“Deals of the Week” is written assuming you are using the inserts from the Chicago Tribune (or, if reading from outside Chicagoland, the largest newspaper serving your market area. That largest paper has the most, highest-value coupons. The content, coupons, and dollar amounts of the coupons in the RedPlum and SmartSource inserts differs by paper, so to coupon effectively, you do need to be getting the paper with the “best,” highest-value coupons.)

Each week I’ll blog the best deals on school supplies too. Note that as we get closer to school starting, we’re likely to see even cheaper deals on some of these — in past years, many stores have had 1-cent and 5-cent sales. And, keep in mind that the WORST thing to do is buy your entire child’s list at one store. Going in for 1-cent pencils and paying full price for everything else makes no sense. Keep the list with you and as you’re around town each week, buy only what is cheap. By the time school starts, you’ll have the list nearly completed… on the cheap! More tips here.

Jewel-Osco information:

Jewel produce deals:
- Green cabbage is .49/lb.

- Eggplant is $1.49/lb.
- Dinosaur egg pluots are $1.49/lb.
- Yellow flesh peaches or nectarines are $1.49/lb.

- Vine ripe tomatoes are $1.99/lb.
- Northwest cherries are $2.99/lb.
(Anytime meat is under $2 a pound (no matter what it is — beef, pork, poultry) it’s a buy in my book, because $2 is a cycle low and a good benchmark for meat prices. This is also true for most produce. Seafood, by its nature, is more expensive per pound, but a good “buy” benchmark is $4 per pound or less.)
Let’s go to Dominick’s… View weekly ad | a href=”https://www.dominicks.com”>Load Dominick’s Just For U ecoupons
Note to Safeway shoppers reading from outside Chicagoland: In Chicago, Dominick’s does not double coupons (as other Safeway stores do) – if your store doubles, you’ll do even better with many of these deals. Also, in Chicago, support for previously-available ecoupons (Cellfire, ShortCuts and PGEsaver) have been discontinued. Ecoupons are now available in the “Just For U / Coupon Center” section of electronic coupons available at Dominicks.com.
Dominick’s is also offering Deal Match, where you can load price-matching offers from Jewel and Target to your Fresh Values Card. Try it at www.Dominicks.com.
Dominick’s Super Coupons:
These are store coupons found in the weekly Dominick’s flyer, which (in the case of the name-brand products) means they can be stacked with manufacturer coupons for even bigger savings. You can also load some of these Super Coupons to your Fresh Values card via Dominicks.com and not have to clip them. Best bets this week?
In the Aug. 11-Aug. 17 flyer – “Try Deal Match” on cover:
- There’s a $5 off $15 frozen food coupon on the back page of the weekly ad. It excludes frozen meat seafood, deli or bakery items.
- Pillsbury Cookie Dough or Sweet Moments are $1.99 each, limit 4, with Super Coupon. Use a $1 coupon for the Sweet Moments (printable, printable, printable) and pay .99! Or, buy the cookie dough and use a .50 coupon (printable, printable, printable) – you’ll pay $1.49.
- Selected General Mills cereals are $1.99 each, limit 4, with Super Coupon. This overlaps with the “Buy 4, Save $4” instant-savings sale going on this week at Dominick’s. Use coupons to drop this even more…
– $1 off 2 – 7/10 SS, printable
– $1 off 3 – 8/7 GM, printable, printable.
After a $1-off-2 coupon, you’re taking home .49 cereal! I’ll have some more deal ideas below for this one too.
In the Aug. 14- Aug-17 flyer – “4 Day Sale” on cover:
- Skippy Peanut Butter (15-16.3oz.) is $1.69, limit 4, with Super Coupon. Buy two and stack this with the $1-off-2 coupon from 7/31 RP1. You’ll pay $2.38 for two, or $1.19 each!
- Sunshine Cheez-It crackers (10.5-14oz.) are $1.99, limit 4, with Super Coupon. Buy two and stack that coupon with this $1-off-2 printable. You’ll pay $2.98 for two, or $1.49 each!
- Cascade dishwasher detergent (45-75oz., 16-20ct. action pacs) are on sale for $4.49, limit 2, with Super Coupon. Use the $1 coupon from 7/31 PG and pay $3.49!
Coupon books to look for at Dominick’s: “Make a Muscle, Make a Difference” ($39 worth of coupons)
MONDAY ONLY: Lucerne 18ct. eggs are on sale for $2.
Let’s dig in even more to the “Buy 4, Save $4” instant-savings sale. This week’s ad shows a variety of General Mills cereals, Fiber One bars, and Betty Crocker fruit snacks on sale.
Get ready for a cereal stockup, because it’s going to be cheap! The weekly ad has a store coupon that knocks the price of Kix, Lucky Charms, or Cookie Crisp to $1.99 a box. If you sign onto www.Dominicks.com and click “Deal Match,” you’ll see Cocoa Puffs, Lucky Charms and Cheerios also priced at $1.99 per box. Add this Deal Match to your Fresh Values card via the site.
Now, buy 4 of any of those. The instant-savings sale will take $4 off for every four, dropping these cereals to a cool .99 per box… and that’s -before- coupons…
Here are your coupons:
– Cheerios (8.9oz.)
– $1 off 2 – 7/10 SS, printable
– $1 off 3 – 8/7 GM, printable, printable
– Cocoa Puffs (11.8oz.)
– .75 off – 7/17 SS, printable
– Lucky Charms (11.5oz.)
– $1 off 2 – 7/10 SS, printable
– $1 off 3 – 8/7 GM, printable, printable
With two $1-off-2 coupons, you’ll pay $1.96 for four boxes of cereal, or .49 each!
EDIT: A reader has noted Lucky Charms is NOT triggering the “Buy 4 Save $4” savings.
Reader Megan writes that Chex cereals are $1.49 after instant-savings, and the gluten-free varieties are included too! With this .75 printable, you’ll pay .74 per box! Very good price for gluten-free cereal (and for cereal in general, lately…)
Here’s a deal on Gain dish detergent and laundry detergent! This is a fun double-dip deal. Dominick’s has an instant-savings deal running on Gain products — buy three and receive $3 in instant-savings. This also overlaps with a national Catalina deal on Gain too. When you buy 3 Gain products, one of which is laundry detergent, you’ll get a $3 Catalina too!
Here are your products and matchups. Prices were gathered by readers at the Crystal Lake and Oswego Dominick’s:
Gain 28oz. (large-size) dishwashing liquid – $1.99 (.99 after instant)
– .50 off – 8/14 RP
Gain 40-load powdered laundry detergent – $6.99 ($5.99 after instant)
– $2 off – 7/17 SS
Gain 32-load liquid laundry detergent – $5.99 ($4.99 after instant)
– $1 off – 8/14 RP
Gain 60-load liquid fabric softener – $3.99 ($2.99 after instant)
– .50 off – 7/10 RP
Ready for a scenario?
Buy 2 large Gain dish detergents ($1.99 each) plus 1 powder Gain ($6.99)
Total: $10.97
Minus $3 instant savings (now $7.97)
Minus two .50 Gain dish liquid coupons (8/14 RP) and one $2 Gain powdered detergent coupon (7/17 SS) – (now $4.97)
Pay $4.97 and get a $3 Catalina… $1.97 for all!
That’s a GREAT price for the Gain laundry detergent, plus “free” dish soap. The powdered Gain has more loads and is a better buy quantity-wise, but if you prefer liquid, you can do the same deal with the $5.99 liquid Gain laundry detergent and the $1 coupon outlined above.
Special thanks to readers Tnovak, Cathy705, Dancingwolves, and Momof4 for putting this deal together on the fly (and if you’ve ever wondered how some of these deals get put together, this one came together on a Saturday night in the Forum…)
Here’s a Dominick’s Just For U deal on Ragu pasta sauce. If you log into Just For U at www.dominicks.com, you’ll see an offer for Ragu at .99 a jar, limit 4. Add this to your Fresh Values card, and then use the $1-off-2 coupon from 7/31 RP. Buy two and pay .98 for two, or .49 each!
Palermo’s Primo Thin Crust Pizzas (14.55-19.1oz.) are on sale for $3.99 each. Buy two and use this $1-off-2 printable. You’ll pay $6.98 for two, or $3.49 each – not a bad price for these.
If you haven’t yet signed up for the “Just For U“ electronic discounts that you can load to your Dominick’s Fresh Values card, you may want to. For registering your card, you’ll receive an ecoupon for a FREE 12-ct. Lucerne large eggs! You’ll also activate a set of electronic discounts that are tied to your card for the next 90 days. Once you register with Meijer Mperks, you log into the Mperks website and click the electronic coupons you’d like to load to your account. Then, when you’re at the checkout, type your cellphone number into the keypad at the register, and your coupons come off automatically.

AND, if you shop at the Illinois NILES or ORLAND Meijer locations, they typically haven’t been following the same sale flyer as the other Illinois Meijers.

Wrapping things up with Walmart…
Coupon books to look for at Walmart: “Bright Ideas, Delicious Cereals“ (Kellogg’s cereal and breakfast coupons)
Gain dish detergent is .97 every day at Walmart. Use the .50 coupon from 8/14 RP and pay .47!
Policies to know:
- Walmart will price match any competitor’s advertised price. Bring the other store’s flyers with you to the store.
- With the new coupon policy, Walmart will also accept other store’s STORE coupons with an actual price listed on them. For example, a Dominick’s store coupon advertising “.99 Ragu Pasta Sauce” would be accepted. A Walgreens store coupon advertising “2/$1 Morton’s Salt” would be accepted. (A Target store coupon for “$2.50 off Huggies” would not, because it does not show the actual selling price of the item.)
- With the new coupon policy, Walmart will also accept competitor’s Catalina manufacturer coupons. You can get a Catalina for $1 off Snuggle and use it at Walmart.
- Walmart’s new coupon policy specifically addresses coupon overage. It says “Coupons may exceed the price of the item. Change may be given or applied toward the cost of the basket purchase.”
I would print a copy and carry a copy of the coupon policy with you if you anticipate any issues.
Will I blog Walmart in its entirety each week?
I will not be blogging entire writeups for Walmart each week. Every store location’s regular prices are different, and Walmart does not issue a weekly ad every week. I’ve listed Walmart at the end of each week’s Deals writeup, because if you see any deals above that you want, you’ll likely also be able to do them at Walmart.
However, if there IS an ad with noteworthy sales or I’m aware of great coupon matchups, you’ll find those here too.

As always, these deals are guidelines for shopping. I can make no guarantee that these items will be on sale, in stock, or available at your area store. I can also not guarantee your Catalinas will print, your cashier will smile at you while you check out, or that your shopping cart won’t have a broken wheel. But I CAN teach you how to save money :)
And, also, as always, a huge thanks to the many readers who posted and emailed deals that made it into today’s Deals of the Week! We’re all in this together, and I sincerely appreciate everyone who spots and passes along good deals that we can all enjoy :) Thank you… to YOU!
* All You magazine: If you like coupons, you will probably really enjoy it. It’s an inexpensive magazine ($2.49 an issue) that is absolutely filled with coupons each month — typically $50-$100 worth per issue! Subscribing via the pink banner on the right drops the price to $1.67 per issue. Depending on the values, if you use 2 or 3 coupons alone from each issue, you’ve recouped the cost of the magazine, and you’re on your way to even bigger savings.)

Has anyone tried for the Gain catalina at Dominick’s? A bunch of other websites are saying the catalina runs 8/19-27…I have such a love/hate relationship with the catalinas–great deals come with lots of unpredictability :)
kdevriesteacher says
wow! First, thanks for posting so early. 2nd: unfortunately, the CVS Huggies deal does not quite work out the way it is posted. You are only able to use one store coupon per visit.(So, it may still be possible to get the deal if you make several visits) Also, on the store coupon, it says that it cannot be combined with another coupon. However, I went to CVS today and was able to use one store coupon, and 3 $3 coupons with the deal that you posted. Still a good deal.

FYI, was at Meijer last week, asked if they had single rolls of Paper towels for the deal. The gentleman that helped me asked if I was a super couponer. Then, he mentioned that his wife was too. He also said that Jill coupons here and is always bubbly.
Well, giddy is how couponing makes me. I did a great deal on Saturday. I bought the green saucer chair ($29.99)for my daughter’s room on sale for $19.99. Used Saturday store q for $3.00 off a purchase of $15 or more. Then used my $5 man q coupon from the sock/cereal deal. Got the chair for little over $10! Not bad if she changes her taste in a couple of years.
Thanks Jill for all the hard work!

I did the Air Wick deal at CVS yesterday. The Ultra Odor Detect Kits (the big ones) are on sale for $6.99. There’s a $4.00 off coupon in the 7/10 SS. It’s also part of the spend $30, get $10 gas card. I bought 4 kits (27.96) and 3 glade sprays (3.00) for a total of 30.96. I used 4 $4 coupons for an oop of 14.96. Then I got the Q for the $10 gas card. My original intention was to buy Huggies slip on diapers, but my store didn’t have them. So I went with my back-up plan. I LOVE the lavender and chamomile Air Wick sprays so I wasn’t disappointed.

Are the Cocoa Puffs BROWNIE CRUNCH $1.99 when price matched at Dominick’s or are only the regular variety included? The .75 off – 7/17 SS coupon is only for Cocoa Puffs Brownie Crunch. Anyone try this yet? Thanks!

Lucky Charms is not part of the $4 off of 4 boxes at Dom’s, only Cheerios and Cocoa Puffs if you are doing the price matching. I learned that the hard way.

Target would not let me use the $5 gift card and 2 other target coupons for the toilet paper. They said only one target coupon/item:( I used the $5 gift card and 2 manufacturers though. Needed toilet paper.
sahettinger says
Wow!! Even with many of the coupons already being gone (reached print limits) and me having previously used some of my clipped paper coupons for the products, I will still able to get an INCREDIBLE deal at Dominick’s today saving nearly 79%!!!
My total out of pocket (with tax) was $14.66 — and I got 4 boxes of Cheerios, 4 boxes Betty Crocker fruit snacks, 4 boxes Lucky Charms/Golden Graham cereal bars, 2 boxes Cheez-Its, 2 cans Friskies cat food, 2 jars Ragu sauce, 1 box Teddy Grahams and 1 package of 200ct napkins.
And may I just add that a deal like this couldn’t have come at a better time. I was laid off (permanately, as the company went out of business) and today was the first day I didn’t a job to show up to this morning (I also put my kids on the bus for their 1st day of school)…. depressed didn’t even come close to stating how I was feeling early today.
So — Thank You!!!

My store had this deal last week (in central IL we are a week ahead of northern IL). I happened to have 3 of the $1/2 hot dogs coupons so I used 6 hotdogs in 1 of my sets of 8. I was happy with $0.50 hotdogs. When I checked out, a catalina for $4 off my next purchase printed for the hot dogs. It was one where it was $4 when you bought 5 or more, $3 when you bought 4 or more, etc. So they ended up paying me to buy those hotdogs! Not sure if it’s still an active Catalina but thought I’d let people know.
I also bought 24 boxes of Capri sun and 16 lunchables. The lunchables are the ones that have the juice boxes and candy in them. Easy to add a fruit for the kids’ lunches. And with 4 kids I couldn’t pass up the $0.77 Capri Sun! And Meijer does accept RRs from Walgreens too.

Just about every Lysol product is 50% off this week at Mejier. The prices are great even without coupons ($1.23 for sprays and $1.19 for toilet bowl cleaner); but, throw a few the coupons on top from the 8/7 SS and you’ll get an even better deal!!! We paid under a dollar for each bottle and there’s no limit! This is the best deal we’ve gotten on these products without having to deal with RR or ECBs.

I have a MacBook and can’t print coupons from any of the popular online websites. I have installed their software but then I get the spinning death wheel & the coupons don’t pop up.
Is there a coupon site which allows the coupon to be emailed & the coupon is in the body of the email (not a link back to the website)?
Any help would be appreciated as I am trying to maximize the coupons available other than the ones in my paper!

Had Hubby on his way home stop off at CVS for a gallon of milk ( Its on sale for $3.19 and you earn $1 in ECB). Reminded him to scan the card at the machine in front of the store b/c in the ad it was advertised you get coupons for free products. He earned the free CVS bandage and carmello candy bar. They didn’t have the flexible bandages in stock or candy so they substituted. He came home and showed me his receipt:
1 Dean Foods whole milk: $3.19
1 snickers almond: $.50
1 Cvs plastic bandages 120C: $2.49
Less
1 CVS MFR Coupon -$1.19 (assuming this is for the candy bar?)
1 CVS coupon: -$4.29 (assuming this is for the bandages?)
subtotal: $.70
tax:.06
total: $.76 and he earned a $1 ECB for the milk
not sure if everyone will get the overage but make sure you have something else in your order to absorb it in case you do get the overage.

Jewell in Dekalb has Ball Park Frank Lite packages for $3.99 with a $2 off store coupon on them. At the register it automaticaly takes .50 cents off with your Jewell card. I used my .75 off coupon stacked with the $2 coupon and saved $3.25 all together! I paid .74 for $4 hotdogs! I have to admit, savings like this (on things I actually need) make it addicting.

I haven’t had mine stolen but I’ve noticed that my insers have been very inconsistent lately. One week I only had 3 pages out of an Ss and this week I was missing a whole insert (not the first time it’s happened either.) Is there anything we can do about this??

Yesterday I “got in” on the Lysol deal thanks to jlennon’s appropriate post on this forum. I love it when people show us deals that they found this week. (Just wish everyone understood that contacting the Tribune directly would be an appropriate way to address missed inserts, NOT here…) Thank you Jill for providing such a great service to your readers, you rock!

Early this week I realized I was running out of diapers, so, it was really nice to see that CVS had a deal going on. I was a little sad when I could not find the $2 off Huggies coupon from the CVS website, but I almost fainted when I got a $3 off Huggies and a $1 off any jumbo pack off diapers this afternoon out of the CVS coupon machine.
So, here is what I bought:
(1) box of Kleenex = $1.50
(3) packs of Huggies Slip On = $8.99 each
(1) box of Huggies wipes = $2.79
(1) Hershey bar = $1.19
(2) M&M = 2/ $1
(2) Gal of milk = $3.19 each
(1) box of CVS brand band aid = $3.99
Total Pre-coupon and pre-tax = $43.82
Coupons used:
(3) $3.00 Huggies
(1) $3.00 off Huggies from CVS coupon machine
(1) $1.00 off on any jumbo pack of diapers from the CVS coupon machine
(1) $0.50 off Huggies wipes
(1) $1.19 off Hershey bar (Free Hershey from CVS coupon machine)
(1) $0.75 off M&M
(1) $3.99 off CVS band aid brand from CVS coupon machine
Deducted: $19.43
Total: $24.39
I received $10 for Gas and $2 ECB for milk, so I got everything for $12.39!!!
If I could have add another $6.18 to my purchase, I could have used the $10 off $50 to my deal and make it a little better, but I had the diapers and I could not think of anything else I could have bought. Especially if I had coupons for those items, but, oh well, I can’t complain. Each diaper pack came to be at around $2.58 including the “free” wipes and the “free” Kleenex. But I guess, I spent almost the same as buying one pack of huggies (I think they go for around $12.99 when not on sale)

Walgreens
Buy the Revlon nail polish using the 2 coupons and then you get $3.00 in RR.
Use the 3 dollar off Huggies coupon with the 3 dollar RR. You pay around 4 dollars? Get 2 dollars back! (sorry, i dont know the exact amounts off the top of my head… but it turned out great for me!!!

I shopped at the Tinley Park Jewel, mainly to get the Butterball lunchmeats deal, but they were $3.69, not $1.99. Do different Jewels have different pricings? I didn’t see the BB lunchmneats in the ad, I relied on what I read here. Big bummer as school is starting this week and 3 kids go thru a lot of lunchmeat!!

In the continuing deals under hilander/kroger listed crest toothpaste and 3-bar ivory soap for $1 (free after doubling of a coupon) and go gurt 8-count for 1.88. I couldn’t find any of these items on sale. Am I missing something??
