Deals of the Week for September 19, 2011

Hello, Super-Couponers! I hope you’re ready to enjoy another week of shopping and saving! Last week I had a new experience – grocery shopping in Chicago, then bringing my groceries home on the train. Chicago’s NBC News asked to go shopping with me, but due to crew scheduling, I was asked to come downtown to shop. (It’s a different experience planning a trip when you know you’ve got to carry everything back home with you versus putting it in the car!) So I stuck to smaller items that my son and I could carry home in a couple of bags on the Metra. The segment is scheduled to air during the 5:00pm news on Wednesday, 9/21 on Chicago’s NBC 5.

We have a few deals this week with coupons expiring TODAY, Sunday 9/18, so I got the Deals posted a little earlier than normal if you’d like to take advantage of those. (While Deals of the Week will always be live by 6am CST Monday morning, I always post it as soon as I’m done writing!)

Kellogg’s Pop-Tarts are on sale for $1.67. Buy three and use the $1-off-3 from the 7/24 RP (expires 9/18!) or the 8/28 RP. You’ll pay $4 for 3, or $1.33 each. (Dominick’s also has Pop-Tarts on sale this week for $1.49 if you’d like to save a little more.)

One-pound boxes of Riceland Rice are on sale for .89 THROUGH SUNDAY. Use the .50 coupon from 9/11 RP and pay .39! When you consider that the 5lb. bags sells for $4.99 ($1 per pound), this cuts that price by more than half.

If you prefer brown rice, its everyday price is .99 at most Jewel stores. And when the .89 sale ends, the regular price of the 1lb. white rice is also .99.

3.6-4lb. bags of Kibbles N’ Bits Dog Food are on sale for $5.99, Buy One Get One Free. The 7/24 RP has a $1.50 coupon.

With one coupon, pay $3.49 for two bags. With two coupons, pay $2.99 for two bags, or about $1.50 each!

Dannon Danimals, Crush Cup, Coolision, or Drinkables are $2 per multipack (4-6ct.) Use the .50 coupon from 8/14 SS and pay $1.50!

Last week’s newspaper (9/11/11) contained a coupon insert booklet with over $100 worth of store coupons for Jewel-Osco. Your store may also have these coupon books on the flyer racks near the doors.

Here are your best deals this week with the $100 coupon book (going in the order that they appear in the book…)

– 5lb. bags of Value Wise Russet Potatoes are .99 with the $1.50 coupon from the book.

– Tide Laundry Detergent (50oz. liquid, 56oz. powder) is $4.99 with the $3 coupon from the book. Stack this with the .50 Liquid Tide coupon from 8/28 PG and pay $4.49, or go for the much BETTER deal by stacking the $2 Powder Tide coupon from 9/11 SS2. With this, you’ll pay $2.99 for your Tide!

– 3lb. bags of Apples are $2.49 with the $1 coupon from the book.

– Jack’s Pizzas are 5-for-$10 with the $5 coupon from the book. Stack this with the $1 Jack’s coupon from 9/11 RP and pay $9 for 5, or $1.80 each.

– Old Orchard 100% Apple Juice or Healthy Balance (64oz.) is $1.29 with the .40 coupon from the book.

– Seattle’s Best Coffee (12oz.) is $5.99 with the $2 coupon from the book. Stack this with the $1.50 coupon from 8/14 SS. You’ll pay $4.49. (There are also $1 coupons in the August and September issues of All You, or use a $1 printable.)

– Olay Definity, Pro-X, Regenerist, or Total Effects has a $4 store coupon. There’s a $3 Regenerist moisturizer coupon in the 8/14 RP. Regenerist moisturizer runs around $20-$25 depending on regular price, so this could knock it to $13-$18. The 8/14 RP also has a “Buy Regenerist, get Olay Body Wash free” coupon to use here if you’re buying Olay.

– Equaline vitamins are Buy One Get One Free with the coupon from the store ad.

Essential Everyday Toaster Pastries (6ct.) are $1.69 (regular price at most Jewel locations.) Use the $1 off coupon in the new Jewel Fresh For Fall coupon book and pay .69! Note that these coupons are limit 1 per transaction.

Speed Stick and Lady Speed Stick deodorants are on sale for $2.99, Buy One Get One Free through September 21. Buy two and use the Buy One Get One Free coupon from 9/11 SS2. You’ll pay… NOTHING… and get TWO FREE!

Mini Super-Couponing lesson: Why does this work? When you use a B1G1F coupon during a B1G1F sale, you will buy none and get two free. Here’s why… and remember, it’s important to think of your coupons AS cash. If you walk into the store and give them $2.99 in cash, how many deodorants will that pay for? Two — because the store is selling you two for $2.99. Now, look at your B1G1F coupon. What is its value? Up to $3.99. This coupon pays the price of the first deodorant with its value ($2.99) and the second is free with the store’s sale. You WILL pay tax on the pre-coupon price, as always… but after coupon, both items will be free.

It’s important to note too that you do not get coupon overage with a free or B1G1F coupon when the value is “up to $3.99.” Legally, the cashier must enter the price of the first item, which in this case is $2.99. (Anytime meat is under $2 a pound (no matter what it is — beef, pork, poultry) it’s a buy in my book, because $2 is a cycle low and a good benchmark for meat prices. This is also true for most produce. Seafood, by its nature, is more expensive per pound, but a good “buy” benchmark is $4 per pound or less.)

Note to Safeway shoppers reading from outside Chicagoland: In Chicago, Dominick’s does not double coupons (as other Safeway stores do) – if your store doubles, you’ll do even better with many of these deals. On Facebook? Request a FREE carton of Open Nature natural ice cream from Safeway, while supplies last. These coupons were available on their Facebook page a few months ago too, and if you got one from the earlier promotion, this would likely be a good week to use it at the store too. (Read on…)

This week, Dominick’s is running a Catalina sale: Spend $75 on groceries and receive a $10 Catalina for your next shopping trip. The usual exclusions apply, including anything fluid in the refrigerated dairy cases… The Catalina you receive expires 9/25/11.

Dominick’s is also running a new gas Rewards Points promo. For every $1 you spend in the store, you earn 1 point. For every $1 spent on gift cards (not including Amex, PayPower, MasterCard, MyChoice, Dominick’s or Visa) you earn 2 points, though through October 29th, you’ll earn 4 points for gift cards. Fill a prescription and earn 50 points.

Then, for every 100 points, you’ll get .10 off a gallon of gas at a Dominick’s fuel station. You can earn up to 1000 points to be redeemed for $1 off each gallon of gas. Points expire at the end of each calendar month, with September earnings expiring 10/31/11.

Post Pebbles (14.5oz.) cereals are on sale for $1.99. They’re also involved in a Catalina sale – buy 6 or more and receive a $5 Catalina!

No current coupons for these, unfortunately, but buying six boxes will cost you $11.94 and you’ll get a $5 Catalina back. That’s $6.94 for six, or $1.16 each.

Betty Crocker fruit snacks (8oz.) are on sale for $1.99. Use any of the following to drop them to $1.49-$1.74:

The weekly ad shows a Buy One Get One Free sale on frozen foods. Of course, Dominick’s has thoughtfully omitted the prices of all of these items from the ad.

* During weekends that I can’t make it out to physically price-check, I use Safeway’s online delivery prices as a guide. The following prices were taken from browsing Safeway’s delivery prices and are usually very close, if not identical, to what I find when I go to Dominick’s. They MAY vary at your local store. But it’s worth bookmarking if you’ve ever wondered “I wonder how much this costs at Dominick’s.”

If you have the $5-off-$15 frozen foods coupon from the freezer coupon book, use it here for even better deals. But, with Dominick’s not allowing a coupon to be used on a free item, any of these “off-2” coupons will actually require you to buy FOUR to use them.

Dominick’s is also running a “Buy 3, Save $5” sale on frozen seafood. Again, with no prices in the ad, Dominick’s message seems to be “You’ll be saving some money here, but we didn’t feel it necessary to tell you how much. Why don’t you make a trip to the store to see if any of this stuff is worth buying?”

If you haven’t yet signed up for the “Just For U“ electronic discounts that you can load to your Dominick’s Fresh Values card, you may want to. For registering your card, you’ll receive an ecoupon for a FREE 12-ct. Lucerne large eggs! You’ll also activate a set of electronic discounts that are tied to your card for the next 90 days. Each person’s discounts are different, and they’re based on past purchases made with your Fresh Values card at Dominick’s.

Well… there’s a lot of cereal at Meijer! There are no prices in the ad. Reader Julia writes that she read over at The Shopper’s Apprentice that Food Club bagged cereals are $1.15 each. These sound like Malt-O-Meal type knockoffs of Cheerios, Rice Krispies, etc. But buying 4 of these will gain you FREE milk.

Well, with milk running around $2.99/gallon, if you buy 4 bags of Food Club cereals to get the milk, it will cost you $4.60 – that’s only $1.61 more than simply buying a gallon of milk. If you’d be buying milk anyway, it works out to .40 per cereal.

Coupon books to look for at Walgreens: Walgreens Infant Care (has a $2 coupon inside for Walgreens brand diapers, which often go on sale. All expire 12/2011.)

Hyland’s Night Time Cold & Cough 4 Kids syrup (4oz.) is on sale for $4.99. Buy it and get $4.99 back in Register Rewards, making it FREE!

Blistex Lip Soother (.15oz.) is on sale for $2. Buy it and get $2 back in RRs, making this FREE too!

Trident gum is super cheap after a big coupon stack. 9-18 piece packs are .79 each, limit 4, with the store coupon in this week’s ad. The September Walgreens coupon book also has a store coupon for .50-off-2. (Yes, Walgreens’ registers do allow both of these coupons to be stacked together, as the values are different!) Top this super stack off with the $1-off-3 manufacturer coupon from the 9/18 SS. Whew!

So here’s how to do the deal:

Buy 3 packs of Trident.
The first store coupon will make them .79 per pack ($2.37)
The second, .50-off-2 store coupon will take .25 off each pack (now $1.62)
The manufacturer coupon will take $1 off, leaving you with a balance of .62 for three, or about .21 each!

It’s rare that we see a deal on Softsoap liquid soap refills, so this one’s not too bad. The 56-ounce Softsoap refills are on sale for $7.99, Buy One Get One Free. Here’s a .70 printable. Print TWO of these coupons and use one on each bottle.

With two coupons, pay $6.59 for two bottles, or about $3.30 each. Considering that a “good” price lately for the 7.5-8.5oz. Sofsoap has been running around $1 per pump, and we haven’t had too many great deals on those lately, this is a fair price for the refill.

Here’s a great deal on M&Ms! The 9.9-12/6oz. bags are on sale for $2.99, or $2.50 each when you buy in twos. M&Ms are also involved in a monthly Register Reward deal: Buy $10 worth of M&Ms and get $5 back in Register Rewards. (UPDATE: Many are writing asking where this RR deal was advertised. It originally appeared in the 8/29 Walgreens flyer and is a month-long deal.)

The 9/11 RP has a coupon for $1 off Pretzel M&Ms. So, buy four bags of M&Ms to do the deal.

With one $1 coupon, pay $9 and get $5 back in RRs. That’s $4 for 4, or $1 per bag.
With two $1 coupons, pay $8 and get $5 back in RRs. That’s $3 for 4, or .75 per bag.
With three $1 coupons, pay $7 and get $5 back in RRs. That’s $2 for 4, or .50 per bag.
And, with four $1 coupons, pay $6 and get $5 back in RRs. That’s ONE DOLLAR for four bags, or .25 each!

The 8/28 RP has a $1-off-2 coupon for M&Ms too, and the September All You has a $1.50-off-2 coupon too! With one of each, buy another four bags. Use the $1-off-2 and the $1.50-off-2. Pay $7.50 and get $5 back — that’s $2.50 for 4 bags, or about .63 per bag — still a great price!

If you like Prevacid Acid Reducer, it’s free after a coupon/rebate deal this week. The 28ct. 15mg. Prevacid is on sale for $19.99. The 9/18 SS has a coupon for $4 off AND a mail-in rebate form. Use the coupon, pay $15.99, and then send in the rebate. For the cost of a stamp, it’s yours!

Herbal Essences or Aussie Hair Care (6-14oz.) are on sale for $3.99 each, or 2-for-$6. When you buy two, you’ll get $2 back in Register Rewards. The 8/7 RP has a $1 coupon, and the 8/28 PG has a $1-off-2. If you have two $1 coupons, it’s a better deal, but you can do it either way.

With two $1 coupons, pay $4 for two and get $2 back in RRs – that’s $2 for two, or $1 each.

With the $1-off-2 coupon, pay $5 for two and get $2 back in RRs – that’s $3 for two, or $1.50 each.

Tom’s of Maine toothpaste and deodorant are both on sale for $3.99. Buy it and get $2 back in RRs. There are $1 coupons for each in the 9/18 SS. With a $1 coupon, pay $2.99 and get $2 back, making your Tom’s of Maine just .99! We don’t often see deals on this, so if you like it, it’s time to stock up.

This next deal is dedicated to my brother-in-law, who is brand-specific to his favorite deodorant, Mitchum. Both Mitchum and Lady Mitchum are on sale for $1.99 with the store coupon in this week’s Wags ad. Stack this with the $1 coupon from the 8/21 SS and pay .99! The 9/11 SS1 has a .75 coupon too for more better-priced Mitchum.

Angel Soft 12 double-roll bath tissue is on sale for $5.99. Use the .50 coupon from 8/14 RP and pay $5.49.

Gain dish detergent (11oz.) is .99 with the store coupon in this week’s ad. Use the .50 coupon from 8/14 RP and pay .49!

Walgreens store coupon deals:

Morton Iodized Salt (26oz.) or Nice Baking Soda(16oz.) are .50 each, limit 4, with the store coupon in this week’s ad.

Single rolls of Big Roll bath tissue or Tuf paper towels are .50 each, limit 6, with store coupon.

No Nonsense Essential Basics Knee Highs are .33 each, limit 6, with store coupon.

This month, all Walgreens and W brand items are on sale “Buy 1, Get 1 50% off.” If there’s anything Walgreens-branded that you need, you might as well buy another at half off.

One deal I spotted with this – 12-large-roll packages of Walgreens Ultra Toilet Paper are $3.99. Buy another and the second will be $2 – that’s 24 rolls for $5.99, or about .30 per roll.

This sale will work out to decently-priced diapers too if you have the $2 coupon from the infant care book. W Jumbo Diapers are regularly-priced around $8.99 at most stores. If you buy one, the second pack will ring at $4.50. With the $2 infant care coupon coming off both packs, you’ll pay $11.49 for two packs, or about $5.75 each.

I was curious to see if there would be any deals with the “Spend $15, get $7 in RRs” deal on Excedrin. However, the Excedrin’s priced kind of high this week:

DEAL IDEAS:

Huggies Slip-Ons are your best deal here if you’ve got enough $3 coupons. To do an all-Huggies deal, buy three jumbo packs of Huggies Slip-Ons ($27.) Use three $3 coupons. Pay $18 and get $10 back in ECBs! That’s $8 for THREE jumbo packs, or $2.67 each! And, you’re three jumbo packs closer to getting a FREE pack with the “Buy 6, get 7th free” diaper deal.

For a mostly-PediaSure deal, buy two PediaSure ($20) and two Johnson’s Baby items ($3 each, now $26.) Use a $3 Pediasure coupon, a $2 PediaSure coupon, and two $1 Johnson’s coupons. Pay $19 and get $10 back in ECBs. That’s $9 for everything. Look at it as getting two PediaSures for $4.50 each (less than half price) plus two “free” Johnson’s products.

While I wish there were coupons current for PediaLyte, this isn’t a bad deal if you want to stock up. Buy 6 PediaLyte ($24) and one Johnson’s Baby product ($3.) Use $1 coupon for the Johnson’s product. Pay $26 and get $10 back in ECBs. That’s $16 for 6 Pedialyte, or $2.67 per bottle, plus “free” Johnson’s item of your choice.

Scott Choose-a-Size Paper Towels pack (6 Mega Rolls) are $5.99. Buy it and get $1 back in Extra Care Bucks! Use the $1 coupon from 8/14 SS or August All You. You’ll pay $4.99 and get $1 back, making these $3.99!

Sunshine Cheez-it crackers (7.5-9oz.) are on sale for $2. Buy two and use the $1-off-2 from 9/18 RP. You’ll pay $3 for two, or $1.50 each!

Mott’s 6ct. Applesauce Cups are on sale for $1.69. Buy two and use the $2-off-2 coupon from the Dominick’s “Make a Muscle” coupon book. You’ll pay $1.38 for two, or .69 each!

Policies to know:

• Walmart will price match any competitor’s advertised price. Bring the other store’s flyers with you to the store.
   
• With the new coupon policy, Walmart will also accept other store’s STORE coupons with an actual price listed on them. For example, a Dominick’s store coupon advertising “.99 Ragu Pasta Sauce” would be accepted. A Walgreens store coupon advertising “2/$1 Morton’s Salt” would be accepted. (A Target store coupon for “$2.50 off Huggies” would not, because it does not show the actual selling price of the item.)
   
• With the new coupon policy, Walmart will also accept competitor’s Catalina manufacturer coupons. You can get a Catalina for $1 off Snuggle and use it at Walmart.
   
• Walmart’s new coupon policy specifically addresses coupon overage. It says “Coupons may exceed the price of the item. Change may be given or applied toward the cost of the basket purchase.”
   

I would print a copy and carry a copy of the coupon policy with you if you anticipate any issues.
