UPDATE: Giveaway has ended! The winners are Dtomkins845, Prea, Mygoldcloud and Queenkitty!
Do you have problems keeping produce fresh in the fridge? While some things (apples and strawberries come to mind) are eaten within days of bringing them home, other produce tends to languish in the refrigerator — especially if you don’t need the an pepper, lemon, tomato or onion for a recipe. While I know there are better ways to protect and store produce, I must confess that I usually leave the produce in the plastic bags from the store, which isn’t the best way to ensure everything stays fresh.
Enter Good Cook’s ProFreshionals produce keepers! This is a fun, practical set of food storage containers specifically designed to keep a variety of produce fresh. And FOUR of my readers will win this entire set of them!
The set includes:
- Grapefruit Keeper
- Asparagus Keeper
- Pepper Keeper
- Cantaloupe Keeper
- Citrus Keeper
- Tomato Keeper
- Banana Keeper
As part of this giveaway, Good Cook sent over the full set of ProFreshionals keepers for me to try out and review. Each keeper is designed to keep a particular kind of produce fresh in the refrigerator.
Sadly, this is how most of my produce was stored in the fridge prior to preparing for this promotion:
But Good Cook has a Produce Keeper for each of these. Who knew?
The Citrus Keeper is designed to keep a whole or cut lemon or lime fresh (plus, it’s darn cute.) I love this as I rarely use an entire lemon or lime at once for a recipe. I used half this lemon for a recipe, and five days later, I opened the keeper up to use the rest. It was fresh! I know from experience that my former “stick it in a plastic bag” method wouldn’t have had the same result.
This Bell Pepper Keeper is fun too. It snugly holds a whole or cut bell pepper, and I was also impressed with the freshness of the cut pepper after leaving it in the refrigerator for a few days. It was still crisp and not soggy. My only complaint with this keeper is that larger bell peppers won’t fit in it. I had to really squeeze this one into the keeper, and I had a larger bell pepper that I used for dinner which did not fit in it at all.
While all of these Produce Keepers are pretty cool and practical, my favorite is the Asparagus Keeper:
Again, I usually keep my asparagus in a bag, on its side, in a drawer. And it gets soggy and rubbery in a day or two. I think the design of this keeper is brilliant! It’s designed so that you can fill the bottom of it with water, then trim the ends of the asparagus and put them in the keeper. A raised grid in the bottom of the keeper allows water to circulate under the cut ends and keep the asparagus fresh. And on top…
… the lid is vented with small holes so the asparagus can breathe. How about that?
All of the Produce Keepers have twist-and-lock lids, and they’re made of BPA-free plastic. Their shapes and colors make it easy to recognize what’s inside, unless you come up with alternate uses for them too. I’ve already discovered that the Cantaloupe Keeper also provides a nice, squish-proof container for a pound of grapes, and it keeps them fresher than leaving them in the bag. And my Grapefruit Keeper…
… is currently doubling as an onion keeper, thanks to this enormous Vidalia that was too large to use for one recipe. Another bonus? The cut onion is not smelling up everything else in my fridge. This keeper is keeping the onion-licious scent where it belongs… not seeping into other foods.

My 6,5,and 3 year old LOVE to go “asparagus hunting” with Daddy. We eat fresh asparagus cut right out of the ditches about three times a week in the month of May. Here’s the best way to eat them. Put them in a ziploc and throw in some olive oil, garlic, pepper, and Montreal steak seasoning. Shake, shake, shake and let sit a few minutes. Then cook them on the grill:-) The asparagus keeper would look so much cuter than the bowl filled with water we use now;-)

Has anyone heard that it is better to use glass to store food vs. plastic? Interesting article here: https://www.copywriterskitchen.com/2009/02/27/are-you-afraid-of-your-plastic-food-containers/

In case you don’t win these (or you have more produce than one set of these can handle), here are some alternatives:
When I cut a lemon, I go ahead and squeeze out all the juice and put the extra juice in a tiny Tupperware container. Because of the high acid content in the juice, it will keep for a long time.
When I buy asparagus, I cut an inch or so off the bottoms, and put them in a mug with an inch or so of water. You can put a plastic sandwich bag loosely over the top, if you want to.
Half a grapefruit seems to keep pretty well in a Tupperware or Rubbermaid container.
When I use half a banana, I peel the whole thing and put the unused half in a Rubbermaid container. It keeps fine for a few days. (I store unpeeled bananas in the fridge, as well.)
When I slice a cantaloupe, I only slice up half a cantaloupe at a time. I just cover the cut end of the remaining half with plastic wrap until I’m ready to slice it.
I slice bellpeppers, put them in a freezer zipper bag, and put them in the freezer. They work fine for cooking later.
Once I slice open a tomato, I go ahead and slice or chop the rest, put it in a Tupperware container to use within the week on sandwiches, salads, tacos, etc.
Also, keep a list of what produce you have in the fridge so you don’t forget to use it!
