you work out with this one.
Heading to Dominick’s, there are again some Super Coupons in this week’s ad. You can stack manufacturer coupons with all of these, if there are any items that you’d like. (Normally, I would post a shopping breakdown for you, but… is anyone really headed to Doms this week with the insanity that’s STILL going on at Jewel?) If you wish to shop at Dominick’s, this will be a good week to practice your coupon matchups :) Grab a pen and your flyer, visit www.coupontom.com or www.hotcouponworld.com (has expired coupon database) and match away!
All of the Super Coupons require a total purchase of $20 or more to use, but I’m going to give you a good scenario to get over that mark and take advantage of these GOOD sales! And, keep in mind that at Dominick’s, the “Minimum $20 purchase” applies to the REGULAR, non-sale price of those items. Really! It’s even spelled out very well on Safeway’s corporate site:
What does “minimum $10 (or $20) purchase required” mean? To use store coupons that include a minimum purchase requirement, you must spend a minimum dollar amount on that shopping trip. You will reach the minimum purchase amount based upon total purchases before your Club Card discount is applied. This total will include the coupon item’s regular price, not the discounted price. For example, the regular retail price of a box of Cheerios (before coupon and before Club Card discounts) will count toward the minimum purchase required in order to use the Cheerios coupon.
So, knowing this, getting over that $20 mark isn’t as hard as it seems. Feel free to post your Doms trip reports if you come up with a good one… I have just spent hours writing the Jewel deals alone this week and focused more of my attention over there, all things considered :)
Over at Meijer, it’s kind of a light week for deals too (Jewel is knocking everyone else out of the ballpark this week once again!) … but here are a couple decent ones.
Barilla pasta is .89 a box. Meijer Mealbox has a $1 off 4 coupon. Buy 4 boxes and pay $2.56, or just .64 a box…
Crayola 24-ct crayons are .19 a box. Cheap school supplies!
Note that Meijers in other states are on different schedules. The Illinois Meijers are about a week behind on the sales vs. Indiana/Michigan. If you’re in Illinois, these Meijer deals run through Wednesday. If you’re reading from another state, they ENDED Saturday at your store… Confusing? Yes. This is why I don’t blog too many Meijer deals…
For my Rockford-area readers, are you sure you guys don’t want to road-trip to Jewel this week? :) My local Jewel (Huntley) has seen many people who’ve told the staff they’ve driven from Rockford to do the $30/$15! It truly is a GREAT sale.
That said, Hilander’s got some good stuff this week too…
Buy 4, Save $4 P&G promo: Buy any 4 Procter & Gamble products in the ad, and save $4 instantly. Of course, with coupons… some of these things become FREE!
Here’s a scenario:
Buy 2 Aussie Hair Care products ($2.99 each)
Buy 3-pack of Gillette custom razors ($3.99)
Buy 1 Clairol Herbal Essences hair care product and one Herbal Essences styler product ($2.99 each.)
Okay, we’re at 5 items, not 4… but you’ll see why in a moment.
Our total so far is $15.95. We’ve bought 4, so $4 in instant-savings comes off… putting us at $11.95.
Now, here come the coupons:
Aussie Hair Care: $2 off 2 – 7/26 RP AND $2-off-1 from www.PGEsaver.com (load to your Hilander card)
Gillette razors: $2 off – 7/2 PG AND $1 from PGEsaver
Herbal Essences: Buy shampoo, get styler free: 7/26 RP AND $1 from PGEsaver
Total manufacturer coupon value: $6.99
Total electronic coupon value: $4
Total after all coupons: $0.05 in OVERAGE. All of this is free… and you’ll need to throw something small on to eat up that overage. WOW!
NEW ELECTRONIC COUPONS too! SoftCoin.com recently added support for Kroger stores (including Hilander) for their new electronic coupons for Unilever products! Click here to check them out… they load to your card the same way that Cellfire/PGE/ShortCuts do, meaning we now have FOUR sets of electronics we can stack with at Kroger stores. WOW!
Drugstore Deals
This week at Walgreens, we have free pens again! Bic pens are on sale 2 packs for $1 again. Use the $1 off 2 coupon from 8/9 SS, or print two of these $1 off 2 coupons and take home 4 packages of pens for FREE! One more thing to cross off the school supply list…
Ecotrin asprin is FREE again (for everyone who missed it the first time!) Use this $2.25 coupon on your Ecotrin… which is $1.99. Get it FREE with possible overage! Note that you MUST buy something else with this if you intend to try for overage. Also note the store is within their rights to adjust down the coupon’s value if they choose to.
Remember that Listerine/Reach deal that keeps coming around every couple of months? It’s here AGAIN! Buy one 500ml Listerine, one Reach toothbrush, and one Reach floss. All are priced at $3 each. But, when you buy 3, you’ll get $6 back in Register Rewards, knocking the price of each to just a DOLLAR. Use the “$3 off 3 Listerine/Reach products” coupon from 8/2 SS – pay $6, get $6, and ALL will be free…
Colgate Total enamel toothpaste is a moneymaker this week too! It’s $2.99 with a $2.99 RR – you can pay $2.99 and get your money right back in that RR, making the toothpaste FREE! Or, make it a moneymaker with the .75 coupon from 7/26 SS, pay $2.24 and get $2.99 back!
And finally, at CVS, as always, they’ve got some good ECB deals. Revlon Colorstay Mineral Mousse makeup is $9.99 with a $9.99 ECB through TODAY, Tuesday, only. Even without coupons, hey… it’s free! But with a $1 coupon from 7/19 SS, it’s a moneymaker…
Bic Soleil razor cartridges are cheap too (a rarity, as we hardly ever see the refills going cheap – almost always easier to just get a free razor!) They’re on sale for $6.99 for the 4-ct. When you buy it, you’ll get a $3 ECB. Use the $3 coupon from 8/9 SS, pay $3.99 and get $3 back in ECBs, making your refills just .99.

Jill – love the new set up with the stores logo’s. Makes it much easier to find the store you’re looking for!

does anyone know if there are any stores in the area that will accept a competitor’s store coupon?
Paintedlady says
on the Listerine/Reach toothbrushes and floss is actually
“Buy 3, save $5” which makes it a $2 money maker. I saw that Coupon Mom had it listed “Buy 3, save $3” but I think that must’ve been a typo. I used this coupon several times the other day and it worked beautifully. hth!

Jill:
In the Solheim Cup booklet, there was also a $1 off coupon on any one Ritz (14 oz. or larger), Triscuit (7 oz. or larger), or Wheat Thins (7 oz. or larger). There was also a $1 off coupon for Crystal Light.

And all prices for that matter! I have enough Cheerios from the last sale and wanted to stock up on Cookie Crisp. These babies scan at $4.55 Sale price at my jewel. All I need to grab was 7 to be over $30. So it came to $14-(6)$.50 coupons=$11–with a nice $4 overage.
My Jewel is nice and stocked so I really should go back to get some more for the pantry and use two $1/3 coupons. It still puts me at a $3 overage.
Double check your store! It might me nice to have another way for overage now that the Breyers coupon campaign is over.

I just printed the shredding chese coupon that Jill said was a Manufacturer’s coupon, but on the coupon it says retailer coupon. Did they recently change this?

Just one more reminder to always price scan everything! I picked up two different flavors of BC frosting yesterday that had only “one” price. Thanks for the deals Jill!

This week Staples has 70 page notebooks (wide-rule and college rule) for a penny. They limit six per transaction, but you can purchase in groups of 6 over and over….
It comes out to 6 cents – not even enough to even register tax in Crook County! Hubby had fun paying for each order with pennies. (yea, I agree, he needs to get out more)
Lizzyray says
My local Jewel in Batavia worked for the Bryers ice cream deal only. The other items only printed out Cats if you reached $30.00 from the sale prices. Another lady was at the customer service desk asking why it didn’t give the Catalinas on the regular price. She showed the manager several receipts from the Jewel in St. Charles. These all showed the deals working off the regular prices. The manager wouldn’t budge!
I didn’t buy anything there & went to the St. Charles store where it worked beautifully! The cashier & manager were super nice & were even interested in learning more.
I thought the policy would be the same at all Jewels. Does each Jewel have the authority to change the deals?
Like I wrote earlier, the Bryers ice cream did work at the Batavia store, however, another manager at the time, said it was NOT supposed too. Any thoughts on the discrepancies?

I just wanted to add that the GM coupons on coupons.com, smartsource, and betty crocker appear to have reset. So if you bought loads of cereal like I did last week, you can go get more before Thursday if you want. I’m stocked to the gills and I’ve got 48 boxes ready to go to friends in need and food pantry. I was glad to see they’d reset so I can help some more people.

On Jill’s list above she stated Nabisco 12pk. as part of the deal. I like to get those for my kids lunches, but I don’t see them on my ad that I just got today. What price are they at? I’m trying to plan my list for tomorrow and I can’t see to find them on the front page (even in the small print!)

Again, CHECK THE PRICES FIRST!!! (I had to buy a lot more of the cake mixes & frostings to get to $30). The Arlington Heights Jewel was AWESOME today … I had sailed through so many of the $15 deals that, for the first time, did not heed my own advice to scan a Hellmann’s first before going to check out. The FABULOUS checker told me I’d need 10 to get the $15 coupons … alas, he was right.
They scan at $3.25, not shelf price of $5.45. Since these were bought specifically for the Palatine Food Pantry, I had him ring 10 up for me (he actually rang 6 & totalled it out to show me the $15 wouldn’t print, it didn’t, then he cancelled the order). I ended up paying ~$8 oop, more than I had anticipated, but I did the Hellmann’s with the intention of donating it all, so I can spare the $8 on this run with all the other free stuff I’ve gotten from this deal.

Meijer now takes competitor coupons. store Qs or manufacturer Qs with other store names. although they will not take Qs for things like $5 off $25 or more purchas.

Has anyone used the $1 coupon from the 6/21 SS for buying their Starbucks for the Kraft deal? The coupon says $1 off bottled Frappuccino coffee drink or Starbucks Doubleshot expresso drink. From what I can see it is not going to work for the 12 oz. but maybe I am wrong.

I had two different Walgreens stores refuse to honor the $2.25 coupon for the $1.99 package of Ecotrin that was on sale. I was told that they couldn’t honor it beause it was for an amount greater than the price of the item. Both times I had other items. I have had this happen before with them. It is very frustrating!
