A note to my non-Midwest readers: While my weekly deals focus on some Chicagoland stores, the Kroger, Target, Walgreens and CVS deals apply nationally. And, if you’re shopping at a SuperValu or Safeway store you may find similar sales to our Jewel-Osco and Dominick’s deals. Welcome, and enjoy!



Unless otherwise noted, GROCERY store deals run through WEDNESDAY of this week,
and the drugstore/general merchandise store deals run through Saturday.

(Also, if you’re new, you may not have some of the coupon books that I refer to for some deals. Some coupon books can be found at the grocery store during seasonal promotions — look for them, as I’ll reference them when applicable. And, throughout the year, companies issue free coupon books that you can request to be mailed to you — register for them if you’d like, as I’ll reference them in future weeks’ deals.

“Deals of the Week” is written assuming you are using the inserts from the Chicago Tribune (or, if reading from outside Chicagoland, the largest newspaper serving your market area. That largest paper has the most, highest-value coupons. The content, coupons, and dollar amounts of the coupons in the RedPlum and SmartSource inserts differs by paper, so to coupon effectively, it’s best to subscribe to the paper that contains the highest-value coupons.)

IMPORTANT JEWEL-OSCO NOTE: All Jewel locations have updated their cash registers to a new system. If you are using TWO coupons on a Buy One, Get One Free sale, the register is currently scanning the second coupon as $0.00. The register will not beep and you will have no way of knowing your coupon’s value did not get recognized unless you are watching closely. Jewel is working on a solution to this problem and I have a response from corporate here indicating that their two-coupons-on-a-B1G1F policy has NOT changed. Watch your registers.

ANOTHER IMPORTANT JEWEL-OSCO NOTE: Jewel-Osco has discontinued its Avenu ecoupons as of today, 6/18/12. The ecoupons you can currently use with Jewel-Osco now are via SavingStar and Jewel-Osco’s new ecoupons. Note that the ecoupons you can load to card are often the same as the ones you can print at Coupons.com. If you print them, you get two prints, but if you load them, you only get ONE. Just an FYI.

Jewel-Osco Grocery Deals

Visa Gift Cards have a $5.95 activation fee that you will pay to activate your “free” $10 card. So, this is really a “Spend $30, Get $4.05” deal, which isn’t much of a deal AT all.

The only thing that could have saved this deal would have been to have Head and Shoulders included (there’s a nice B1G1F coupon in today’s 7/1 PG) but… it’s not. And nothing else here is stellar. Not even worth writing up…

Note to Safeway shoppers reading from outside Chicagoland: In Chicago, Dominick’s does not double coupons (as other Safeway stores do) – if your store doubles, you’ll do even better with many of these deals. Also in Chicago, previously-available ecoupons (Cellfire, ShortCuts and PGEsaver) have been discontinued. Ecoupons are now available in the “Just For U / Coupon Center” section of electronic coupons available at Dominicks.com.

Dominicks Store Coupons

In the July 5-July 11 flyer – “Real Big Deals” on the cover:

  • Yoplait Go-Gurt or Trix Yogurt (4-8ct.) are $1.88, limit 3, with coupon. Buy two and use the .75 coupon from the 7/8 SS or 6/10 SS. You’ll pay $3.01 for two, or about $1.50 each!
  • Minute Maid Orange Juice (89oz.) is $3.99, limit 2, with coupon.

Dominicks Just For U

  • Safeway apple juice (64oz.) are $1.69 each, limit 3
  • Bumble Bee solid white Albacore tuna (5oz.) are .99 each, limit 4
  • Hormel Black Label bacon (12-16oz.) are $2.99, limit 3

Dominicks Grocery Deals

In store, look for the monthly “Fresh Ideas” magazine – it has a $1 manufacturer coupon for Odwalla in it. Or, print your own at home at this link. (Yes, they print as PDFs, so you can print five – it’s legitimately offered this way.)

With the $3-off-$10 produce ecoupon loaded, buying five Odwallas will cost you $7 (yes, Odwalla is a produce department product!) But with five $1 manufacturer coupons, you’re looking at $2 for all five, or just .40 each! GREAT price for this if you like ’em!

With the $3-off-$10 loaded, buying four Poms will cost you $7 (yes, Pom is a produce department product!) Now, use up to four $1 coupons from the 6/24 SS, or use $1 printables [another printable here!] With four coupons, pay $3 for four bottles of juice, or .75 each! GREAT price for Pom Wonderful!

For a Fiber One bars deal, use this .50 printable and pay $1.49! The 6/24 SS has a .50-off-2 Fiber One coupon too.

Safeway’s online price guide lists a package of Oreos at a whopping $5.29. With no coupons, you’ll pay $5.29 for all three things, or about $1.76 each.

There’s a $1-off-2 Nabisco printable, but remember that you can’t use a coupon on a FREE item at Dominick’s. If you want to use the coupon, you CAN do the deal twice per Fresh Values card. With this coupon, buy two Oreos, two Golden Oreos, and two Refreshe. Pay $9.58 for everything, or about $1.60 per item.

Several readers have found Hefty Trash Bags on their Just For U priced at $5.49. After the “Buy 2” savings, they drop to $2.49. With the .55 coupon from the 5/13 SS, pay $1.94!

“No Coupon Needed” Dominick’s Deals

  • Fresh Safeway chicken drumsticks or thighs are $1.29/lb.
  • Fresh Safeway whole roasting chickens are $1.29/lb.
  • Open Nature all-natural chickens are $1.69/lb.
  • Pork loin rib half sliced are $1.49lb.
  • Pork shoulder blade roast is $1.99/lb.

  • THROUGH MONDAY ONLY: 32oz. bags of Safeway Tilaipia fillets are $7.99 – that’s about $4/lb.

With two $1 coupons and one .75 coupon buy three. Pay $6.25 and get $2 back, making these $4.25 for three, or $1.42 each. With access to multiple computers, use more $1 printables…

The 6/17 TARGET ad has a $2-off-2 store coupon for Tide. Stack that with two $1 manufacturer coupons from the 7/1 PG. You’ll pay $20 for two and get a $5 Target gift card! That’s $15 for two, or $7.50 each. Not a bad price for the bigger bottles/boxes of Tide. But I’d avoid the Duo Pacs. (Really? The 34-load Duo Pacs cost the same price as the 68-load powder?! What’s up with that? The convenience of throwing that little pod in is so not worth paying twice as much per load..!)

I’m always frustrated with deals that end in such strange numbers – there’s no good way to get to $30 without throwing in items you don’t want or need – apparently Walgreens’ intention, but not exactly designed with the customer in mind. Still, here are some ideas:

A Metamucil Deal
Buy 2 Metamucil and one Tums ($32.) Use two $1 Metamucil coupons and one $1 Tums coupon (now $29.)
Pay $29 and get $10 in RRs! That’s $19 for two Metamucil, or $9.50 each, plus “free” Tums.

Zantac Deals
Buy 3 Zantac and one Tums ($31.) Use three $5 Zantac coupons and one $1 Tums coupon (now $15.)
Pay $15 and get $10 in RRs! That’s $5 for three Zantac, or about $1.67 each – great price! Plus, you also get the “free” Tums.

OR, do the deal this way. Buy 4 Zantac ($36.) Use four $5 Zantac coupons (now $16.) Pay $16 and get $10 back, making these $6 for four, or $1.50 each!

  • 24ct. Penway Crayons are .39 each, limit 3, with store coupon.
  • Wexford 2-pocket folders are 8-for-$1, or about .13 each, limit 16, with store coupon.
  • Wexford or Penway filler paper (130 sheet wide or college rule) is .79, limit 3, with store coupon.
  • Penway classic marker 10-packs are $1.99 each, or 2-for-$3.
  • Fiskars Safety Scissors are .99 each
  • 20ct. Wexford yellow pencils are .99
  • Elmer’s 6ct. glue sticks are $2.99 (we will likely see these cheaper as we get closer to back-to-school.)
  • Backpacks are on sale for $10.99, B1G1F – that’s two backpacks for about $5.50 each

If you like Pop-Tarts, buy eight boxes ($16.) Use two $1-off-3 coupons (now $14.) Pay $14 and get $5 back. That’s $9 for eight boxes, or about $1.13 each.

Do a similar deal with Kellogg’s Cereals. Buy 6 boxes ($15.) Use two $1-off-3 coupons (now $13.) Pay $13 and get $5 back. That’s $8 for 6 boxes, or $1.33 each.

If you need juice boxes, buying 5 puts you at $15. Pay $15 and get $5 back, dropping them to $2 each after the deal.

Garnier Haircare
Garnier haircare items are cheap. Buying 5 puts you at $14.95. (CVS’s ECB offers usually trigger within a few pennies of the total.) Use five $1 coupons. Pay $9.95 and get $5 back in ECBs. That’s $4.95 for 5, or .99 each!

Ganier Moisturizers
Buy two Rescue Gel-Cream moisturizers ($14) and one Garnier haircare (now $16.99.)
Use three $1 coupons (now $13.99)
Pay $13.99 and get $5 back. That’s $8.99 for two moisturizers, or about $4.50 each.. plus “free” haircare.

(If you chose the $3-off-$15 Beauty coupon from CVS’s Facebook rewards this week, work it into the deals too!)

“No Coupon Needed” Deals

CVS Tips: Remember to always scan your CVS card at the Coupon Center scanner in the store — it prints bonus coupons for you! You may want to scan your coupon more than once – it’s been printing different coupons on subsequent scans!

And, if you haven’t already, make sure your CVS ExtraCare card is registered for the CVS Beauty Club before you do any deals involving beauty products. It gives you $5 in ECBs for every $50 you spend on beauty products, and it is cumulative, meaning you don’t have to spend $50 in one trip. It keeps track for you and will automatically print ECBs on your next visit to the store when you reach a $50 threshold.

Policies to know:

  • Walmart will price match any competitor’s advertised price. Bring the other store’s flyers with you to the store. While the policy doesn’t require this, it does speed the price-matching along.
     
  • With the new coupon policy, Walmart will also accept other store’s STORE coupons with an actual price listed on them. For example, a Dominick’s store coupon advertising “.99 Ragu Pasta Sauce” would be accepted. A Walgreens store coupon advertising “2/$1 Morton’s Salt” would be accepted. (A Target store coupon for “$2.50 off Huggies” would not, because it does not show the actual selling price of the item.)
     
  • With the new coupon policy, Walmart will also accept competitor’s Catalina manufacturer coupons. You can get a Catalina for $1 off Snuggle and use it at Walmart.
     
  • Walmart’s new coupon policy specifically addresses coupon overage. It says “Coupons may exceed the price of the item. Change may be given or applied toward the cost of the basket purchase.”
     

I would print a copy and carry a copy of the coupon policy with you if you anticipate any issues.

I do not blog Walmart deals each week unless there is a weekly ad with noteworthy deals. Every store location’s regular prices are different, and Walmart does not issue a weekly ad every week. I’ve listed Walmart at the end of each week’s Deals writeup, because if you see any deals above that you want, you’ll likely also be able to do them at Walmart.

  3. you can buy any two types of Oreos for this deal—it doesn’t have to be Golden that are free–any kind works. I bought 2 mint fudge oreos and one was free along with a free 12 pack of creme soda.

  10. I noticed that there is a ‘$1 off any one Hormel Always Tender flavored meats’ on coupons.com. The pic shows pork shoulders, but the wording says ‘any’-wouldn’t it work on the rib deal at Target? Jill??

  11. The Dominicks in Fox Lake gave me a hard time and didnt want to take my $3 off $10 product Q on the deal. They insisted that even though both products were in the produce dept. that they actually have them entered as grocery in their system. UGH

    Newbie here. Thanks so much for your hard work. Just wanted to say I went to Walgreen’s for the Johnson’s Baby Lotion/Soap and the ones on sale are exactly as pictured in the ad. The Johnson’s Naturals are not on sale and are $6+ and neither is the Bedtime Wash/Lotion.

  16. This weekend while at Jewel in Mchenry, I found an end cap of kraft Parmesan cheese. There was a rip off tag for a recipe and inside it there was a $1.00 off a produce purchase with the purchase of the cheese. But the coupons do not expire until October 2012. So I will sit on these coupons and wait to see if a coupon for the kraft cheese comes out with another coupon in a few weeks. The coupons look like recipes and they were only on the end cap, not by the rest of the kraft stuff. Happy Shopping.

  18. Check your Dominick’s J4U…this morning I had J4U mfr cpn for a free Glade Expressions Starter Kit (up to $8.99 value)….just did the deal…paid a total of 63 cents (tax)……plus in the box there are 3 $1 cpns for Glade products :)

  23. I just wanted to chime in on the cookie bars. I saw them at Walgreens for .69/ea or 3/$2. I believe it would work out as buy 4 for $2.69 and use two .55 cent coupons (7/8 SS) for $1.59 or just under .40 cents a piece.

    Mariano’s has double coupons on Wednesdays – 5 coupons <= $1/each can be doubled with $25 purchase. My Mariano's has 250 count Marcal napkins for $2.69. With a double coupon that's 250 napkins for $0.69.

  26. Did someone find the 8ct. Yosicle Popsicles on sale for $1 or was it on last week’s ad? If so, which Schnucks location? Couldn’t find them.
