I have to confess, I’ve never been a “nice kitchen knives” kind of girl. Don’t get me wrong — it’s not that I don’t like nice knives. I only recently gained an awareness of what the right kitchen knives can do for you. And, quite truthfully, the money-saver in me also thought, “Why should I get new knives? I have knives.”

Even that’s kind of an understatement. More accurately, I had knives. Back in 1994, when I bought my first house, a friend gave me one of those knife sets that comes in a wooden block stand as a housewarming gift:

Where did the knives go? Well, over the past almost-20 years, they’ve become dull, broken, and what have you. The fact that I keep this nearly-empty block stand of knives in my kitchen is kind of embarrassing.

Enter Good Cook. As part of this giveaway, they sent over a set of new kitchen knives for me to review and enjoy. And very quickly, I realized what I was missing in the kitchen. Here’s what I got (and what one lucky reader will win too!)

Each of these knives is a different color, so it’s very easy to tell them apart and keep track of each knife’s purpose. They also each come with a color-coded knife sheath so that you don’t cut yourself if you keep them in a drawer. Each knife also has a non-stick coating on the blade, which makes cutting smooth and nearly effortless.

The first knife I used was the yellow bread knife. We had just gotten a loaf of unsliced Italian bread. My previous attempts to slice a loaf of bread like this would result in a partially squashed loaf and less-than-uniform slices. Take a look at this:

All of these knives are great, but this is my favorite of the bunch. Now, anytime I make my favorite Artisan Bread At-Home Recipe, I know I will never have another beautiful homemade loaf of bread crushed by a dull knife that’s not up for the job. Even my husband, who took these photos, said “That is an incredible knife!”

Another favorite among the bunch? The Santoku knife. Santoku knives are Japanese-style three-purpose knives, good for chopping, dicing, and mincing. And it does all of that in a flash (I feel like one of the Iron Chefs when I’m chopping up an onion with this baby!) I have to say too that the nonstick coating on these knives is a fantastic feature. Nothing sticks to them. I used the Santoku knife to cut a brick of Kerrygold cheese, and even though this is a firm cheese, the knife slices right through and doesn’t stick to the cheese at all.

I could say something great about every one of these knives, and I will:

– The purple sandwich knife has a kind of flower-petal-shaped blade, and it slices right through both big sub sandwiches and grilled paninis with ease.

– The blue chef’s knife is great for slicing meat. I used this to cut up chicken breasts to make my favorite Orange Chicken recipe and it took half the time it used to with my former, really-needs-to-be-retired-now chef’s knife.

– The green paring knife is fantastic peeling fruit and vegetables. I was cutting up an apple the other day for my son and decided to see if I could cut thin, flat slices with it like the chef does at our favorite sushi bar. I’m no pro, but I was impressed with my super-thin, crisp apple slices. Even my son said “How did you make these?”

– And lastly, the red utility knife is good for anything and everything. I’ve never cut a tomato without completely squashing it until I cut one with this knife. We used it tonight to separate racks of ribs into smaller sections for the kids. It’s small, so it’s good for small jobs where you don’t want to wield an 8″ knife around.

Now, as an aficionado of many cooking shows, I know that you can go crazy spending money on good knives. (When I was researching knives for this review, I stumbled across this $999.95 chef’s knife! Wow.) And, as someone who’s money-conscious, I like things that are of good quality and also of good value. I’ve become a fan of these knives for both reasons.

I can now say good-bye to my embarrassing, old set of knives. And because these knives come with their own sheaths, they’re now living in my most-used-kitchen-tools jar on the counter. Much better!

    FYI-any decent corrugated bread knife will cut an Italian loaf that easily unless something is wrong with it. My hubby and I laugh at those cheesy made for TV ads selling forever sharp knives or what ever they call them these days. The presentation is really a lesson on how to use a knife and how NOT to use a knife, because he says even a cheap but decent set of knives will out perform those TV knives when used properly… YES, that is what I live with :o) And YES he still loves my cooking, even if it is NOT haute culiary cuisine.
