We always enjoy growing a garden every year, but as fall approached, things were winding down. Weeks ago, I cut down the cornstalks, picked the last tomatoes, and cut our pumpkins off the vine. I also thought we’d picked the last of our green beans. Our beans bloomed and regrew three times this year, which I was thrilled about. I haven’t gotten around to pulling the bean poles out of the garden yet though.
And indeed, we did.

I tore out the old stuff and replanted a 2nd crop of cold crops. Radishes only take 21 days and the greens are just about big enough to start cutting. My neighbor has been “trying” to grow pumpkins all summer and cannot for the life of him get any to grow big enough. The guy across the street has 8 beautiful pumpkins decorating his porch and he grew them all himself…..gardens can be odd!

My garden was terrible this year, barely any tomatoes and jalapeños.
And my peach tree didn’t even bloom.
I guess I can’t complain since we had such a bounty last year, I still have jars of peach jam and frozen peach pie fillings to use. :)
Every year though, I have lots of pumpkin and gourd plants popping around that squirrels plant for me! I let them eat all the Halloween stuff I put out and they always hide seeds. This year I have one good plant and it has 15-20 gourds on it, easy. Just 2 days ago, I found in front of the front door that they picked one gourd and started eating it. My squirrels are really great- they plant their own food! :)

I only have about 15 x 5 of garden space, and then I augment by planting some by the house. This year the beans were spectacular. I harvested over 23 pounds from four rows about 9′ each. Tomatoes were slow to ripen, but we managed to get enough to can quite a few quarts. The green peppers really produced nicely. No peach blossoms at all, so no peaches. However, the trees survived, and are looking good right now. They had no leaves until about the second week of May–very unusual. Blackberries did well; raspberries disappeared. My herbs flourished! I’m happy.

Here in AZ where I am, I do not usually have to deal with frost. I have orange and grapefruit trees that will be ready in January. In the garden – tomatoes and peppers from February until June and had a lot. Now need to plant again – more tomatoes and not sure what else – I miss the tomatoes!
