A reader recently emailed to ask where quality figures into my “saving money” equation. Would I buy something if it was cheap, regardless of quality? She went on to note how many bargain-priced clothing items are cut and sewn off grain, often with the fabric’s design running askew. Another reader pointed out the same thing when discussing trying to find quality bedsheets.
Have I been tempted to buy something just because the price was low? Sure. And I’ve been burned in the process.
Let me re-introduce you to this striped maxi-dress I purchased from Tanga over the summer:
Well, the photograph was cute. This is what I actually got:
Anything sewn off the grain drives me crazy, and it’s so prevalent. All too frequently, I see striped or patterned clothing with the design not lined up on the side seams. When did quality control go out the window? And worse, when did we just start accepting it?
Maybe other people aren’t looking at things as closely as I am, but here are a few more examples from around my house.
And then, there’s this one…
Am I alone in feeling this way about garment quality?

I have seen their clothes on MUM ,and they look cheesy .Guess its what you expect out of them . I am too fussy and would rather wait for a sale on a good quality then wear something irregular or cheap! Daughter worked at Spiegels many years ago ,so really got spoiled with designers clothes at cheap prices plus her discount .Women feel so much better when they have a good outfit on .But again going back alot of years ,much more casual clothes being worn today .We should all put a negative remark about your outfit on their Facebook page and them maybe they will refund your money .

I like the idea of a negative remark on Tanga’s FB page!

I bought my daughter boots for 79.99 three months ago before she left for college. I thought they might wear better than the ones I usually get her at Kohl’s for about $40 (they last one season and then a lot of the color has worn off). It has only been about 6 weeks that she has actually been wearing them and the heel separated from the boot. Famous Footwear said absolutely no EXCHANGE- I wasn’t even trying to get my money back, just a different pair. I think an $80 pair of boots should last more than 3 months, and I am not even talking about wear and tear- they are literally falling apart.
All of a sudden Kohl’s boots for half the price seem like a great deal.
