CBS’s Dorothy Tucker has been investigating the expired food issue at Dominick’s today, and CBS 2 Chicago aired a segment on this today at 5:00pm. I met with her at a local Dominick’s this morning to discuss, and Dorothy did some hidden-camera work to find her own expired foods on the shelves:
You can also read the transcript here. Greg Karp from the Chicago Tribune also discussed this story on the 5:00 WGN 9 news.
And, I did an audio interview with WGN Radio, which aired during the 5pm newscast.
WGN News had a mention during the 2/18 morning news:
They also did a poll during the newscast:
MORNING NEWS POLL: Do you consider the expiration date on food as just a suggestion?
Yes: 26%
No: 74%

That happened fast! Wonder what kind of “canned” answers Dom’s will have in response to that!

Thanks,Jill for helping to expose such an important story. I really had no idea this was a problem, since I don’t shop there often (because of the rude empoloyees!)

Jill you were wonderful on channel 2 news today. You truly hit the nail on the head with Dominick’s expired product. Great work!!!

First segment right at 5:00pm .
Liked the canned response corporate gave and the newscasters question as to why Jill had not gotten anywhere with Dominick’s until CBS stepped in.

I saw you and you were great. I bet Dominicks is in a big panic, maybe now they will believe in the power you hold!!!! You have my respect and admiration;-)

Let’s hope the “high level team” Dom’s has put on this isn’t the same team they have answering their FB page!

Hey Dominicks, CAN YOU HEAR US NOW???

few moments. Thought the beautiful weather would be first! Gotta love that your segment got top billing tonight! Keep up the great work.

Saw you on the News tonight. First I hope consumers got the message that the food is “safe” to consume. The manufacturers have determined that to benefit from all those “nutrients” in the “processed” food it would be best if used by the posted date on the package. The greater issue here is that consumers are paying FULL PRICE for less than full value when the product is purchased after the BEST BY date. These products sell in stores like “Big Lots” at a discount. Shame on Dominick’s for not offering more discounts to move these stale products.
Hey Jill when you’re ready to move on, I have a recommendation for your next mission – get Dominick’s to properly train their baggers to STOP packing my raw meat in the same bag as my fresh vegetables – POTENTIAL CROSS CONTAMINATION is of greater risk to my health than an out of date product – now they’re really trying to harm me:(

Does anyone else wonder if the Dominick’s corporate team knew all along that expired products filled the shelves in many of their store locations? The situation is too widespread to just be store manager carelessness. While the practice may not have been condoned it most certainly doesn’t appear to have been discouraged.
dancingwolves says
Isn’t it a “Fresh Values” card we use to shop there?

The 10:00pm news is replaying the story in a few minutes.

Heard about it on the 8 o’clock news!

I just taped a piece for Chicago’s WBBM radio, which is supposed to air around 10:30am this morning.
You can listen live at https://chicago.cbslocal.com/station/wbbm-newsradio-780/ .. or, of course, by turning on a radio :)

I wanted to shop out both Jewel and Dominick’s a long time ago. However, I could not find anybody who thought that it was worthwhile. The Jewel(and I think the Dominick’s)stores that I frequent have signs stating that cameras and recording devices are prohibited, so I did not want to do it by myself. I did not want to have to buy items to have as evidence. I am glad that you did it.
Years ago, I had contacted somebody at The Tribune about this, specifically regarding dairy products at Dominick’s, but I was greeted with apathy. They do not have the resources to do such reporting, or so I was told. (In other words, they do not want to put money into such stories.) I am glad that they could not ignore your reporting.
Hopefully, this will scare both of these chains into not mislabeling meat anymore too. The Tribune’s John Yates did not think that that is a big deal. I also reported the mislabeling (in writing)to Lisa Madigan’s crew. They won’t act though, unless they get tons of complaints. Once again, I cannot afford to buy food as evidence. If you want to look in to that, I would be happy to go shopping with you.
