I was setting the table for dinner, and the kids asked if we could have Cokes with dinner, as it’s a special occasion. (The occasion, of course, is a several-days extension of their winter break due to school cancellations!) I said yes.
They went out to the garage, where I keep my beloved sugar Cokes, along with some bottles of juice and a couple of 2-liters of pop from past coupon deals.
Well, they came in, opened the Coke, poured it… and this is what they saw:
And we discovered…
Anyway, let this be a fun reminder that your garage-stored beverages may be in danger of freezing! Stay warm, my friends…

My DH always remembers to bring in all the beverages we store in the garage. Otherwise, I would be finding frozen drinks as well.

Oh my! I have the opposite problem here in AZ! I do store some drinks in our garage – no soda though. I actually keep a bunch of canned food out there and have not had a problem. Someone I know had left a whole case of soda in her car during the month of Sept and found a big mess! She did not seem to mind, her husband found the mess and cleaned it up! Stay warm all – we think it is cold here but nothing compared to other parts of the country.

We routinely put soda out on the deck if we’re having a big family dinner this time of year to free up fridge space. We did that on Sunday and ended up with frozen solid bottles of soda. They didn’t explode so I guess it’ll be fine in the end.

My sister-in-law visited Friday and asked if we had any fluid as she sorely needed it for her windshield on ride home.
I picked the bottle off the floor which is adjacent to the family room wall…and the top layer was frozen….didn’t think that was suppose to happen.

on my enclosed front porch. Last night, we hear some BOOMS! Look out there and a bunch of 2 liters had exploded!! Also, a can of root beer. Ugh!

We also store all of our pop in the garage. No explosions (so far anyway), but a can of Minute Maid lite lemonade was slushy today. Does anyone know if pop loses its carbonation when it freezes? I just bought four 12-packs at Jewel because they had their 4 for $10 sale during the holidays, and I also keep a fairly large number of 2 liter bottles on hand (bought when on sale of course!) for when guests drop in. I would hate to lose my whole pop supply!

For fun we placed a can of Diet Rite out in the driveway to see how long it’d take to explode. (We don’t actually drink Diet Rite, so we had no problems sacrificing our single can). https://instagram.com/p/i2H-nEMiWA/
After it burst my husband realized he forgot to bring the rest of our kids’ drinks from the garage. Half the water bottles had burst but what was most disturbing was realizing the garage itself was frozen! Doors, walls, locks, etc all covered in frost and ice. Yikes!

and my DS just went out to get a gallon of milk & one is mostly SLUSH! Yikes!

We also store things in our garage, but we don’t really drink soda. But after we saw a video: we purchased some 2L for this express purpose… to turn them into slush! We wanted to chill them to the point that they were colder than necessary to freeze, but hadn’t actually started freezing yet. But once you pour it out or shake it up, or just add a piece of ice to it, it’s enough to start the chain reaction of freezing/slush! There’s still sugar in 7-Up/Sprite, but perhaps the water content is higher so it froze before the Coke did.
Here are the videos we saw that inspired us:
