Hello, Super-Couponers! A big welcome to all of our new readers from my Midlothian and Crystal Lake classes this past week.
Sunday’s newspaper contained two inserts: A SmartSource (SS) and a RedPlum (RP.) The Parade magazine has some healthcare and medication coupons inside if you’d like to save that page of the magazine too. And, the SS insert also has a coupon for a FREE El Monterey frozen burrito inside! It has a very short date (expires 11/4) so don’t forget to use it before then. Free burritos for lunch, anyone?

If you’re new to my blog, take a quick minute to read Using this site and bring yourself up to speed on all the coupon terminology and abbreviations.
A note to my non-Midwest readers: While my weekly deals focus on some Chicagoland stores, the Kroger, Target, Walgreens and CVS deals apply nationally. And, if you’re shopping at a SuperValu or Safeway store you may find similar sales to our Jewel-Osco and Dominick’s deals. Welcome, and enjoy!
and the drugstore/general merchandise store deals run through Saturday.
“Deals of the Week” is written assuming you are using the inserts from the Chicago Tribune (or, if reading from outside Chicagoland, the largest newspaper serving your market area. That largest paper has the most, highest-value coupons. The content, coupons, and dollar amounts of the coupons in the RedPlum and SmartSource inserts differs by paper, so to coupon effectively, it’s best to subscribe to the paper that contains the highest-value coupons.)
They are now offering discount subscription codes for MULTIPLE newspapers to the same address! (Link opens in new window.)

Grocery Deals
Starting at Jewel-Osco… View weekly ad | Load SavingStar ecoupons | Load Jewel-Osco ecoupons
IMPORTANT JEWEL-OSCO NOTE: All Jewel locations have updated their cash registers to a new system. If you are using TWO coupons on a Buy One, Get One Free sale, the register is currently scanning the second coupon as $0.00. The register will not beep and you will have no way of knowing your coupon’s value did not get recognized unless you are watching closely. Jewel is working on a solution to this problem and I have a response from corporate here indicating that their two-coupons-on-a-B1G1F policy has NOT changed. Watch your registers.
ANOTHER IMPORTANT JEWEL-OSCO NOTE:Ecoupons you can currently use with the Jewel-Osco Rewards card are via SavingStar and Jewel-Osco’s new ecoupons. Note that the ecoupons you can load to card are often the same as the ones you can print at Coupons.com. If you print them, you get two prints, but if you load them, you only get ONE. Just an FYI.
LAST IMPORTANT JEWEL-OSCO NOTE: Jewel-Osco has gone to a one-page paper ad in the newspaper some weeks in some market areas, but the full Sunday ad is available online at www.jewelosco.com. This ad is valid at ALL stores, even if you did not receive the full ad in your local paper.
Jewel-Osco information:
Are you on the Jewel-Osco email list? At times, Jewel sends out coupons to match with their current sales, and often they’re store coupons that can be stacked with manufacturer coupons!
Let’s go to Dominick’s… View weekly ad | Load Dominick’s Just For U ecoupons and Deal Match offers
Note to Safeway shoppers reading from outside Chicagoland: In Chicago, Dominick’s does not double coupons (as other Safeway stores do) – if your store doubles, you’ll do even better with many of these deals. Also in Chicago, previously-available ecoupons (Cellfire, ShortCuts and PGEsaver) have been discontinued. Ecoupons are now available in the “Just For U / Coupon Center” section of electronic coupons available at Dominicks.com.
Heading over to Meijer, here are your best deals for Meijer stores in in Algonquin, Aurora, Bloomingdale, Bolingbrook, Elgin, McHenry, Oswego, Plainfield, Rolling Meadows, St. Charles, and the Indianapolis area:
View weekly ad | Load Meijer Mperks ecoupons
Note that Meijers in other states are on different schedules. The Illinois Meijers are about a week behind on the sales vs. most of Indiana/Michigan. If you’re in Illinois, these Meijer deals run through Wednesday. If you’re reading from another state, they ENDED Saturday at your store… Confusing? Yes.
AND, if you shop at the Illinois NILES or ORLAND Meijer locations, they typically haven’t been following the same sale flyer as the other Illinois Meijers.
Heading over to Kroger… View weekly ad | Load Kroger ecoupons | Load SavingStar ecoupons | Load Cellfire ecoupons | Load ShortCuts ecoupons | Load PGEsaver.com ecoupons
Jewel-Osco | Dominick’s (Safeway) | Meijer | Kroger | Target | Walgreens | CVS | Walmart | Free |
Here are your Hilander deals (also running at Logli and Schnucks)… View weekly ad | Load “Schnupons” ecoupons
The Rockford-area Logli stores share the same ad as Hilander (Schnucks) now, so these deals apply at the four Rockford-area Logli stores as well. The current ad is good through Tuesday, September 25th.
Off to Target…
View weekly ad | Print store coupons from Target.com …
Target Notes:
You get .05 off your total at Target for each reusable bag you bring and use. If you pay with the Target credit or debit card, you receive another 5% off.
Drugstore Deals
Heading to Walgreens (View weekly ad | On Fridays, preview next week’s ad)…
IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT THE WALGREENS AD: Walgreens is no longer putting its entire ad in the paper newspaper version. There are online-only ad pages that you can look at via this link: View weekly ad
And finally, over at CVS (View weekly ad) | Load SavingStar ecoupons
CVS Tips: Remember to always scan your CVS card at the Coupon Center scanner in the store — it prints bonus coupons for you! You may want to scan your coupon more than once – it’s been printing different coupons on subsequent scans!
And, if you haven’t already, make sure your CVS ExtraCare card is registered for the CVS Beauty Club before you do any deals involving beauty products. It gives you $5 in ExtraBucks for every $50 you spend on beauty products, and it is cumulative, meaning you don’t have to spend $50 in one trip. It keeps track for you and will automatically print EBs on your next visit to the store when you reach a $50 threshold.

Wrapping things up with Walmart…
Policies to know:
- Walmart will price match any competitor’s advertised price. Bring the other store’s flyers with you to the store. While the policy doesn’t require this, it does speed the price-matching along.
- With the new coupon policy, Walmart will also accept other store’s STORE coupons with an actual price listed on them. For example, a Dominick’s store coupon advertising “.99 Ragu Pasta Sauce” would be accepted. A Walgreens store coupon advertising “2/$1 Morton’s Salt” would be accepted. (A Target store coupon for “$2.50 off Huggies” would not, because it does not show the actual selling price of the item.)
- With the new coupon policy, Walmart will also accept competitor’s Catalina manufacturer coupons. You can get a Catalina for $1 off Snuggle and use it at Walmart.
- Walmart’s new coupon policy specifically addresses coupon overage. It says “Coupons may exceed the price of the item. Change may be given or applied toward the cost of the basket purchase.”
I would print a copy and carry a copy of the coupon policy with you if you anticipate any issues.
I do not blog Walmart deals each week unless there is a weekly ad with noteworthy deals. Every store location’s regular prices are different, and Walmart does not issue a weekly ad every week. I’ve listed Walmart at the end of each week’s Deals writeup, because if you see any deals above that you want, you’ll likely also be able to do them at Walmart.

As always, these deals are guidelines for shopping. I can make no guarantee that these items will be on sale, in stock, or available at your area store. I can also not guarantee your Catalinas will print, your cashier will smile at you while you check out, or that your shopping cart won’t have a broken wheel. But I CAN teach you how to save money :)
And, also, as always, a huge thanks to the many readers who posted and emailed deals that made it into today’s Deals of the Week! We’re all in this together, and I sincerely appreciate everyone who spots and passes along good deals that we can all enjoy :) Thank you… to YOU!
* All You magazine: If you like coupons, you will probably really enjoy it. It’s an inexpensive magazine ($2.49 an issue) that is filled with many coupons each month. Subscribing via the pink banner on the right drops the price to $1.67 per issue. Depending on the values, if you use 2 or 3 coupons alone from each issue, you’ve recouped the cost of the magazine, and you’re on your way to even bigger savings.)

Thanks for the early write-up. I actually skimmed past this a few times thinking it was last weeks, then the date finally caught my eye!! Thanks again, helps me to get organized early in the day. Appreciate your hard work, now you can enjoy your Sunday too. :)

Hi Jill,
Are there 3 or 2 inserts this week? Are you counting the Parade magazine coupons as an insert? (“Sunday’s newspaper contained THREE inserts: A SmartSource (SS) and a RedPlum (RP.) The Parade magazine…”)
Thank you for posting so early!

Thank you for having this up so early on Sunday!

The only coupon I see in the September 16th SmartSource is good for 1 dollar and 50 cents off of wholy guacamole. Is that the same as wholly salsa?

I can’t find the coupon in the link…can anyone else. I have an Illinois zip code…

At my CVS, the Stride ID gum deal is buy 3 for $3, get $1 EB.
You can either get 3 for a dollar with one B1G1 ID coupon, or 4 for a dollar if you have two coupons (buy 4, use 2 coupons, pay $2, get $1 EB for an effective cost of $! for all 4).
I’m not in the Chicago area, so maybe the deal is better there.

My neighbor bought 4 of the Campbells $0.99 soup today, used her $0.50 coupons, and got back a $2 cat. This brought the price of the soup to $0.36 each. If you had two of the $0.75/2 coupons that would bring it down to $0.12 per can. WOW:)
Lynn Simmons says
The wholly salsa? Wondering if that would work
TIA

I tried the smaller size Q-tips at Target today and the deal for the $5 GC didn’t work. Every size up from that worked though. I believe the next size up was priced at $3.29.
Trucaligirl says
I know you have to have 4 to get the price on the cereal….do you have to do multiple transactions or can you do multiples of 4 in one transaction???

I know you posted a deal about $0.99 V8 Smoothies, and I actually bought one for that price at Target yesterday on a coupon whim. But I was just looking through my local ads to see if I could price match any detergent and I actually came across the Jewel ad having the V8 smoothies for $1.99! Combine your Target coupon $1/1 with a $1/1 coupon from either 10/14 SS or 9/9 SS!! These are absolutely free! And I can honestly say they are really tasty. Kids would NEVER know they had veggies in it. I’m currently drinking the wild berry flavor and it rocks. I have the mango in the fridge and I haven’t tried it yet. I think the v8 smoothies are on sale with the Jewel ad until the 24th so you have a few days to price match!
Calibabydolly says
save 5 on a future trip question.
Can you do several sets of 5 per transaction? I know in the mega events , as long as you bought in 10s, you’d get the instant savings. But this is a Catalina and wasn’t sure if they limit you to 5 items.
The ad online or on paper do not elaborate. Anyone tried it yet?
Carrie77 says
I don’t know if the whole fryers will work … I was going to do that deal today, but I noticed this on the SavingStar site when I went to add the deal to my card:
“Save $5.00 when you spend $15.00 on any wild harvest® products. (Does not include random weight meat or deli items)”
I think the whole fryers would be “random weight meat,” right? If I am wrong, please let me know!!

Hi The Jewel on Roselle and Wise in Schaumburg just put a lot of products in the clearance section. I just got a bag of Tootsie Roll Minis for 49 cents. Racconto whole wheat pasta for 50 cents, Jewel tea bags on sale for 50cents a box.

I went into CVS today in Elgin to get this deal and all they had were American Greetings cards. Is that the same thing as Hallmark or are they 2 different companies? Thanks in advance

Hi. If I have a cat coupon that says $2/2 v8 smoothies but it has the Doms logo on it, will Jewel take it?
TIA

In my IP stack I found “Buy any one milk bone dog snacks, get one free milk bone trail mix”. Can I use this with the $1.50/2 coupon from the 10/7 RP?

Hey Jill,
I’m looking forward to all the great deals at Jewel this week! If I use a manufacturer coupon in store and also have a SavingStar coupon for an item, will I get the savings from both?
dacmg says
Hi Jill,
I moved from the Chicago area to Athens GA recently. I followed you for years in Chicago! I have found the Kroger stores offers are different, including catalinas. For instance, I bought 5 General Mills products that were listed in the Deals of the Week, and it did not generate a catalina. The Pillsbury rolls were not on sale down here, either. Am I mistaken to think the deals are nation wide?
Thanks for all you do!!
Couponingtofitandfifty says
Jill, My coupons in the 9/30 SS were different in both copies I had.
One was .30 off of 3 boxes and the other was .50 off of 3 boxes.
Must be regional that you received $1 off 6 boxes.
Good for you and thanks for all the hard work.
mburger says
Just went on a quick run to Jewel & bought 4 2-liter Pepsi bottles (among other things). It was $.77, Limit 4. But with 2 BIGI coupons I printed awhile back, it made them $.38 cents each – sweet!
