Super-Couponers, welcome to another week of great deals! We have a lot of new readers joining us this week from the ABC Nightline segment that aired on Thursday.
Many people who watched the piece have commented at length on the differences between what I chose to buy and what the other shopper, Nathan, did. Certainly, when you’re approached about doing a national television piece, you can go one of two ways with your shopping trip. I chose to shop not only in a way that’s representative of how I would normally shop, but also how I think -most- people shop. And, one of the coupon myths I constantly hear is that “you need coupon doubling to save big with coupons.” Here in Chicagoland, we don’t have doubles, and we still enjoy great savings. Another myth? “There are no coupons for healthy foods or organics.” Busted! :)
Any time I can cut a $118 bill down to $50 (and get $20 back for my next trip, so essentially slashed it to $30!) and that receipt includes eight filet mignons, a 3lb. beef roast, 14 pounds of fresh produce, a case of diapers, a bag of premium dog food, seven boxes of healthy cereals, organic milk and then some (my full shopping list here)… it’s a good day for me! And I wanted to show a national audience what my readers already know — we CAN save big on healthy, good, not over-processed foods. Hope you enjoyed it :)
This week’s newspaper contained three inserts: two SmartSource and one RedPlum.
Ready for Chicagoland’s best Deals of the Week? You’ll be taking home MORE free cereal, FREE and cheap Oscar Mayer lunchmeats, cheap frozen foods, .24 Scrubbing Bubbles bathroom cleaners, FREE toothpaste, FREE vitamins… and more! Let’s get started!

If you’re new to the site, take a quick minute to read Using this site and bring yourself up to speed on all the coupon lingo and abbreviations.
It’s a good idea to save the grocery and drugstore flyers from both Wednesday and Sunday each week to have on hand & refer to too as you go through the deals! And, if you’re new to couponing in general, check out my Super-Couponing® website for a list of coupon classes (most are FREE!) and easy instructions on how to start using coupons effectively!
A note to my non-Midwest readers: While my weekly deals focus on Illinois stores, the Target, Walgreens and CVS deals apply nationally. And, if you’re shopping at a SuperValu, Safeway, or Kroger-owned store, you may find similar sales to our Jewel, Dominick’s, and Hilander deals. Welcome, and enjoy!

Grocery Deals
Starting at Jewel, their Refund Rewards program on Jewel store gift cards is still running. Buy a $250 Jewel gift card and get an extra $20 loaded to the card! Buy a $300 Jewel gift card and get an extra $30 loaded to the card! This is a SWEET deal if you know you’ll be shopping at Jewel for awhile (and can spare putting that money out there to reap a very nice 10% in extra free money!) This deal continues through April 15th, Tax Day…
Milk and Cereal Deal is back!
Jewel is running a special on Kellogg’s cereal and milk. Kellogg’s cereals are on sale for $1.98 each. Buy 3 cereals and get a Catalina for 1 free gallon of milk. Buy 5 and get 2 free gallons, or buy 7 and get 3 free gallons.
While this is not a great price for the cereal alone, the milk definitely sweetens the deal (many of us do this deal simply to get discounts on ORGANIC milk, as the Catalina’s value is up to $4.19 off a gallon.) Obviously, the best deal involves the 3 gallons, so here are some scenarios…
With no coupons: pay $13.96 for 7 Kellogg’s and 3 gallons of milk.
Insert and printables scenario: The 3/7 RP has a $1-off-2 coupon for Kellogg’s. Cut this, and then print two $1.50 off 2 Frosted Mini Wheats. Also, print two more $1.50 off Frosted Mini-Wheats coupons. (You should be able to print 2 of each coupon.)
So… buy 4 Frosted Mini Wheats and 3 others of your choice. With four printables and 1 insert coupon, pay $6.96 for 7 cereals and 3 milks! If you find the .70 Kellogg’s blinkie dispenser coupons at your store, use one on your last box, and you’ll pay $6.26 for $12.57 worth of milk and 7 boxes of cereal. Now that’ a deal!
Blinkie scenario: Look for .70 Kellogg’s coupons in the blinkie dispenser. With 7 blinkies, pay $9.06. If you go with organic milk and actually spend the full $4.19 per coupon on milk, you’re getting $12.57 worth of milk AND 7 boxes of cereal for $9.06. Not bad either.
Post cereal deal returns!
In my Super-Couponing classes, I always mention that I don’t pay more than a quarter for any name-brand box of cereal. People’s first reaction is usually one of shock — in an area where stores double coupons, this is easy to do — but it’s certainly not impossible here in Chicagoland either! Get ready to take some home…
Fruity, Cocoa, and Cupcake Pebbles are on sale for $1.59 a box. Buy 4 and get a $3 Catalina back, or buy 5 and get a $4 Catalina back.
The Fruity and Cocoa Pebbles are involved in a second Catalina deal — YourBucks! Buy 2 or more of either and get another $2 Catalina.
So, let’s do the math! With NO coupons, buy 5, pay $7.95 and get $6 back! 5 boxes for $1.95 is .39 a box! Already a good deal.
With coupons, though, it’s even better. With two $1-off-2 coupons from the 3/14 SS and 2/28 SS inserts, pay $5.95 and get $6 back! FREE cereal and a small moneymaker! (NOTE that the second YourBucks Catalina deal is ONLY on the Cocoa or Fruity Pebbles, not the Cupcake, so if you’re doing the deal, make sure at least 2 of your 5 boxes are COCOA or FRUITY.
If this sale seems familiar to you, an identical deal was running LAST week on Post Honey Bunches of Oats, and you may have seen me do that deal on ABC’s Nightline on Thursday! :)
The YourBucks Catalina promotion continues to rock and roll! If you haven’t been following this deal, Jewel is offering a rotating set of Catalina deals that you activate with your Jewel Preferred card. Head over to tv.catalinamarketing.com and sign up with your card number to activate the electronic coupons that result in Catalinas when you buy featured products. Note that it takes 36 hours to activate these discounts. YOU MUST OPT-IN TO RECEIVE THESE CATALINAS.
Best bets this week?

Coffee-Mate’s also in a YourBucks promo, oh yes… buy 2 and get .75 back in a YourBucks Catalina! Hello, moneymaker! WHAT’S EVEN BETTER? Coffee-Mate is in the “Buy 10, get the 11th free” item sale too. Oh, to the Jewel managers who read my blog each week… stock lots, and lots, and lots of Coffeemate…
- Oscar Mayer bologna or salami 12oz. packages are on sale for $1. Use the $1-off-2 coupon from 3/7 SS, pay $1 for two and get $1 back! FREE Oscar Mayer! AND, Oscar Mayer is part of the Kraft/P&G Catalina this week at Jewel too…

Find another great deal with the YourBucks Catalina promotion? Post it in the comments below!
There are a bunch of coupons in the middle of the Thursday Jewel flyer for “Buy [products], get free dozen eggs.” Frankly, none of these are good buys. If you need eggs, you’re better off just -buying- them. But if you stocked up within the past few weeks when eggs were .29… you’ve probably still got a fridge-shelf full of them. As I do. Moving along…

Deals continuing from previous weeks:
Jewel’s house brand of diapers, Baby Basics, are $7.99 a pack. Print this $4 coupon, and then print another $4 coupon at www.babybasicsclub.com! These will cut the price in half to $3.99 a pack!
Also, look for Baby Basics diapers on clearance. Some stores have the large cardboard cases of diapers marked down to $9.99 for a packaging change — they’ve switched from the rectangular-sized boxes to a more square-shaped box. (Check at the price scanner, as these are often unmarked and can vary store to store.) With coupon, they’re just $5.99… for 80 diapers? A STEAL!
If you’re a fan of Jewel’s Wild Harvest line of organics, here’s your chance to take some home cheap or FREE! Print this $1 off any Wild Harvest coupon and look around the store — there are MANY Wild Harvest products that sell for $1, or close to it — crackers, cookies, organic produce… even reusable shopping bags.
Jewel meat deals:
- Fresh chicken drumsticks, thighs, leg quarters or whole fryers are .99/lb.
- Jennie-O frozen hen or Tom turkeys are .99/lb.
- Perdue fresh turkey wings, drumsticks or necks are $1.49/lb
- Butterball hen or tom turkeys are $1.69/lb

- Perdue Fresh Cornish Hen twin packs are $1.99/lb.
- Fresh leg of lamb is $2.99/lb (yes, slightly over my usual benchmark for meats, but a VERY good price if you like it
- Jewel has a coupon in their ad for $8 off a spiral, shank or butt ham with a $30 purchase. The best way to use these coupons? Buy the SMALLEST or least expensive ham, and you can usually come close to getting it free. Without coupons, the shank hams are $1.49/lb., JEwel fresh spiral sliced $2.19/lb., and Hormel fresh spiral sliced $2.49/lb.
(Anytime meat is under $1.99 a pound (no matter what it is — beef, pork, poultry, or seafood) it’s a buy in my book, because $1.99 is a cycle low and a good benchmark for meat prices.)

Over at Dominick’s, their $25/$10 frozen food Catalina continues, as well as several good instant-savings deals…
Note to my Safeway shoppers reading from outside Chicagoland: In Chicago, Dominick’s currently accepts expired coupons up to one year past the expiration date, so my coupon matchups for Dominick’s deals will include expired coupons. If an expired coupon matchup is provided, it will be noted with (exp) after the date. Also, in Chicago, Dominick’s does not double coupons (as other Safeway stores do) – if your store doubles, you’ll do even better with many of these deals.

What does “minimum $10 (or $20) purchase required” mean? To use store coupons that include a minimum purchase requirement, you must spend a minimum dollar amount on that shopping trip. You will reach the minimum purchase amount based upon total purchases after your Club Card discount is applied. For example, the regular retail price of a box of Cheerios (after Club Card discounts) will count toward the minimum purchase required in order to use the Cheerios coupon.
Heading over to Meijer, here are your best deals of the week for Meijer stores in in Algonquin, Aurora, Bloomingdale, Bolingbrook, Elgin, McHenry, Oswego, Plainfield, Rolling Meadows, and St. Charles:
What a light week at Meijer. The free milk Catalina deal is running at Meijer this week too (see Jewel deals above) but at $2 a box here for the Kellogg’s, you’re much better off doing the deal at Jewel.
Here are a few quickie deals…
1 lb. packages of Meijer butter are $1.79.
64oz. bottles of Meijer apple juice are 3-for-$5, or $1.67 each.
(Told you there wasn’t much..!)
Meijer meat deals:
- Center cut half boneless pork loin is $1.49/lb.
- Ground beef chuck is $1.79/lb
Meijer produce deals:
- Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Gala, Granny Smith, Fuji, Braeburn or Jonagold applesa re .99/lb. ORGANIC are $1.29lb! GREAT price for organic!

- 1lb. packages of strawberries are 3-for$5 – another excellent price
- 10lb. bags of russet potatoes are $1.79 – SUPER CHEAP!
- Tomatoes on the vine are $1.99/lb.
Note that Meijers in other states are on different schedules. The Illinois Meijers are about a week behind on the sales vs. Indiana/Michigan. If you’re in Illinois, these Meijer deals run through Wednesday. If you’re reading from another state, they ENDED Saturday at your store… Confusing? Yes.
AND, if you shop at the Illinois NILES Meijer location, they haven’t been following the same sale flyer as the other Illinois Meijers, under the convoluted reasoning that because the store is new, people will shop there -without- as many products being on sale. O-kay.
For my Rockford-area shoppers (and Kroger shoppers too!) Hilander really has some great sales going on this week…

Over at Kmart, their high-value Catalina deal involving numerous cleaning and paper products continues…
Kmart is running a “Spend $20, get $5 OR Spend $30, get $10 Catatalina deal.
What’s interesting about this sale is that the ad states “Offer is good on ANY size, scent or variety of these featured brands,” and then goes on to list the brands, noting that there are over 165 included items. No worrying about UPC lists or spreadsheets here! Here are your matchups. (Note that the ad features VERY few prices – I’ve noted them here. If you come up with a good scenario, please feel free to post and share it!) Angel Soft – $5.49 for 12 double or 24 regular rolls Brawny Coast Dial – $3.50 for 8 bar soap, body wash or body wash refill Dixie Purex – $4 for 72oz. liquid, $5 for 3-in-1 Quilted Northern 12-roll – $7.49 Renuzit – $1 for Adjustables, $2.79 for Pearl Scents Right Guard – $2.50 deodorant Soft Scrub Sparkle – $5.49 for 8-roll pack Tone – $3.50 for 6-bar soap Vanity Fair Zout |
So how did this deal get better? With this $10 off a $20 purchase coupon! OH yes. This one’s so hot it might set your printer on fire! Let’s work this into the current Catalina deal with an easy scenario…
Buy 5 Northern 12-roll toilet paper packs ($7.49 each) = $37.45
Use the 10.00 coupon. Pay 27.45 and receive a 10.00 Catalina. That’s $17.45 for 60 rolls of toilet paper – about .29 a roll. And, if you’re a rebater, send in for this $5 rebate – that will knock it down to about $12 for all of that, including the stamp…
UPDATE: Kmart has already pulled this coupon due to “abuse.” I’m getting really tired of companies making amazing offers available to shoppers, then crying “abuse” when people follow through and use them…
Kmart’s Super Double Coupons event is scheduled to return 4/4-4/10! More on that next week, but this is a FUN event for Chicagoans, as we have NO double coupon promotions in our immediate area other than this. And, this Catalina sale runs through 4/12/10! So we’ll have some overlap between the Catalina and the double coupons early next month.

As always, these deals are guidelines for shopping. I can make no guarantee that these items will be on sale, in stock, or available at your area store. I can also not guarantee your Catalinas will print, your cashier will smile at you while you check out, or that your shopping cart won’t have a broken wheel. But I CAN teach you how to save money :)
And, also, as always, a huge thanks to the many readers who posted and emailed deals that made it into today’s Deals of the Week! We’re all in this together, and I sincerely appreciate everyone who spots and passes along good deals that we can all enjoy :) Thank you… to YOU!
* (All You magazine is not a requirement for using the site, but if you like coupons, you will probably really enjoy it. It’s a cheap ($2.49 an issue) magazine that is absolutely filled with coupons each month — typically $50-$100 worth per issue! You can subscribe to All You online and save about $10/year off the cover price. And depending on the values, if you use 2 or 3 coupons alone from each issue, you’ve recouped the cost of the magazine, and you’re on your way to even bigger savings.)

Jill, of the products included in this deal, which, if any do you feel are a good deal at .91? I haven’t sensed much excitement about this particular promotion as it seems there are few coupon matchups and some of the items seem expensive at .91.

I’m confused about the math in the scenario…If I have 4 printables for $1/2 or $1.50/2 wouldn’t I have to buy 8 boxes? And then with the .70 off one, would that bring me to 9? It’s late, I must not be thinking straight!!
DiamondCass says
And here I thought you said you were behind on your deal-writing this week… and still had deals up by 11:30.
Thanks for all your hard work, as always :)

Wild Harvest Shopping Bags are also on the 10/10 11th free ( printables are listed somewhere on here ) At CL Jewel they were rining up at .99 so not kicking out the 11th free item, Went back today found the sign today and CS employee gave me my $1. back . Hubby asked if I was really driving from MCH to CL for a buck , to which I replied” a buck that’s 5 boxes of cereal, you’re crazy if you think I WON”T go back ….. LOL LOL LOL HA HA HA He really likes to tease me …….

When I click on the link for the 1.50/2 Frosted Flakes coupon, the Frosted mini-wheats coupon comes up. Is it just me? We sure love our Frosted Flakes, so any help would be appreciated. =)

I went to coffee-mate.com and got 75 cents off 1 coupon. You can print two!
So if you just bought two, it would be 50 cents oop, with 75 cents back! What a steal!
HeatherPate says
Jewel butter is part of your bucks as well, buy 2 at $1.77 each, get $1 back. $2.54 for 2lbs of butter is not a bad deal!
All this butter, sugar and chocolate chips…I see cookies in my future ;-)

Went to Jewel yesterday to pick up my free milk since we were in need & thought I would do the easy deal needed a lot of things included in it. And in the end found out that u have to spend $20 AFTER coupons!! Yap there computer system now recognizes the SPECIFIC coupon taken off for those items included it doesn’t just say manufacturer coupon on your receipt anymore! Anyone else encounter this?? Kinda stinks for us!

For the Kellogg’s/milk deal at Jewel…do you buy the milk at the same time as the cereal? Or do you buy the cereal and then a ‘voucher’ for the milk prints? Thanks for any responses :) And Jill–you have made it even more possible for me to stay home with my son, instead of returning to work, now that we’ve cut food costs–THANK YOU!

On the same site as the Suave deodorant Q (https://www.dontfretthesweat.com/coupons) are Dove Qs.
The first is the Dove Ultimate Sensitive and right below that are the Dove Ultimate Go Fresh — Buy 2 get $3 off. That would meet 2 of the Buy 3 requirement AND take an addition $3 off!
shlee says
At Dominick’s, buy 4 or more and they are 59 cents each. Then the 3/27 SS has a page advertising that if you buy 2, get 3 free! So if you buy 5, you only have to pay for 2, which makes it 24 cents each, even less if you have any coupons! I did the deal yesterday and the “get 3 free” didn’t come off, so I showed the manager the insert ad and he gave me back $1.77. The fudge brownies are delicious, especially if you chop up a bunch of hershey kisses and throw them in the batter :)
shlee says
Dulcolax stool softener is $10- $10rr. Add the $3 off Q in 12/13 SS and it’s a MM. You could even add the Free Bottled water Q wyb Dulcolax from 3/7SS and get free water with this deal. Also Simply Saline is $7-$7rr. Add the $1Q from 1/24SS or 11?15SS and it’s a MM.

I’m sure this is a silly question but are they three individual coupons for a gallon of milk or is it one coupon for three gallons of milk?
My husband is the only one that drinks milk so it will make a difference as to how many I get at one time.

Ck out this website free $4.00 airwick coupons use the coupon at walgreens and then you get a free airwick

kh8180 says
Just an FYI to some – our Walgreen’s will only limit one coupon per item, so if I am doing an individual deal, I have to purchase 2 items. They tell me it is the cash register that will not allow the transaction even though I give them the in store coupon first.
bigmoney says
The coupons.com Q seems to have been pulled. Shame on me for sleeping in (kids at grandma’s)today! Also, I tried later to link to coupons.com through an email newsletter, and the site won’t load. Think all the new traffic is crashing it!

I thought I read last night that you would later have some scenarios on the Jewel $30/$5 P&G cats. But now I don’t see any scenarios OR the comment that you’d be back later on Monday with some. Anyone see any?

At Jewel, the new 4-packs of Dannon Light & Fit yogurt on sale for $2. There was a .60 off coupon in one of the recent inserts (sorry, I’m not sure which one). I had 2 coupons. So, I bought two 4-packs (total of 8 yogurts) for $4, used both of my .60 off coupons, and got $1 YourBucks back. 8 yogurts for about .23 each is a pretty good deal.
I also had 2 printable coupons from the Coffeemate website for .75 off 1 creamer. I bought 2 to get the .75 Yourbucks back. I bought a peppermint mocha and an original, but when I got home, I realized the Original rang up at the regular price of 2.39. Maybe only the flavored creamers are on sale for $1?
maggie says
I have a lot of cats to use up, do you think I could use them towards the purchase of a Jewel giftcard?? That would be great, it would eat up a lot of cats that expire in the next couple of days! TIA.

I noticed that you have info posted about the dove haircare at walgreens and the coupon in the 3/28 RP….I dont have any dove cpns in my RP insert. I didnt have any Betty Crocker Warm Delights in my 3/28 SS either.
Do the inserts vary from area to area? I am in NW Indiana (Chicagoland) and thought they were all the same.

I’ll be donating some of the cereal to the food pantry (along with bologna/salami if they’ll take it).
I really don’t mean to start an argument or anything, but we really have to count our blessings when so many people are hurting right now.
Do you have a family member, maybe an elderly one, that needs help with groceries? Then you can ‘use up’ your catalinas and give the groceries to him/her. :)

I don’t know if this is just the regular price? Campbell’s cooking soups were 5/$3.00 at Jewel.
I used 2 $1/2 coupons that I printed a week or so ago.
Bought 4 soups for $2.40 less $2 = .40 for 4 soups….10 cents each

I know, I know.. not usually a great buy but the deal is buy two 20 oz. coke products and get 2 mars candy bars free… I just happened to have 6 my coke rewards coupons for free 20 oz coke products.. so, free snacks for a while for us :o)
I just wanted to mention this in case someone else had these coupons and wanted to make the best use of them… of course, the sodas being BOGO would make it better, but this is almost as good with the candy bars.
ghostmom01 says
I’ve been told that the Register Rewards for the Dove products are no longer rolling. I haven’t tested it. Don’t use the RR you got from your 1st Dove purchase to buy more because you won’t get a new one.

Our local paper has gone to a weekend edition that comes out on Saturday now and very rarely includes any coupon inserts. I can’t get delivery of any other paper where I live, but I can buy the Chicago Trib and the Rockford paper at the local gas station on Sundays. Does anyone know if the Rockford paper includes the same coupon inserts as the Trib? I’m just deciding if it worth it to buy both or just a few of the Trib. Thanks!

Jill, I watched your Nightline and was also noticing how you bought “good food” and was quite sad that they didn’t show your cart vs. “the other guy.” But today, I went to Jewel and bought $140 worth of groceries and paid $60…just like you..I got 2 pineapples, 3 packs of strawberries, 2 cantaloupes, a ham, two packs of chicken breasts, diapers, and more…all “good food.” I think you did an awesome job on your shopping trip and you inspire me…you CAN get good food..for cheap! =)
ghostmom01 says
Instinct tells me that when an insert no longer has active coupons, I should throw, er, recycle it. But, because Dominicks still accepts expired coupons, I feel like I should hang onto them for at least 14mos.
– How do I know which inserts to keep and which ones to throw away?
– And, then, how do I find the coupons I need if they’re expired?

not sure if this was already in a comment but the price of the small box of frosted mini wheats at my jewel is 2.49, not 1.98. Just fyi.

In Dominick’s there is buy 2/ get 3 free on 12 pack Pepsi product ( reg. price 4.99 each ). There is also a mfr. coupon in new Caputo’s flyer $2 off 4 12packs. So you would get 5 for $8. But, tomorrow Jewel has Pepsi ( and Coke) on sale 4 12 packs for $8. So if you buy all Pepsi product you would get 4 for $6. This might be a good price if you need Pepsi.
HrKrupa says
In the post, Jill said she used the milk catalinas to “get discounts on ORGANIC milk, as the Catalina’s value is up to $4.19 off a gallon.” Does that mean you can buy milk that costs more that 4.19, and get 4.19 off the price of your milk? or is it only good for a gallon that costs less than 4.19? Also wondering if the coupon is good for 1/2 gallons, or the carton of 2 – 1/2 gallons of soy milk? We have milk allergies in my house and Jewel only sells 1/2 gallons of soy, not full gallons. Thanks.
