My week has been off to a running start! Thanks for your patience in waiting for this Deals list — it’s one of the longest I’ve had in quite some time, and with my ABC news appearances today, it took longer than normal to write these up! :)
Now, let’s start with a CRAZY week of deals at Jewel!
Did you see the Jewel flyer this week? Their big “Spend $30, get $15 back” in Catalina coupons sale is GREAT!
Now, we have a LOT of new readers today, so welcome to everyone! If you’re new at this, what a week to jump in and get started..! There’s a lot going on with this deal, and I’ll try to break it down as simply as possible.
First, there are a lot of coupons to match up to this deal, and you definitely want to use coupons, because the deal works on your dollar total BEFORE coupons! Whew! So, to do this deal, figure out what you want to buy. Some of the items in this sale are good deals even without coupons ($1 cake mixes, for example.)
But are you really ready to have some fun? For my advanced couponers who have been with me for a while (or new ones who don’t mind taking a chance on saving even more money!) here’s the best part of this $15/$30 Jewel deal…
As many of you will remember from past deals, sometimes these Catalina deals (where you get Catalina coupons for your next purchase) work on the Preferred card prices, and others work on the non-Preferred card prices. Usually, the ad will say whether or not you need to use your Preferred card to reach the $30.
Now, with this deal… the OSCO products are operating on the Preferred price. So any shampoos, lotions, or personal care items you might buy will be working on the sale prices.
The JEWEL products (food) are operating on the non-Preferred price. So if an item is $2.69 on the shelf, but it’s on sale for $1, the $2.69 is what you’re counting to get to $30. You will still use your Preferred card for this deal, but you will be adding the non-Preferred prices to get to $30.
Why do we do this? When a Catalina deal is figured on the regular prices, we often need to buy less items to reach that $30 mark. And this is one of those deals.
If you’ve never done a Catalina deal, PLEASE read this article before you start, paying particular attention to the “What do I do if a Catalina doesn’t print?” section.
If you choose to work this deal off shelf prices and for some reason it does not print the three $5 Catalina coupons at the end of your transaction, you will have no recourse to go back to the service counter and ask for it. These deals are best thought of as the “slot machines” of couponing… and yet, when they work, they are beautiful. (If you want to see a fantastic Catalina deal in action, be sure to catch my upcoming ABC appearance on Thursday morning, where I go shopping with anchor Judy Hsu. So many Catalinas printed that I was afraid the machine would run out of paper!)
Anyway, understand that you’re taking a small chance when you do these deals… but they do pay off big. And unlike a slot machine, you will win more often than you’ll lose.
Want an example of what you can do?
5 bottles of All Laundry Detergent – $16.67
Minus 2 $1.00 printables
Minus $1.00 off 2 coupon
Paid: $13.67… and got $15 back in Catalinas.
5 half-gallons of Breyers ice cream (well, technically they’re not exactly a half-gallon anymore, but you get the idea…) also $16.67
Minus .50 off coupon
Paid: $16.17… and got $15 back in Catalinas.
15 boxes of Betty Crocker cake mix
Without any coupons – paid $15 and got $15 back in Catalinas.
14 boxes of Green Giant vegetables – $14.00
Minus 2 .50 coupons
Paid $13… and got $15 back in Catalinas.
And you don’t have to buy all the same thing – but those are good examples of what you CAN do! Mix and match, but make sure you’re over $30 on the regular price for Jewel products, and the Preferred price for Osco products.
Other notes… while the ad says you can do this deal “Once per transaction,” you can actually do it twice in the same transaction ($60 worth of prices gains you $30 in Catalinas.) But don’t go for $90 worth and hope for $45 back – it doesn’t work that way, and you’ll get just $30. Again, if you are at all uncomfortable doing these deals “off ad,” stick to one transaction of $30 value.
Also, make sure you read all the comments under the deals – people are posting what works for them, what doesn’t — and while I was busy working on the TV spot this morning, a bunch of people were already working on the deal too! There’s a lot of good information being posted, so look through that if you like these kinds of deals.
And the very best part of Catalina deals? “Rolling” the Catalina coupons to the next deal. After you do your deal and get $15 back in Catalinas, use that $15 to buy your next group of items… and get $15 MORE in Catalinas!
And again, if you are NEW at couponing, you may not want to take this extra little “leap of faith” in working the deal this way. If you buy $30 of sale priced items in the ad, you will still get your $15 back, saving half your money. Remember, if for some reason your Catalinas don’t print, you will have no real recourse other than to return the items for a refund.
This deal runs through Saturday, Nov. 8. Additionally, some Jewel locations are also running a Holiday Bucks promotion. For each $25 you spend, you’ll get a $1 Holiday Buck Catalina, up to 4 per transaction. This is over and above the $15 in Catalinas you’ll get from the deal too! With both of these Catalinas, remember to WAIT at the register for the Catalina coupons to print! They print v-e-r-y s-l-o-w at the end of the transaction, a few seconds after the receipt prints. Don’t leave without your free money :)
Moving over to Walgreens, how about two free packs of gum? (Hey, these are tiny freebies, but they ARE free!) There’s a coupon for Buy One, Get One Free Wrigley’s gum in the Walgreens flyer for this week. Combine that with the B1G1F coupon from 10/5 SS, and you will buy none and get 2 free!
Still at Walgreens, Glade air freshener sprays are pretty cheap… they’re on sale for $1. Use the $1.00 off 2 coupon from 11/2 SS and pick these up for just 50 cents each!
Over at CVS, you’ll want to grab free Crest toothpaste… and not only is it free, it’s a moneymaker too! Moneymakers, as many of you know, are my favorite kinds of deals… because the store pays YOU to shop! Crest Pro Health toothpaste is on sale for $3.49. When you buy it, an Extra Care Buck coupon good for $3.49 off your next purchase will print… so you’re getting your money right back, and your toothpaste is free. Now, use the $1 coupon from 10/12 PG, and you’ll pay $2.49 for your toothpaste … and get $3.49 back! They’ll pay you $1 to take home free toothpaste!
It’s worth noting that now that Halloween is done, candy and Halloween stuff is CHEAP at almost all our area stores! Our Walgreens has their candy 75% off, and we’ll see lots of stores doing the same thing as they clear stuff off the shelves. It’s a great time to buy Halloween stuff for next year…
Lastly, it’s Election Day! If you haven’t already, get out there and VOTE! Not only will you be taking part in an incredibly important election, you’ll be exercising one of our most important rights as Americans… and guess what else… you’ll get free stuff! Check out all these restaurants offering freebies to people who vote today:
Free coffee at Starbucks
Free red, white and blue star-shaped donut at Krispy Kreme
Free ice cream at Ben & Jerry’s
So vote, vote, vote! :)

We walked into Jewel tonight with $20 in Walgreens cats and a boat load of coupons, insert and internet match ups. Used our $20 Wags cats, and spent $17.09 OOP, (Out of pocket). We came home with $270.50 worth of groceries and $60.00 in Jewel OYNO (off your next order) cats. So they paid us $22.91 to take away the groceries. None of it was from the Osco side, all of it was edible. Oh, except the All Laundry detergent. Thank goodness. It looked like we were going to be dining on toothpaste and gnawing on tooth brushes come winter;) Actually a lot of what we bought will be donated to the “Adopt A Family” program at our church. The drive to Woodridge for SC1 back in September was the best car trip we ever made. Thanks Again for making us better shoppers. If I get to Indiana and find those “Miller beer post its” I will offer them here.

Hi Jill,
Thanks for the great tips..AGAIN! After all my coupons, my total at Jewel came to $27.58 and I received $30 in Catalinas! I purchased:
5 All (each with $1.00 off coupon)
2 Macaroni Grill meals (each with $1.00 off)
2 Skippy peanut butter (.75 off 2)
2 Country Crock Side Dishes (each with $1.25 off)
1 Breyer’s Ice Cream (.50 off)
That’s a lot of items to bring home AND have Jewel pay me for it! I have 2 kids (and 1 is a high school football player) so I can sure use the laundry detergent!
Thanks again for helping me make money on things I would have bought anyway!

The All coupon won’t print nor will the 2nd Progresso soup coupon!

I purchased 12 cans of the 6 for 10 Progresso soup this morning at the Wauconda Jewel. First scanning all items to make sure it = over $30 (32.04, was the total without tax). Then I scanned my preferred card and coupons. Total was $12.85, but no catalinas printed. I was told at the service desk that pricing towards the $30 was based on the preferred pricing not the shelf price. Plus I had coupons so they said my total of $12.85 would not produce the catalinas. I told them that the offer was off the shelf price and should not include coupons, but they would not budge. Ugh. So beware of the Wauconda Jewel!

Jill, Just wanted to say thanks for all the time and effort you put into this then pass on to the rest of us! I have been saving so much $$$ these last couple of months on groceries and am able to get ahead on bills that need to be paid. THANKS SO MUCH, this really makes a difference to me!
q-pon says
I see that the Jewel ad that was posted only specifies certain stores. My local Jewel is not on the list. Do you think the Catalina’s may still print if I purchase the specified products?

As always – Thanks for all the work you do in compiling these deals!
CVS – bought two Crest toothpaste, used two $1 off coupons. Paid $5.47 for the two tubes, got $6.98 back : )
Walgreens – did the free gum – twice!
Jewel – with my combination of deals, I ended up with a gross total of $93.83. After preferred savings and coupons, I ended up paying $29.12 and then got $30.00 in coupons toward future purchases : ) ::does happy coupon dance:: (and I also charged the $29.12 so I get my 3% cash back!)
Now, do you have any deals on shelving units because I’m running out of cabinet space!?!

Just wanted to say thank you for posting the deal on All and cake mix. I now have a stash of those items to last me for months!

Ok, so I am fairly new to this whole couponing thing, but I know this is a good one…
Meijer has frozen Green Giant Steamers Vegetables on sale for 3/$4.00, there is a $1.00 off coupon at http://www.coupons.com for Green Giant Steamers, print two of those and there was also a $1.00 coupon in the paper two weeks ago. $1.00 for 3 bags of frozen veggies… If you have access to mulitple computers you can print multiple $1.00 off coupons (which is what I did).
Also at Meijer… Bagelfuls are on sale for $1.85 a box, there is a $1.00 off coupon at http://www.coupons.com, print two of these and you can get two boxes for $1.70. I also printed multiples of these and bought a good amount to stock the freezer.
When I checked out I got a catalina for $10 off my next shopping order of $30 or more.
For someone who NEVER used coupons before, I am totaling digging getting a ton of groceries for a little money… Thanks Jill for all you do!!! YOU ROCK!!!
aline0578 says

Just wanted to say thanks for all the awesome coupon deals that I’ve been getting at Jewel today! I’m stocking up my shelves and am also planning to share the wealth with the Grafton Township Pantry. This has been great and I still have $15.00 in Catalina’s to get more stuff, and more catalinas and so on and so on. Also, while couponing today my sister and I also ran into another fan of yours – she spotted us and asked if we were following your tips. I guess super-couponers are easy to spot! Thanks again.
Beth says
I just finished putting away the freezer and fridge items from my trips to Jewel today and I’m so excited I had to share. I did the deal 6 times. I came home with just over $190 in food and Jewel paid me a little over a dollar to do it! Thanks so much Jill!!
I did have one problem with the boxed veggies…the ad says selected varieties, but I couldn’t find a way to tell which ones were included. They were all $1 a box. I talked to the customer service rep. She didn’t know which ones were included either, but decided to give me 15 $1 coupons to make up for the missing catalinas. That was very nice of her, since I probably didn’t have the right kind to make the deal work! I’m going back later in the week for a few more things, then I’m off to the food pantry on Saturday!!
Does anyone know which Klondike bars work in this offer. Is it only the original, or can we try some of the other kinds? Thanks
bluesky says
I tried to do this deal with Progresso soups (the ones marked Traditional) and broth. I based it on the regular price (6/$16 and bought 12) but the catalinas did not print. Has anyone else had trouble with soups?

Jill we have done this deal so many times and are taking alot of it to the pantry. Here is something you might not know. If the $5 coupons from your last order dont scan, do not let the cashier just enter -$5.00 “Grocery” savings. Then this actually takes $5 off your total spent and then they do it to $15 and BAD: the register doesnt see you bought $30 worth of stuff. Its a mess. Finally our cashier figured this out. They need to enter the $5 coupon’s number code and hit “OT” over ride to make it all work.
After this I think we are just gonna hang on to our $5 coupons and keep shopping the deal and use them later because I dont want to risk antoher cashier ringing them as -$5 Grocery and then we lose the next set of coupons. She said too that they were supposed to get some other thing to scan when these dont scan from the store but she didnt have that.
Your site is great. But dont want anyone to lose out on any deals as we lost an order last night because of this thing with the cash register and the couposn.

So I went to the Jewel last night, came home and showed my husband the savings, he looked at me like I was insane, but thats ok since my “total savings” was $94.75 AND I got $30 back in Catalinas AND $4 in Holidays Bucks. So I think I will go back and buy the Spiral Ham with the Free Turkey when they get them in later this week and hopfully the ham will be free too with my $30 in catalinas. Seriously add couponing to the top of my list of addictions, Coupons, cookies and babies, Woo! Jill Thanks again for getting the motivation on!
regis says
Sorry….very new to this. I noticed postings about shelf price vs sale price and that you need to use the shelf price to hit your $30, but you need your preferred card to get the $15 catalinas back, if I use my card won’t I automatically be getting the sale price? I haven’t gone to Jewel yet, still getting my coupons in order and I’m not sure what price to use when I’m keeping the running total in my head….Sorry if this question bothers the veteran couponers here!
Christi225150 says
How many times can you keep rolling the catalina coupons? I bought 5 of the All detergent and spent around $16 and got the $15 coupons. Can I just keep going, paying with the catalinas and a few dollars over and over?

Ive been having a blast working these deals! My kids are excited for their ice cream and snacks, my hubby loves seeing our pantry filled up while not impacting our finances hardly at all, and I feel like a superhero! I even brought my mom with me today and I taught her how to add up her deals correctly!
The cashiers were great too, very patient and well informed on how to enter the Cats and do multiple transactions. I preferred using the cashier, as the self checker wont let you pay with the cats without assistance, and its easier for me to pay closer attention when I have a bagger and cashier helping!
I am forever grateful to Jewel, Jill and the manufacturer for this deal.
apriljake30 says
Would this be a Jewel (shelf price)or Osco (sale price) item?
Technically, its food, but its sold in the Osco part of the store.
Has anyone used these in their deals yet?
Thanks!

I went to Jewel today to get all my deals…took my a good 2 hours last night to print coupons online, clip coupons from the inserts and lay out my plan of attack! lol. I did 4 transactions of the spend 30 get 15 cats back. ended up getting back a total of 70.00 in cats (also did the spend 15 on the home life products get 5 back in cats)…just keep rolling them over on each transaction. When all was said and done with the cats and the coupons I had and the preferred card sales I got 485.00 worth of groceries and only spent 116.00 out of pocket!!! I had 2 carts full of groceries and you couldn’t see my son in the cart, he was surrounded by chips!

Wow! What a shopping day this has been. I’m definitely going to need SC3 after this!
It all started Monday with a run to Jewel for 17 Knorr Nodles & Rice. Total paid, $17.00. Received 3/$5.00 Catalina’s.
Then it all started to snowball today and got totally out of control! After work this afternoon I ran into WG for “just a few things”. 4 Dawn dish soap, 8 packs of gum, 6 Glade glass scents, 1 Glade Flameless Candle. Total $45.31 less $33.76 savings OPP $11.55 and a $3.00 rebate at end of month on the candle.
Then it was off to Jewel, where I ran into a woman who was selling Sun-Times subscriptions and saw my “Jill” list in my hand. She is a newbie and very excited to get going on these deals. After we sang Jills praises for a few, I quickly went through the store and priced out all the items I wanted to purchase today. I returned to my car for about 15 minutes to figure out shelf price vs quantity in order to receive the 3 Catalina’s. I returned to the store to buy:
13 boxes of frozen veggies, 2 bottles of pop. Total $33.97 – Used 2 Catalina’s OPP $2.96 plus I received 3 more Catalina’s.
Off to Meijer for 88 cent eggs, 50 cent Imperial, 2 Bagelfuls (as another SC member suggested), 2 Pizza snacks and 13 bags of Green Giant Steamers. Total $38.58 OPP $13.28 and received a $10 Catalina.
After getting the kids dinner, it was back to my local WG where I purchased 4 packs of gum for 4 cents. Both my girls did this also and were thrilled to get their deals like Mommy does! 12 packs for 12cents! (After all your gum has been rung, give the cashier your B1G1 coupons, then the WG coupon.)
Then off to my neighborhood Jewel for deals that went like this:
All detergent, 5/$31.67 OPP $1.09 Used 3 Catalina’s and got 3 back.
Then it was 9 cookie mixes, 3 frosting. Total $30.55 OPP $4.45 used 2 Catalina’s and got 3 more back!
Then, 5 Country Crock, 2 GoGurts. Total $30.96 OPP $4.71 used 2 Catalina’s got 3 more back.
And again, 15 more veggies, Total $35.10 OPP $1.11 used 2 Catalina’s got 3 back.
Now I have quite a few things to share with the food pantry, plus $60.00 in Catalina’s. Now tomorrow, I will do it all again, with everything going to the pantry. The more I bought, the more Catalina’s I ended up with. It was turning into a vicous cycle! I’m going to get as many as I can, and donate turkeys and Catalina’s to the pantry this year for Thanksgiving. All because of you Jill. Thank you so much! This was so much fun today – thank you thank you thank you!
Total breakdown for today: 83% savings.
Total before coupons and preferred card: $265.39
Total catalina’s used: $55.00
Total OPP: $44.61
Catalina’s still on hand for pantry shopping $60.00!
And I can make that $60.00 go a LONG way, and come back to me two fold. SC3 quick! I’m going to need it by Saturday!!!!
I did have a problem with the Cats printing on three of the transactions today but the fantastic Jewel employees stepped right up and took care of it. With one of the veggie deals I miscalculated the total and the manager actually let me purchase one more in a seperate transaction, and she manually printed my cats instead of returning everything and starting over. The cashier at my local Jewel gets really excited when he sees how little I pay for so much. The manager even came over to make sure the rest of my orders rang properly and I got all my cats. Thanks to the Jewel staff for their help too!

This is addictive!
Just wondering which Jewel was so accomodating?

Jewel is now saying that this is only one transaction per customer. I tried getting more items last night (I had purchased detergent earlier in the day and it worked like a charm), and when my Catalina coupons didn’t print I asked the front desk and she informed that this is a one transaction per customer deal.. She ended up giving me the 15 in Catalina’s anyway.
I’m going to go to a different Jewel today and see what happens.

Hi all,
Does anyone know where I can find the policy or the “rules” on this week’s sale at Jewel. My cats are not printing out and I’ve made sure I have over $30 shelf price, scanned the card, then the coupons.I ‘ve heard a number of reasons from Jewel personnel who either tell me it’s only 1 transaction period, not even per day, or it has to be $30 sale price, you can’t roll the Catalina’s over… I’d really just like to be able to show them the information instead of trying to explain the entire process to them over and over again. thanks.

Well, just was accused of lying and stealing at the Jewel/Huntley! I had completed 2, Buy $30 get $15cats, transactions in the self check aisle and all was going beautifully! When I attempted the 3rd transaction using the BC cake mixes, no CATS produced! Instead of bothering the ‘self check’ clerk with the problem, I went straight to the CS counter to report the problem. The clerk behind the desk went over to the machine, pulled out 11 CATS out of the machine(saying they were all from me?!) and claimed that I had rec’d the CATS – and already used them to pay for my 15 BC cake mixes! I assured her that the system does not print out these CATS until you pay for the items, but she’d hear nothing of it!!! I then insisted she refund me my .26 cents and the 3 CATS I had used to pay for the last transaction and told her I’d be going to another Jewel. I got the impression she didn’t believe me (about the CATS not printing til the payment is made) and seemed ‘steamed’ when I walked away. She didn’t even want to give me back my .26 cents!!!!
In the end, I see my mistake was not reporting the problem to the self check clerk immediately (to have her on my side). I do want to say that my heart goes out to all these Jewel clerks and managers that are having a ‘week from hell’ with all of these problems.
Also, I’m suspicious of the ‘German Chocolate Cake Mix’ not being included in the sale?! What do you all think?

Shoppers Beware:
DO NOT do the $60.00 order trick. It will produce the 6-$5.00 coupons, however they won’t let you use more than 3-$5.00 in one transaction, per corporate. I had to pay $15 more cash than I wanted to on my first order ’cause of it. The next orders I ended up doing 2-$30.00 ones, so that I can use the 3-$5.00 tickets. Had no problems yesterday doing it, today “new rules”. Just thought I’d share this info. if you shop the Woodstock store. Also, had to remind them about the “override” vs “grocery” concept. Employees were WONDERFUL! They suggested meds. for me next time, if I do it again. They got me hipper on the first order with the 3 only allowed deal. We had lots of laughs and giggles today.
Also: Out of most of the boxed frozen vegs…only got 9…and was only able to get the mixed vegs with cheese sause. Rest pretty bare shelves. Have a back-up plan if going today.

I just came back from the jewel in west dundee on rt. 72 and the cashier told me that they fixed the problem, that now you have to buy 30.00 worth of stuff after the prefered card discounts so I didn’t buy anything.

Did it yesterday, and used 6. No problem either. Today, new story…no dice, different employees. I told her that it didn’t say that on the CATS. She pulled out corp. packet, it was all highlighted. I didn’t see anything on there about limit either. Her “stand” was that the ad says “$15.00 for your next visit”. So, she said corp. told them only $15 worth could be used at once. She was already thinking I needed meds with all the hassles to start with. [Joking of course.] I let it go this time, but told her I would contact Jewel since it wasn’t a problem yesterday, and today it’s a “new rule”. I did get my 6 new ones, then I split up the next order into $30 ones. It actually made the lady “work” more [she had to scan 2 orders of CATS, instead of just the one]. Out of my 3 orders, only one “holiday bonus” printed. First order over $60, other 3 over $30. Same with my in-laws orders…only one printed with their 3 orders.
Want to do this deal more time tomorrow with a single friend that is struggling now. New job, just moved to her own apartment, and college debits..and car payment. This should help her out by stocking her cabnets. I’ll loan her a few to start with to make the first order even less for her.

The jewel deal was great, i love this type off stuff. My wife turned me on to you, and now she thinks Im obsessed. On another note i went to the target in Schamburg off of meacham road to buy 21 buddies soaps, went to the register with my soap and 21 coupons for $1.00 off (i have friends and family print them for me as well) the clerk told me i could not use the coupons from the internet. I told her her they state they are Mfg coupons, she finally called one of the managers over she told me they will not accept them i asked why, she gaveme the same answer, i told her it states that they are MFG coupns and they actually get more $$ when they send them in as stated on the coupon, she grabbed my coupons and told me she would check on it, after she returned from her office she said she would take them. As she started scanning them the computer would not take them and told me they could not accept them. The reason she gave me was that since the soaps were .99 and the coupon was for 1.00 the computer would not allow them for a negative balance. After arguing with her for 10 minutes i grabed my coupons and left, never to return to that Target again. Does anyone havea solution for this??
thanks

I missed getting my $15 today but my pre perferred total was $36. A couple of things I haven’t read about that I bought is – pop tarts? Progressive Clam Chowder? or Brownie Mix? Anybody know about these?

Thanks for the Jewel info Jill. Went there over 2 days, did 3 $60 deals, used my cats from each previous visit to pay for each following deal, all with no problems. For those that seem to have issues with the soup, look closely and make sure you’re getting the Traditional. All told I purchased $270 worth of groceries, including items not on the list but too good to pass up like whole chicken for .79/lb and diapers, and actually made about $3 on the whole deal. Unbelievable. Thanks again.

I did great at Jewel this weekend. I don’t think I have had so much fun grocery shopping in a long time. I did about 6 transactions, over the course of 3 days. I had to return one set of items, but my Jewel has the nicest CS on the evening shift. I am so happy that my friend told me about your website. I tell everyone I know about you. THANK YOU!!
