“Deals of the Week” is written assuming you are using the inserts from the Chicago Tribune (or, if reading from outside Chicagoland, the largest newspaper serving your market area. That largest paper has the most, highest-value coupons. The content, coupons, and dollar amounts of the coupons in the RedPlum and SmartSource inserts differs by paper, so to coupon effectively, it’s best to subscribe to the paper that contains the highest-value coupons.)
They are now offering discount subscription codes for MULTIPLE newspaper to the same address! (Link opens in new window.)

The Jewel-Osco “Wish Big Win Big” game is over. You have until 2/15 to redeem any coupons for prizes or products. One deal that I spotted that looked decent this week is on the Shoppers Value spice shakers. They’re on sale for $1. I have quite a few .25 coupons for these in my game tickets, and .75 isn’t terrible for spice.
SavingStar has a cool new ecoupon offer up. Spend $15.00 on selected Quaker products in February, and get $5.00 back. This deal includes
This deal runs through 2/29. Load this Quaker ecoupon offer at SavingStar. AND… it overlaps with this week’s Jewel “The More You Shop, The More You Save” Catalina offer…
“The More You Shop, The More You Save” Catalina Sale These are product-specific Catalina offers. By the item featured in the ad, get a Catalina for a certain dollar amount off your next shopping trip. While the Jewel ad is FILLED with “The More You Shop” offers this week, quite a few of these prices are just not that hot. Many of them work out to be what I’d consider a decent pre-offer price. With over 50 offers in the ad, I am only focusing on the BEST deals here. Here are your products and matchups: Betty Crocker Fruit Snacks (various, 4.5-9oz.) – $2.50 Fiber One Bars or Brownies (4.1-7oz.) – $3 General Mills Cereals (various, 8.7-14oz.) – $2.50 Nature Valley Granola Bars or Thins (6-8.9oz.) – $3 Ocean Spray Fruit Snacks (various, 4.5-9oz.) – $2.50 DEAL IDEAS: Either the GM cereals or the Ocean Spray fruit snacks are going to be your best bets here. Buy any 4 ($10) and use two $1-off-2s, four .50-off-1s, or a combination of both, depending on what you’re buying. Pay $8 and get a $2 Catalina plus a Free Milk up to $4.50 Catalina. That’s $6 for 4 boxes of cereal or 4 boxes of fruit snacks, AND milk. If you buy milk worth $4.50, such as organic, and you would have been buying the milk anyway, you’re looking at $1.50 for four boxes of cereal or snacks… or about .38 per box after the entire deal. |
There’s a “Spend $15, Get $5 Catalina” sale on Dove and Degree products. I think the prices are kind of high for this sale, and the only coupons available are $1 coupons… I’m passing.

Taste of Home FREE Cookbook, 5-cup Rice Cooker and 12-quart Tamale Steamer P&G Promotion
Jewel is running an “A Taste Of Home” mail-in promotion on P&G products. Buy $25 worth of P&G products in one transaction and receive a 2-piece cookware set and one cookbook of your choice via mail (view ad here.)
The cookware is a 12-quart tamale steamer, a 5-cup rice cooker, and one of the following cookbooks: “Fresh Mexico,” “Latin Grilling,” or “Cocina Cubana.” $25 worth of goods must be purchased in the same transaction, and you must submit a receipt from the same store you found the forms in (must be from Jewel – cannot use a Dominick’s receipt, etc.)
The offer runs through 4/30/12. Look for the forms for this rebate in Spanish/Latino Jewel locations.
The form for this offer is online too on another store’s website. Several readers called the number on the form and were told that printable versions would be accepted.
UPDATE! On 2/11, I received my A Taste of Home package. It contained the rice cooker, the “Latin Grilling” cookbook I chose, and a note stating that due to overwhelming demand, the tamale steamer will not be available until June 2012, so it will ship separately.

Kroger is surprisingly light on deals this week. They are running a “Quarter Back” Catalina promotion in which you get $1 back for every 4 participating items purchased. However, getting .25 back for each item is… well… pretty weak. I didn’t blog this one due to lack of deals.
The front page of the Kroger ad is showing a special on Hallmark cards: Buy 3 cards and save $1.50 on your groceries instantly. The ad does NOT state that .99 cards are excluded. So, buy three .99 cards, and after instant-savings, you’ll pay $1.47 for three, or .49 each!

Here are your Hilander deals (also running at Logli and Schnucks)… View weekly ad
The Rockford-area Logli stores share the same ad as Hilander (Schnucks) now, so these deals apply at the four Rockford-area Logli stores as well. I have had some readers from DeKalb write and ask if these deals will also apply to their store. In looking at both ads, SOME of the deals are the same, but Rockford at times has a Hilander-specific wraparound that isn’t a part of the DeKalb Schnucks ad. Remember too that the DeKalb store does not double coupons.

Drugstore Deals
Heading to Walgreens (View weekly ad)…
NEW: IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT THE WALGREENS AD: If you thought this week’s Walgreens flyer looked a little light, you were right. The print ad has 12 pages, but the online ad has 18 pages. Evidently this is what Walgreens is going to be doing from now on, and I can’t say I’m thrilled about it. There are so many scenarios I can envision where one might want to refer back to the ad while in the store, and now a third of the ad won’t be available for shoppers to do that. Price-matching the Walgreens ad at another store will also be more difficult when much of the ad is missing.
I will be noting the online-ad-only deals with the “Bonus Buys” icon shown at right. This is the same icon Walgreens is also using in their online-only ad pages.

CVS Tips: Remember to always scan your CVS card at the Coupon Center scanner in the store — it prints bonus coupons for you!
And, if you haven’t already, make sure your CVS ExtraCare card is registered for the CVS Beauty Club before you do any deals involving beauty products. It gives you $5 in ECBs for every $50 you spend on beauty products, and it is cumulative, meaning you don’t have to spend $50 in one trip. It keeps track for you and will automatically print ECBs on your next visit to the store when you reach a $50 threshold.
Jewel-Osco | Dominick’s (Safeway) | Meijer | Kroger | Hilander (Schnucks) | Target | Walgreens | CVS | Walmart | Free |
Wrapping things up with Walmart…
Deals continuing from previous weeks:
Did you see the nice new $5 Purina One Beyond dog food coupon in the 1/15 SS? 3.5lb. bags sell for about $6.49 at Walmart (that’s what they were priced at in my area, anyway.) Use the coupon and pay $1.49!
Policies to know:
- Walmart will price match any competitor’s advertised price. Bring the other store’s flyers with you to the store.
- With the new coupon policy, Walmart will also accept other store’s STORE coupons with an actual price listed on them. For example, a Dominick’s store coupon advertising “.99 Ragu Pasta Sauce” would be accepted. A Walgreens store coupon advertising “2/$1 Morton’s Salt” would be accepted. (A Target store coupon for “$2.50 off Huggies” would not, because it does not show the actual selling price of the item.)
- With the new coupon policy, Walmart will also accept competitor’s Catalina manufacturer coupons. You can get a Catalina for $1 off Snuggle and use it at Walmart.
- Walmart’s new coupon policy specifically addresses coupon overage. It says “Coupons may exceed the price of the item. Change may be given or applied toward the cost of the basket purchase.”
I would print a copy and carry a copy of the coupon policy with you if you anticipate any issues.
I do not blog Walmart deals each week unless there is a weekly ad with noteworthy deals. Every store location’s regular prices are different, and Walmart does not issue a weekly ad every week. I’ve listed Walmart at the end of each week’s Deals writeup, because if you see any deals above that you want, you’ll likely also be able to do them at Walmart.

As always, these deals are guidelines for shopping. I can make no guarantee that these items will be on sale, in stock, or available at your area store. I can also not guarantee your Catalinas will print, your cashier will smile at you while you check out, or that your shopping cart won’t have a broken wheel. But I CAN teach you how to save money :)
And, also, as always, a huge thanks to the many readers who posted and emailed deals that made it into today’s Deals of the Week! We’re all in this together, and I sincerely appreciate everyone who spots and passes along good deals that we can all enjoy :) Thank you… to YOU!
* All You magazine: If you like coupons, you will probably really enjoy it. It’s an inexpensive magazine ($2.49 an issue) that is absolutely filled with coupons each month — typically $50-$100 worth per issue! Subscribing via the pink banner on the right drops the price to $1.67 per issue. Depending on the values, if you use 2 or 3 coupons alone from each issue, you’ve recouped the cost of the magazine, and you’re on your way to even bigger savings.)

Hi Everyone,
Has any one used the Crest 3D whitening strips? I have been wanting to try them and $24.99 is the cheapest I have seen them but that is still pretty expensive. Just wanted to get some opinoins before I bought them.
Thank you!!

Check your CVS coupons (from the in-store kiosk) from a few weeks back. I found a $1 off Softsoap bar soap coupon that I used to make the deal even sweeter! It expires on 2/18, if I remember correctly, and this is the perfect week to use it.
I bought (5) 4-bar packs at $3/ea., used (3) $1.50 coupons, (2) 50cent coupons, and the $1 store coupon. After the $5 rebate, I paid $3.50 + tax for 20 bars of soap, which I was really in need of! I’m overstocked on body wash, or I could have substituted one of those for an even better deal.

Stopped at the Target in Lake Zurich today to get Qtips. I grabbed my four boxes and a few other things and headed to the register. The cashier rung up my items and told me I can only use 3 like coupons in any order. She said Target has just changed their coupon policy. What?! I didn’t want to argue over 30 cents, so I just used 3 qtip coupons. Is this true or is this just another wayward cashier making her own rules?

I went to Target today and noticed that there’s also on sale the Multipack mentos which is on sale for 2 for 5.Target has a $1.00 store coupon and stack it with the manufacturer coupon of $1.00 from2/5 SS you would end up paying $1.00 for 2, which is 0.50 a pack. I hope this helps.

Jewel has a bunch of BOGOs for meat this week. It includes the Hormel pork tenderloins. There are some $1 Hormel ‘Always tender’ coupons out there. I had one printable and one from an insert. I found two smaller tenderloins at about $7 each, so I was able to get 2 pounds of tenderloin for about $5. My family really likes these, and they’re hard to find for that price.

I received another Honey Bunches of Oats $2 catalina at Dominicks yesterday. I bought 3 boxes @ $1.75, plus used a $1/2 that I cut out from inside a box. One of the boxes was on the discount shelf because the box had been damaged, so I got that one for 50% off of the sale price ($3), so $.25 for that box. I ended up getting all three for $2.75. Then a $2 catalina printed out! In January, I received a catalina notice that if I bought $10 worth of Honey Bunches before June, I would receive a $2 catalina. Apparently, they use the pre-coupon and pre-store discount totals to determine the $ spent.
I’m sending a (slightly late) Valentine’s box to my college son today, and I’ll put one of these in for him. He’ll be happy!

Anyone been able to find the diabetes monitor at Dom’s? I asked at mine (Geneva) and was told they don’t carry that kind of thing. I looked in the ad but didn’t see it. Would love to get one for my hubby – who always thinks he is diabetic – without having to spend a fortune.

The South Elgin Jewel has three varieties of Better Oats on clearance for $.99. I used the coupon off three and got them for $.66/each. I don’t think these will work with the catalina, but it’s a better deal to do this than the catalina one as long as you like the flavors. I think there are two different apple cinnamons and a cinnamon spice.

Watch out if you buy the Jewel shredded cheese on sale this week! I bought two yesterday of the Mexican variety, expires July 2012, and it was already moldy in the bags! I didn’t discover it until I went to serve tacos last night and dumped the cheese into a bowl! It was rather embarrassing since we had company over. I put the cheese back in the bags and returned them to the store today.

On another note, Target had fabulous clearance on last season’s melamine plates and dishes! Each item was sticker priced 30% off, but the sign hanging on the shelf said 50% off so they had to give it to me. I picked up fun turquoise, yellow and green dishes along with some black/red for about $1-$4 each. This included some good size serving bowls and platters as well that I can use this summer! The only bummer is they’re not microwaveable.

Just cant help but say something about this post. Testing blood sugar is not painless- the fingertips are full of nerve endings. Unnecessary testing of blood sugar just expose one to a lot of factors such as infection – by pricking ur fingers and eventually hardening of the skin of the fingertips (laymans term). I wouldnt sugest checking the blood sugar of nondiabetic patients.

Hi Jill,
How does the MaltOMeal @ Jewel deal work out? Do you get a $2 cat for EVERY 2 bags? I can’t imagine that would actually work, but I don’t have a lot of experience. I’m headed out before the sales end today, so thanks for any help you can provide.

If you bought a freezer from Jewel this year, check your freezer coupon book for a coupon for a free box of Mom’s Best Natuals cereal, then stack it with Jill’s deal below, which I adjusted slightly:
Mom’s Best Naturals cereal (12-16.5oz.) – $2
– Buy 3 and get a $2 Catalina
– Buy three and use the $1-off-2 printable and your free box of cereal coupon. You’ll pay $1 for 3, or about 33 cents each, after the deal. Awesome price for natural cereal!

I wanted to buy Turning Leaf wine at CVS and use the rebate off of their ad but the two closest CVS stores did not have any Turning Leaf wine yesterday. Does anybody know if to use the manufacturer’s rebate the wine has to be purchsed at CVS? Or could I get a price match at another store and mail in that receipt? Thanks!

I purchased 6 boxes of Quaker Oatmeal Squares at Jewel this past Sunday, I got the Catalina but when I checked on Savingstar it shows I’ve only spent $7.26 towards the $15 required. I can’t find anywhere on the site that shows what was purchased to match up to this amount. Do you happen to know where to find this info? Also has anyone else had a similar problem? This is the first time I’ve used Savingstar. Thanks for any insight you can provide.

Just got back from CVS and did the Speed Stick deal. I bought 8 of the men’s and the register took off $3.99 from the BOGO coupons instead of the $1.99 sale price. The cashier scanned the coupons and it came up automatically. So my total tax and all was $1.31 with a $5.00 Cash Bucks Reward.
I and the food pantry thank you Jill.

I went to jewel yesterday and purchased the 3/11 with a free coke pack worth 2.99 but it was not included in the deal. Only the coke products indicated in their add are included but the cashier took off the price of the free 2.99 coke pack making it the same deal with the add. One of the reasons i like shopping at jewel. Easy to deal with. The other day i was at walmart and the lady ahead of me is arguing with one of the managers who dosnt know their coupon policy. I waited patiently until another manager came over and agreed with the lady. For some unfortunate event this guy assisted me on the check out the sme thing happened. I was asking for.the price matching of the glucometer from dominicks and would get it free with the coupon but this guh wouldnt let me use the coupon coz im geting it for free.until the same lady came over. This guy doesnt know wat he should know.
