All systems GO! Late Sunday night, JillCataldo.com transitioned from a small webserver to a more robust one… and what better time to update the site’s appearance too? Your source for Chicagoland’s best grocery deals is now better than ever!
This week’s newspaper contained two inserts: one SmartSource and one P&G. Don’t toss your Tribune out just yet though — Section 1 has a Target store coupon for $1.50 GE light bulbs page 13. Clip & hang on to that to stack with current manufacturer coupons …
and if you receive another newspaper other than the Trib, the USA Weekend magazine (found in the Herald and others) has two $1 and .50 coupons for Cottonelle on page 3.

If you’re new to the site, take a quick minute to read Using this site and bring yourself up to speed on all the coupon lingo and abbreviations.
It’s a good idea to save the grocery and drugstore flyers from both Wednesday and Sunday each week to have on hand & refer to too as you go through the deals! And, if you’re new to couponing in general, check out my Super-Couponing® website for a list of coupon classes (most are FREE!) and easy instructions on how to start using coupons effectively!
A note to my non-Midwest readers: While my weekly deals focus on Illinois stores, the Target, Walgreens and CVS deals apply nationally. And, if you’re shopping at a SuperValu, Safeway, or Kroger-owned store, you may find similar sales to our Jewel, Dominick’s, and Hilander deals. Welcome, and enjoy!

Grocery Deals
Starting at Jewel, Crest Pro-Health toothpaste is our moneymaker of the week! The Cinnamon variety of Crest Pro-Health is on sale for $1.59. Jewel’s Avenu electronic coupons offer $1 off. Stack that with the $1 Crest coupon from 12/27 PG or the .75 coupon from 1/17 PG… with the $1 coupon, this is a .41 moneymaker! With the .75, it’s a .16 moneymaker. Either way… you’re getting FREE toothpaste with overage!
Mission corn tortillas are on sale for $1. Use the .75 coupon from 1/10 SS and pay just a quarter! If you did the Jewel Preferred Card Update promo in 2009 and have that book of great coupons, there’s another Mission coupon in there.
Like popcorn? Jolly Time microwave popcorn is on sale for $1. Use the .50 coupon from 1/10 SS and you’ll pay .50 a box!
Rice-a-Roni and Pasta-Roni sides are on sale for $1. Use the $1-off-3 coupon from 1/3 RP and pay $2 for 3, or .67 each…
Certain flavors of Halls cough drops are on sale for $1 too. Buy 2, use the $1-off-2 coupon from 1/10 SS and pay .50 a bag! Here’s a .50 printable (print 2!) if you’d like to buy more.
If you’ve got a little one in diapers, check out the baby section this week. Many readers are reporting numerous varieties of Baby Basics diapers 50% off – in the $4 range for jumbo packs and in the $10 range for boxes. Swim diapers of the same brand have been spotted for $1-$2. Note that the shelves may not show clearance prices – scan them at the price scanner. And, NONE of these are included in the current $25/$5 baby Catalina running at Jewel.
(Incidentally, I didn’t blog the baby deal in detail as it’s not really that great. Enfamil and Similac formuls are included though, so if you’re formula feeding and you have coupons/checks for the formula, you certainly could get over the $25 mark easily. Same for the people reporting Pampers diaper and wipe discounts on Avenu! Remember that there isn’t typically a price spread on Osco items (no black-belt deals) so this would be an “only if you need it” deal…
Jennie-O turkey hot dogs continue to be super-cheap too. On sale for $1 a package, buy two and use the $1-off-2 coupon from 1/3 SS1 — you’ll take two home for $1, or .50 each! Note that not all Jewel stores stock the turkey dogs, but if yours does… that’s a great price. This sale is scheduled to run through Wednesday, 1/20, though many readers are reporting sale tags removed from the shelves. Check with your price scanner.
Anytime meat is under $1.99 a pound (no matter what it is — beef, pork, poultry, or seafood) it’s a buy in my book, because $1.99 is a cycle low and a good benchmark for meat prices.
Jewel meat deals:
Fresh chicken pieces (drumsticks, thighs, leg quarters, split breasts or whole cut fryers) are $1 a pound… that’s a GREAT price, as it’s half our usual per-pound cycle low. If you’ve got a freezer, stock up!
Fresh cut pork shoulder roast is $1.49/lb, with pork rost supreme at $1.99/lb.
Perdue twin packs of Cornish hens are $1.99/lb.
Over at Dominick’s, DiGiorno pizzas are on sale for $3.99, limit one. Use the $1 coupon from 8/16 SS (Ultimate toppings), the $1.50 coupon from 5/17 SS, or the $1 coupon from 8/2 SS (Crispy flatbread crust) to get one for $2.49 – $2.99… not bad!
Dominick’s is running a good “Buy 5, save $5″ deal on juices and juice drinks. You must buy in quantities of 5 (5, 10, 15, etc) to receive the sale prices. Here are your matchups:
$1.49 group (buy 5, and the price is $1.49 each
Mott’s apple juice
Nestle Juicy Juice
– .50 off 2 – 8/9 RP
– $1 off 2 – printable
– $1 off 2 – June 2009 All You
– $1 off – 4/26 SS
Langer’s
Minute Maid individual juice packs
$1.99 group (buy 5, and the price is $1.99 each
Welch’s grape juice
– .75 off – 8/16 SS
V8 Red
– .50 off 2 – 1/3 SS, 9/20 SS
V8 Fusion
– $1 off printable
– .50 off – 1/3 SS
Ocean Spray Cranergy
Ocean-Spray 4-bottle packs
My thoughts? Even with NO coupons, the Mott’s, Juicy Juice, and Langers are at stock-up prices. $1.49 a bottle is a very good price. Coupons, of course, make these deals even better!
You could do a deal like this:
Buy 4 Juicy Juice and 1 V8 Fusion
Use two $1-off-2 printables and one $1 printable
Pay $4.95 for 5 juices! That’s under $1 a bottle!
Selected varieties of Gillette Foamy shaving cream are on sale for .99 too this week. Use the $1 coupon from 11/29 PG and it’s yours… FREE!
As usual, there are some good Dominick’s Super Coupons* in this week’s ads too. Best bets?
Boneless Skinless chicken breasts – $1.49/lb (sold in 4lb. bag)
Quaker Chewy granola bars– $0.99 (see deal below)
Ore-Ida frozen potatoes – $0.99 (see deal below)
Wish-Bone salad dressing – $0.99 (see deal below)
Dominick’s hot dog or hamburger buns – .99
Lucerne 18ct. large eggs – .99
Quaker Chewy granola bars are .99 a box, limit 3, with the store Super Coupon in the Jan. 14th Dominick’s ad. Stack this with a $1-off-2 coupon from 1/3 RP1, and you’ll take home two boxes for .99! There are also .75-off-2 coupons in 10/11 RP, 8/30 RP and 6/21 RP if you’re making multiple trips — remember, these are limit 3, so it’s best to buy 2 per transaction to make these the best deal.
Ore-Ida frozen potatoes (fries, tater tots) are $1.99 a 20-32-ounce bag with the store Super Coupon in the same ad. There’s a $1.50 off 2 in 9/27 SS. Buy two, use this coupon, and take TWO bags home for $2.48 – that’s $1.24 apiece! The February issue of All You also has a $1-off-2 coupon. With this, take TWO bags home for $2.98, or $1.49 each!
Wish-Bone salad dressing is .99 a bottle, limit 3, with the store Super Coupon as well. Use the $1 coupon from 6/28 RP (“Bountifuls” variety) to take this home for FREE! There are additional coupons for other varieties of Wish-Bone too — 6/28 RP has a $1.25-off-2, and 8/2 RP has a $1-off-2 if you’d like to add two more (inexpensive!) bottles to your trip…
Softsoap 7.5 ounce pumps continue to be $1 each. There are numerous expired .35 coupons out for these that will bring them down to just .65 each: 4/26/09 SS, 3/29/09 SS, 2/1/09 SS, or 1/4/09 SS.
Dominick’s meat deals:
Fresh chicken drumsticks, thighs or leg quarters are $.99/lb.
Boneless skinless chicken breasts are 1.49/lb. with super coupon (see above…)
80% lean ground beef is $1.69/lb.
*A note on Dominick’s Super Coupons: All Super Coupons require a total purchase of $10 or more to use. But, the “Minimum $10 purchase” applies to the REGULAR, non-sale price of those items. Really! It’s even spelled out very well on Safeway’s corporate site:
What does “minimum $10 (or $20) purchase required” mean? To use store coupons that include a minimum purchase requirement, you must spend a minimum dollar amount on that shopping trip. You will reach the minimum purchase amount based upon total purchases before your Club Card discount is applied. This total will include the coupon item’s regular price, not the discounted price. For example, the regular retail price of a box of Cheerios (before coupon and before Club Card discounts) will count toward the minimum purchase required in order to use the Cheerios coupon.
So, knowing this, getting over that qualifying dollar amount isn’t as hard as it seems.
At Meijer, we have yet another good fruit snack deal running! Betty Crocker/GM fruit snacks are on sale for $1.75 a box. When you buy 4, you will get an instant $4 savings. AND, if you remember the deal we recently had at Jewel, where you also received a Catalina for money off your next order (Buy 3 get $1.50, buy 4 get $2.50, buy 5 get $3.50) — well, it’s running at Meijer too!
So… here’s the best way to do this deal.
Buy 4 boxes of fruit snacks at $1.75 each ($7)
$4 is instantly deducted.
Pay $3 and get a $2.50 Catalina back! FOUR boxes for .50!
With coupons, of course, this one’s even more fun.
Use two .50-off-2 coupons (1/3 GM, printable, another printable.)
With 2 coupons, pay $2 and get $2.50 back! That’s a moneymaker if I ever saw one! :)
Dole salads are on sale for $1. Meijer Mealbox has $1 printables for Dole salads (excluding Classic Iceberg.) Print and enjoy your FREE salad!
Meijer meat deals:
Fresh chicken drumsticks and thighs are $0.99/lb…
Fresh pork spare ribs are on sale for $1.69/lb.
Angus ground beef is on sale for $1.99/lb.
Note that Meijers in other states are on different schedules. The Illinois Meijers are about a week behind on the sales vs. Indiana/Michigan. If you’re in Illinois, these Meijer deals run through Wednesday. If you’re reading from another state, they ENDED Saturday at your store… Confusing? Yes.
For my Rockford-area readers, Hilander has some good deals this week too…
Blog reader Ellen noted that the recurring Hilander deal on Tony’s pizza is back yet again. Tony’s pizzas are on sale for $1. Use the .50 coupon from 12/13 SS, which will double to $1… making this FREE!
Pillsbury refrigerated rolls are a steal this week too. On sale for $1 a can, there are numerous .40-off-2 coupons that will double to .80. Buy 2 cans and you’re paying just .10 per can!
Your Pillsbury matchups:
– 1/3 GM, 12/13 GM, 12/6 SS, 11/22 SS, printable, another printable
Pillsbury brownie mix is a bargain too. It’s also on sale for $1. Use the .40 coupon from 11/8 RP. It will double to .80, making your brownies just .20!
Old El Paso Heat & Serve side dishes are on sale for $1.25. Use this .50 coupon (which doubles to $1) and you’ll take this home for just .25!
Hilander meat deals:
Cook’s or Sugardale hams are .99/lb…
Pork steaks are $1.49/lb…
Perdue boneless skinless chicken breasts are $1.77/lb…
Boneless pork loin is also $1.77/lb…
Off to Target… Nivea body wash is FREE after this coupon stack! Nivea wash is on sale for $2.99. Go to Target’s site and print the store coupon for $1 off. Stack it with the $2 Nivea coupon from 1/3 RP2, and you’re taking this home for FREE!
If you missed the cheap Ivory Soap deal at Jewel, you can pick it up at Target! 3-packs of Ivory are on sale from $1.02-$1.07. Use the $1 coupon from 12/27 and take 3 bars of soap home for around a nickel!
Drugstore Deals
Heading to Walgreens, Revlon mascaras and lipsticks are CHEAP! Revlon Double Twist mascara or Revlon ColorBurst lip color are both on sale for $6.99 with a $5 Register Reward (one per transaction.) Use the $1 coupon from 1/17 SS, pay $5.99 and get $5 back, making these just .99 apiece!
(Note that this $5 RR is good for another Revlon purchase, not a general merchandise purchase — similar to the Sally Hansen RR we had a couple months ago.)
Here’s an inexpensive flu relief deal. Wags has a RR deal going when you buy Theraflu and Lipton tea bags. Theraflu’s on sale for $3.99, and the Lipton tea is $2.99. Use a $2 coupon (printable, another printable, yet another printable,) pay $4.98 for both… and get $4 back! CHEAP for tea and Theraflu!
And finally, over at CVS, the good deal on Oust air and surface sanitizer continues again. Oust is on sale for $3.99 a can. For each can you buy, you’ll get $3 back in ECBs, limit 3. Buy 2, use the Buy One, Get One Free Oust coupon from 1/3 SS. Pay $3.99 and get $6 back! Hello there, moneymaker! If you have multiple inserts, buy 4, use 2 coupons, pay $7.98 and get $9 back.
As this has been running for a few weeks now, it seems to be getting a little easier to find on the shelves too…
SoyJoy 6-packs snack bars are free after ECB too. They’re on sale for $6 with $6 back in Extra Care Bucks!
And, the Nature’s Bounty vitamin sale continues. Nature’s Bounty is on sale for $8.99, Buy One, Get One Free, with $3 in ECBs coming right back to you for buying two. So buy two, use two $2 coupons (1/10 SS, printable), pay $4.99… and get $3 back! This knocks it down to about $1 a bottle…
CVS Tip: Remember to always scan your CVS card at the price scanner in the store — it prints bonus coupons for you!

As always, these deals are guidelines for shopping. I can make no guarantee that these items will be on sale, in stock, or available at your area store. I can also not guarantee your Catalinas will print, your cashier will smile at you while you check out, or that your shopping cart won’t have a broken wheel. But I CAN teach you how to save money :)
* (All You magazine is not a requirement for using the site, but if you like coupons, you will probably really enjoy it. It’s a cheap ($2.49 an issue) magazine that is absolutely filled with coupons each month — typically $50-$100 worth per issue! You can subscribe to All You online and save about $10/year off the cover price. And depending on the values, if you use 2 or 3 coupons alone from each issue, you’ve recouped the cost of the magazine, and you’re on your way to even bigger savings.)

I bought the bonus package of Revlon Double Twist mascara on Sunday. Wasn’t sure if the bonus pack would work but I thought I would try and it worked! So, I got 2 mascara’s for free after the $5 Revlon coupon because I used a $2 mfg coupon, which expired on Sunday. With the $1 coupon Jill mentions above, you would get 2 mascaras for $1 so still a great deal!

The Betty Crocker fruit flavored shapes aren’t included in the instant $4 from what I have been reading, it’s only the Fruit by the Foot, Fruit Roll Ups, Fruit Gushers, and Stickerz for $1.75/each. The shapes are $1.89 at my Meijer. I added one shape, 4-$1.75 snacks along with Chex Mix so I could get the bonus 70 Box Tops and I got the $3.50 catalina for buying 5 fruit snacks.

Looks like the free milk coupon has changed to “Free White Milk Gallon–any brand–with $100 grocery purchase”. I had printed the chocolate milk one a few days ago, and it let me print this one today, no problems.
cschelthoff says
Again, Jill, you’re making me think I’m nuts (well, strike that one). The Nivea body wash coupon is in the 1/3 RP II, the one with either Beyonce or the dog on the cover (make your own jokes) depending on it being a Tribune or other insert.

Here’s the site to try to win free milk: https://promotions.whymilk.com/ggg/?utm_campaign=GGG&utm_source=Site_WM&utm_medium=Bug2 after you submit email there will be a coupon at bottom for free milk with a 100 dollar purchase.

Hey Jill! Either you got an awesome coupon my ad didn’t have or it’s a late-night-typo ;), but my Dominick’s Ore Ida super coupon brought the price to $1.99 a bag not $.99 a bag. I still thought $1.99 a bag was a good price especially when you deduct the manf. coupons.
Love the new site!!

Is anyone else having trouble finding the nivea coupon on the target site? Can someone steer me in the right dorection? Thanks
woodyswife says
Love the new website design/layout really cool! If I could make one small suggestion, the links or print here items need to be in different color font/bold even. It’s really hard (as you get older) to know at a glance where to look for to print these tidbit/secrets….. Any ways Love You Jill, keep up the awesome work!

I didn’t see any discussion re: the BOGO Blue Diamond almonds… Is this considered a good deal w/ coupon? I’m knew to this process and have been finding that the deals just keep getting better and cheaper, so wonder if I’m stocking up too soon… or rather, should wait until the deal gets even better…?
Thanks for everything you do Jill- I love your site!
poetangel says
Hi!
I’m not at all new to couponing, but still vaguely new to Jill’s blog/site. Why do you post deals today that expire tomorrow? I want to know what to go out and get Thursday…just not sure I understand your weekly deal format.
Thanks!
clipsalot says
At my Jewel, the night pro health was also on clearance for $1.59. There were no big clearance tags like the ones for the cinnamon, but the small white tag did say clearance price $1.59. My husband is not a fan of cinnamon toothpaste, so this works out well for us!
jankygirl says
Was this not a good deal at Walgreens?
Buy $20 get $10 for the Vicks DayQuick/NyQuil
I used 2 $2.00 off and 1 $1.50 off.
Paid out of Pocket 14.50 and got $10 back. Brought the price of each to $1.13
Also I got 4 mac n cheese for .22 cents a box (was in desperate need of some)
Was it a good deal on Vicks?
dhc says
this coupon does not work on the bottles of juicy juice…just fyi…it’s for a different juicy juice product that my dominick’s doesn’t even carry.

The deal for Gillette Foamy Shaving Cream states that it is selling for 99 cents and that the coupon is for $1.00. The cashier told me she could not adjust the coupon down. I looked through Jill’s website and cannot find any information on this policy. Does anyone know where to look?
dhc says
ugh…dominick’s would not take my $1 coupon for the gillette shaving cream. they said that the .99 cent shaving cream doesn’t match up to the product listed on the coupon. I give up…I really don’t like shopping at dominicks…did the pizza and juice deal and got out of there as fast as I could. went to my friendly walgreens and ejoyed my visit.

I was just at Doms in C’ville (yes, I know!) and Softsoap is priced at $0.88 – price is good thru Jan 27. So that brings it down to $0.53 each with the .35 coupon :D

I had a question about the Nivea coupon at Target. I went to Target today and the body wash on sale was for men, however the coupons in the inserts are for women’s or lotion. Am I missing something? Not sure how to get that free. Thanks.
fryklin says
I’m rather new at couponing (LOVING it so far!!!) and don’t believe I know the store policies well enough to raise a fuss with the cashier, but wondering what I did wrong with the following:
I recently tried to purchase the following items at Walgreens and the cashier said I had to remove one coupon in order for the deal to work (the scanner wouldn’t accept my Walgreens register rewards with the number of manufacturer coupons I was using):
I purchased 2 Blue Diamond nuts (which were buy one get one free) and two Jergens (which were two for $12)
I used 2 $1 off a Jergens manufacturer coupons, a $1 off two Blue Diamonds manufacturer coupon and a $10 off Walgreens Register Rewards
Therefore I purchased 4 items total and had 4 coupons, which I planned out specifically because I thought that was the rule. Anyone know what I did wrong with this? Or what the policy is that I’m missing?
Thanks!
mdresnin says
Yes, the same thing happened to me recently. The manager even came over because I was so confused ;-)
He said that you can’t use more coupons that items (which makes sense). I told him I thought RR’s were different and he pointed out that it says ‘manufactures coupon’ on it so one per item. I guess I never used that many coupons before so I haven’t run into that situation.
Blessed says
The past two times I have used more coupons than I have items, I just added one caramel to my order. The container of caramels are right next to the register at the Elgin and South Elgin stores, and I think they cost 25 cents each. This made my number of items equal the number of coupons and the deal worked both times!
