Brr! This week we’ve got cold weather… but hot deals!
Starting at Jewel, did you see their great Save $5 ad in Sunday’s paper? This is another one of those fantastic Catalina deals that will give you $5 off your next order when you buy $20 of Proctor & Gamble products. The bonus? With this deal, you’ll also get 5 free Redbox video rentals at checkout… and free movies are a great way to spend a winter night at home!
Now, if you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you know the wording to look for on these Jewel ads… this week’s ad states “Save $5 on your next shopping trip when you buy $20 or more.” It does not state that you need to use your Preferred card to receive the discount. What this means is that the deal works on regular prices for the Jewel items. So, in the instance of the Bounty paper towels, the 8-roll pack is on sale for $10.99, but the regular price? $14.99. Which number are you adding up to get to $20? The regular price. But which number will you pay? The SALE price. You will still use your Preferred card to receive the discount, but as you’re counting up to $20, you’ll be counting the regular prices. (The Osco items do operate on the sale prices.)
An easy way to know you’ve gotten over the $20 mark? Scan your purchases at the self-checker before you scan your Preferred card. When your before-tax total goes over $20, you’re good to go!
So, here are your matchups for the P&G deal. Unless otherwise noted, all come from the 11/30 PG:
$1 off Tide
.25 off Charmin
.25 off Folgers
$1.50 off Dayquil or Nyquil
.55 off Vicks
Buy 2 Vicks, get free Puffs – (remember, the “free” Puffs will still count $1.65 toward your total purchase — and you can use the 55-cent off Vicks coupons with this too…)
Buy any Cover Girl foundation, get face product free
.55 off Pepto Bismol
$1 off Crest
.75 off Crest Pro Health Rinse
$5 off Crest Whitestrips
$2 off Gillette Body Wash
$2 off 2 Aussie Hair Care
$1 off Herbal Essences
$1 off Prilosec
Free Fusion Hydra shaving gell when you buy a Gillette Fusion Razor (watch Avenu, as many people have had this deal listed on it – why not get a free gel if you’re buying the razor?)
$1 off Pampers diapers (watch Avenu, as many people have had this too, typically $2 or $3) – also, blog reader jenfrey98 says to look for blinkie dispensers for Pampers coupons in the store too!
$1 off Duracell
.75 off Duracell
.75 off Duracell – 11/16 RP
Bounty (no current coupons, but it’s been appearing on Avenu, typically $1)
Max Factor cosmetics (check Avenu – many people have it $1.50 off.)
So… here’s an example of a way to work this deal:
Iams 17-lb. bag of dog food: It’s on sale for $16.99, but the non-sale price is $19.99 — just a penny shy of the $20 mark required to trigger the $5 Catalina and 5 movie rentals. Adding anything else included in the deal will do the trick. A good filler? Crest toothpaste. It’s on sale for $1.50 a tube, but with the $1 coupon listed above, the toothpaste will be just 50 cents a tube. Now you’re paying $17.49 for the dog food and the toothpaste, and you’ll get $5 back — for a total of $12.49! That’s a very good price for this big bag of Iams.
Now, a few months back I posted a link to Iams’ site in which they were running a promo for a free bag of dog food. With that promo, in the same mailer with the coupon for the free bag, there was also a coupon for $5 off Iams. If you’ve got it, work that coupon into this deal and you’ll pay just $7.49 for everything! Any time you have your own coupons (from wherever!) that you can work into these deals, absolutely do so!
(Note that the Crest makes a great “filler” item to use with this deal in any combination if you’re close to $20 and need something small to carry your total over that mark, as it will only cost 50 cents after the coupon.)
You can mix and match any items you want in this deal — get to $20, and you’ll get the $5 Catalina back. Remember, you will only get one $5 Catalina per transaction, so if you want to buy more than $20 worth, split your purchases up into separate transactions of $20 each. And, remember to use the $5 Catalina from your first transaction to help pay for the next!
Also remember to check your Avenu for additional discounts on these items, especially the baby products, which I’ll touch on next…
Many people have written to me asking for good deals on baby products. With 3 children (one still in diapers!) I know how expensive baby food, diapers, and related products can be when they’re not on sale.
But there are often great deals on baby stuff, and this week is no exception… first, how about some FREE Wild Harvest organic baby food? Stage 1 jars are 59 cents, and Stage 2 jars are on sale 3 for $2.00 through Dec. 6. Print some $1 off Wild Harvest coupons from their site and get this baby food for FREE! And, at most stores, you’ll also get overage with this coupon, which means the store is essentially paying you to take home free food! (Remember, overage is a privilege, not a right — but it certainly is one of the greatest bonuses of coupon shopping!)
If you have Pampers on your Avenu this week, it will also work well into the P&G deal posted above. I’ve got $3.00 off Pampers this week, and if I pair that with the $1 coupon above, that’s $4 off the $10.69 diapers — and you’ll be halfway to the $20 needed to receive an additional $5 back too! If you have Pampers on your Avenu too, and you have more Pampers coupons (there are lots out right now — $1.50 in Pampers mailers, $1.50 on Cheerios boxes) — buy 2 packs of diapers ($21.38.) Get $6 off for Avenu ($15.38) – get $3 off with 2 $1.50 coupons ($12.38.) Pay $12.38, and get the $5 Catalina … making your 2 packs of diapers just $7.38, or $3.69 each. That’s a GREAT price for Pampers! :) A bonus? Many people are reporting that the register is also printing a $1.50 or $2.00 Pampers coupon too, which you can of course take, turn around… and buy MORE Pampers with!
In addition to the Wild Harvest baby food noted above, there are some great deals going on Wild Harvest organic foods this week at Jewel too. For each of these, you’ll need some $1 off Wild Harvest coupons… and remember, for the items on sale Buy 1, Get 1 Free, you can also use a coupon on the free item — making many of these items fantastically cheap!
Wild Harvest organic milk – $3.69 at most stores, so $2.69 w/coupon
Wild Harvest whole wheat pasta – $2.49 B1G1F – 49 cents for 2 boxes w/2 coupons (through Dec 7)
Wild Harvest organic pasta sauce – $3.99 B1G1F – $1.99 for 2 jars w/2 coupons (through Dec 7)
Wild Harvest tortilla chips – $2.89 B1G1F – $0.89 for 2 bags w/2 coupons (through Jan. 11)
Wild Harvest soymilk or ricemilk – $2.59 B1G1F – $0.59 for 2 cartons w/2 coupons (through Jan. 11)
Wild Harvest canned vegetables (not all Jewel locations carry them, but many do!) $1, so FREE after coupon
Wild Harvest canned tomato sauce – $1.29, so .29 after coupon
Still at Jewel, Fresh Express bagged salads are on sale for $1. The 11/9 SS inserts have a 75-cent off coupon, so you’ll be getting your bagged salad for just a quarter!
Suave Naturals shampoo or conditioner is on sale for 88 cents a bottle. Pair this sale with the $1.50 off 2 from 9/21 RP, and you’ll be getting 2 bottles of Suave for .26, or .13 each! If you have the 11/16 RP, there’s a $1 off 2 coupon in that one, and with this coupon, you’ll pay .76 for 2 bottles, or .38 each.
Switching over to Kmart… Kmart’s having their fabulous Super Double Coupon sale again through Dec. 6th! What’s so great about these sales? Kmart doubles all coupons up to and including $2… and when $2 becomes $4, you can get lots of things free or cheap!

10/12 RP – $2 off, doubled to $4 = FREE
The coupon website A Full Cup has an even more extensive matchup list for the Kmart doubles, so be sure to check it out if you plan to shop this week.
Remember, Kmart does not accept internet coupons, nor do they give coupon overage due to doubling. But these double coupon sales are lots of fun, and they’re great opportunities to get free stuff too!
Over at Walgreens, how about a toothpaste moneymaker? Colgate Total or MaxFresh toothpaste is on sale for $2.99. When you buy a tube, you’ll get a $2 Register Reward, making your toothpaste just 99 cents. Now, 99 cents is good… but let’s make it FREE! The 11/16 inserts have a $1 off Colgate. Use this coupon, pay $1.99, and get $2 in Register Rewards! Or, make it even better… print a $1.50 off Colgate coupon, pay $1.49, and get $2 back in Register Rewards, making this a moneymaker!
Still at Walgreens, they’ve got All 2X laundry detergent on sale. Use the coupon in the weekly Walgreens flyer to get it for just $1.79/bottle. Then, print two $1 coupons, stack these with the Walgreens flier coupon, and get your All for just 79 cents a bottle! If you missed last month’s great sale on All at Jewel, here’s a chance to score some more cheap laundry detergent!
Lastly, I’ll throw this one out there just in case anyone else got it too — this week I got a coupon mailer from Glade with all kinds of coupons for Glade products inside. (I have no idea how or why I got this.) But inside is a coupon for $4 off Glade Wisp candles. Well… the candles are on sale at Walgreens this week for $3.99 – so they’re free if you happen to have this coupon. Check your mail! :)

Also I got that Glade coupon book to. It is white and blue and says Fill Your Home With Joyful Fragrances and has scratch and sniff stickers of all the Glade smells in it to with coupons. My kids have been playing with it and I didn’t look at it really till now. There are recipe cards in it for cookies to.

Hi, Jill:
On Wednesday last week I was able to use the Wild Harvest coupon no problem at the self-check out at Jewel. I bought several pasta’s and baby foods. On Saturday I returned to the store to buy a bunch of baby food and other items. Went to the self check-out (same Jewel but different check-out register than Wednesday) and right off the bat my coupons started beeping saying that the item was not recognized. So, isn’t that strange a few days previous the coupon was not beeping? So, does the coupon beep at certain registers or is it specific to certain Jewel’s ? I still have a bunch of coupons to use. I’ve got to think that this has happened to you before. What a great deal I got on Wednesday – thanks for the tip.

Jill, thank you so much for this blog. Add me to the list of the addicted! I was wondering if anyone else is having trouble printing the Wild Harvest coupons. I get a message that the coupon printed has to be activated (which I already did.) Then I get a screen telling me the coupons are printing which they never do. I have disabled my anti-virus, firewall and anything else I can think of, and tried to print from IE and Firefox. Thanks in advance for any hints.

Okay, so last night at about midnite (it was actually about 12:20am Dec 2nd) we went to Jewel to work on that Proctor & Gamble deal (spend $20 and get $5 + movies).
We reached the $20 ($20.47) with the Aussie and Herbal Essences hair products, which were B1G1F. We paid $3.99 for each of the two brands and of course received a free bottle of each brand.
We also bought a tub of the Folger’s Coffee for $5.99 (non-sale price $10.99).
Lastly, we bought one of the Crest toothpaste at the sale price of $1.50 and had a manufacturer’s coupon for $1.00 off. One of our mistakes here was that on our Jewel Avenu we had an additional 75cents off, but we failed to note the Jewel Avenue minimum size of 7 to 8.2 oz. sizes, and the Crest we chose was 6.4 oz. Oops!!
Anyway, as far as we can tell, we reached the $20 mark for the Proctor & Gamble deal:
$3.99 – Aussie
$3.99 – Herbal Essences
$10.99 – Folgers
$1.50 – Crest
Yet we never received the Catalina, nor anything for the movies. The Catalina machine was on, and it did have paper.
So, while we still did very well purchasing about $30 worth of products, spending only $13.90 after tax (we also bought 2 of the Fresh Express salad bags for $1.00 each) … the problem with the Catalina and the movies left a slightly sour taste in our mouths.
We will be going back to Jewel today to see about clearing up the Catalina issue, but I remember well that you (Jill) said that there are still problems with the Catalinas, so to be aware and ready for that.
Nonetheless, I am very pleased with the outcome, and am more appreciative to you than I could put into words. By the way, I was at your Elgin coupon class yesterday, and was extremely impressed.
Thank you for everything, Jill.

Hi Jill. I am another newly-addicted super couponer. This site has really helped me get some great deals over the last few weeks. Thanks for all of your work! Nothing beats that victorious feeling you get as you walk to your car after scoring at Jewell!
Anyway, another good sale that has been going on is that Walmart has Kraft Mac & Cheese for $.50 a box and Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom & Cream of Chicken soups for $.60 a can. Even if you don’t have a coupon, it’s worth the trip to stock up!

Hi Jill ,

Will I reach my $ 20.00 ? And get $ 5 Catalina and 5 free rentals??
Also Can I use a previous $ 10 catalina against the OOP.
Thanks for all your help.

I, too, received this coupon book today in the mail–and, like others, don’t know why-but I am not complaining! Is anyone else registered with RightAtHome? That was my thinking on why I got this. Off to Walgreens in the morning-hopefully they will still have the All & Wisp candles!

This topic about our Wild Harvest Adventure is a spin-off from my post about the Proctor & Gamble deal and my missing $5 Catalina and 5 free movies.
Jill, one thing I forgot to add to that Proctor & Gamble update was this:
As we lobbied our case with the Customer Service desk, the manager lady said, “oh .. is this the stuff that lady on the internet talks about?” … my husband said, “Ma’am, this situation has nothing to do with any lady on the internet”.
So anyway, we rectified our Proctor & Gamble missing Catalina situation, and decided to do some powershopping.
With a total of (51) fifty one $1 off coupons printed from the Wild Harvest website, we placed 46 boxes of Wild Harvest pasta (Rotini, Whole Wheat, regular and Penne), as well as 9 bottles of Wild Harvest Stage 2 baby food in our shopping cart.
The pasta was $2.49/each, and there is the B1G1F deal on those. We used 2 coupons for every two pasta boxes we bought, bringing our total to $.49 per 2 boxes. All that is just like Jill said already.
(We also bought Jewel brand plain yogurt, which was 5 for $3.25 and was not a Preferred Card deal, and we did not have coupons for those.)
We went to the self-checkout, and scanned 8 boxes. Then we scanned some coupons to make sure there were not going to be any problems with those. After scanning 6 coupons successfully, we figured that all the coupons would scan just fine, so we just went ahead and scanned all the pasta.
With our entire order scanned, we set off to scan the rest of the coupons (remember we already scanned 6 as “testers”).
After scanning only 5 more coupons (11 total at this point), a nice young worker came up to us and stopped us from scanning any more, and when we asked what was going on, the reply was that “the yellow light turned on” …
We had no idea what yellow light she was talking about, nor its relevance to us.
She takes our coupons, and gets a book that I presume was the book to verify that the coupons weren’t counterfeit. As she is looking at the book, that manager that we dealt with at the beginning about our missing $5 Catalina (+ 5 movies) showed up, and kind of took-over for the younger employee (who even stated herself that she was trying to “learn the ropes” about these situations.)
The coupons seemed to pass muster, but now the manager went off the the room behind the Customer Service desk. Next, the younger lady ended our transaction at the self-checkout, and brought all of our stuff over to (what my husband called) “the Self-Checkout Command Center” … which is the centrally located machine for the employees. At this point, as we walk toward “the Self-Checkout Command Center”, my husband asked the young lady “why exactly are we being forced to suffer through this?” …
Before an answer came, the manager showed up.
The manager said that we are able to use the coupons for the pasta, but that we couldn’t use the coupons for the baby food, since each individual baby jar was $.67 a piece, and each coupon was $1 off … stating that we could only use the coupons for items that individually cost $1.00.
By now, my husband is extremely annoyed, but still being entirely cordial.
My husband said, “the baby food jars are 3 for $2, and we are using 2 coupons totaling $2 off.” … he continued, “the coupon states that its one coupon per purchase, and we purchased 3, but we’re only scanning 2 coupons for the 3 baby food jars, thus we are not seeking to get an overage, nor are we violating the Wild Harvest coupon requirements. We are only using 2 coupons for every 3 baby food jars we buy.”
Eventually, the manager says she has to call-in the manager … so we’re assuming this guy must be GOD, because we thought she was the big manager of the whole place.
Once the BIG BIG manager comes up, the (lesser) manager does all she can to fill him in, but with her own little bit of spin on everything. At every moment that something was misrepresented, my husband spoke up.
In reality, for as much as the (lesser) manager had to tell the BIG BIG manager, it was clear that none of them are really sure what to do … as an example, the BIG BIG manager said, “are you telling me that they’re going to get money from us?” …
Okay, seriously, pardon me for appearing rude, but isn’t that a severely dopey question to ask? … as the BIG BIG manager no less?
Anyway, there are still other details to this sordid affair, but in the end, we were able to use all the coupons. So, you can look at it two ways:
1.) We bought $126 worth of stuff (this would be without any deals whatsoever), and spent a little over $16 …
2.) We bought $67 worth of on-sale items for a little over $16.
As a result of this, I am contacting Jewel, Supervalu and Wild Harvest, which is essentially akin to contacting 3 people from the same company but in different cubicles.
Our goal is to have the relevant information on-hand, so that the employees, managers and BIG BIG managers can be rest assured that we are not doing anything outside of what is proper, as per Jewel, Supervalu and Wild Harvest.
Personally, I think the young lady “learning the ropes” thought we were Counterfeit Coupon Bandits (so she was scared of getting in trouble), which then brought out the (lesser) manager who already had a sour taste in her mouth about us from the Catalina situation.
My overall feeling was that the (lesser) manager thought we were “scamming”, or “low-lifes”, or “screwing Jewel”, because when she later stated that she “just didn’t want to get fired”, there was nothing up to that point that indicated she was in self-preservation mode, rather, it was clear to us that she just didn’t like us, or what we were doing.
I apologize for the long message, and I most certainly do not want to discourage people, because I know that we aren’t discouraged. Not at all. If anything, I think this is a perfect example of why you need to know what you’re talking about at these stores, and you need to be able to back yourself up with “corporate” backing, hence my decision to contact Jewel, Supervalu and Wild Harvest, so we can reach a clear understanding of all relevant policies.
It seems very likely that we super-couponers will be required to educate some of these stores’ employees … which is why we all need to know exactly what we’re talking about.
As always, thanks for everything, Jill.

Jill- Please consider starting you classes with a coupon Code of Ethics and Conduct section. You are giving birth to too many new couponers a week. The rules and common sense are being genetically altered and the society is going to be doomed or severely compromised. We’ve entered “The Twilight Zone” I’m afraid.

I was at Jewel today to take advantage of the P&R sale. I picked out my misc. groceries, 1 bounty, and 1 cascade (Total non-preferred price was 20.78). I expected to earn a set of coupons and I did not. I went ahead with my second transaction which was 2 pkg of Pampers. This sale did generate my coupons. I went right to the managers desk and aked her if she knew why they did not print from my first order. She told me it didn’t matter anyway because I earned them on my second order and there is a one per day limit. Tracked by my prefered card. Is this true or did I somehow miss calculate or make some other silly mistake???
LisaM says
It may not be a calculation error on your part. You very well may be correct. The coupon printers in all 6 of the self checkout lanes at the Jewel that I use do not work. They have the little green light as if they are on, but never print. You may have to go through a regular register with a cashier to get your coupons. Either that or advise them at the service desk that your coupon(s) did not print.

Jill, I know this is a dead topic, but about that Proctor & Gamble deal from last week …
The part where you wrote:
Now, if you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you know the wording to look for on these Jewel ads… this week’s ad states “Save $5 on your next shopping trip when you buy $20 or more.” It does not state that you need to use your Preferred card to receive the discount.
… I was wondering if you could clarify something for us.
For something unrelated to this topic, I was looking back at the link you gave to a snapshot of that ad for the Proctor & Gamble stuff, and for the first time, I noticed that there is a little “with Preferred Card” icon right next to the number 5.
I swear, I never saw that before, not only when looking at that link here, but even in my own paper.
Does that mean we were all wrong about using regular prices for Jewel stuff? .. and that we actually were supposed to use the Preferred Card prices?
If you don’t recall the original topic, it is here:
