“… and look at what I bought!”
Click to see this photo larger, as well as some other fun pictures I took at the Lake in the Hills store today.
(Don’t worry – I didn’t photograph other shoppers, only their carts…
This was my favorite surprise deal today. I figured the treats would be good, but I had no idea what they were on sale for. All Milk Bone and Beneful dog treats were $3, so $1.50 after the 50% savings. With the following:
– $1.50 off Beneful Baked Delights dog treats
– $1.10 off Beneful Healthy Smile dog treats
– $1 off Milk-Bone dog treats
… these were FREE, .40, and .50 per box. The Pillsbury cookies were FREE after store and $1 manufacturer coupon. The DiGiornos were $5 today, ringing up at $2.50. I bought six with three $2-off-2s from the 11/3 RP. Paid $9 and got a $3 Catalina! $6 for 6 is $1 each!
Other random things you can’t really see in the photos:
– Nestle morsels baking chips: They’re $1.67 per bag, so .84 after 50% off. With the .75-off-2 from the 11/17 RP, I took these home for about .47 per bag!
– I went in looking for Goldfish crackers, but they were sold out. The Safeway Starfish crackers (knockoff) are a good deal though, as they’re $1.99, Buy One Get One Free. You end up getting two for .99, or about .50 each. My kids will get starfish instead of Goldfish today…
– K-Cups. I never buy these unless they’re super cheap as we have a Keurig Ekobrew cup to use our own coffee in. The K-Cups were very picked over at my store. The best deal of what was left were the Green Mountain K-Cups. 12ct. boxes were on sale for $7.99, so $4 per box after discount. With the $1.75 coupon from the (I think) 11/3 SS1, they were $2.25 per box.
– 28oz. bags of Safeway breaded butterfly shrimp were $8.99, so $4.50 each. We like this and that’s a great price for those big bags.
– Hallmark cards! The card department is 50% off too. I got a bunch of .99 cards for .49 each as I never have enough of them in the house when my kids get invited to birthday parties.
If you go to Dominick’s today, be aware that several people have reported on the blog, and to me via email, that today is the last day Dominick’s will be accepting coupons. I don’t have confirmation of that, but obviously, go sooner than later.
Fresh meats and liquor are not 50% off yet. Liquor is supposed to go 50% off on Monday, and the meats on Friday, Dec. 20th.

Good for you! I hope you were sure to smirk in all the employees faces as they head into the holiday season unemployed.

I was out, and didn’t have my coupons with me, and had 3 kids, so I stuck to things I don’t normally see on sale, or get coupons for – mostly organic items. I feel like I came out pretty well on some of those items, since they’re things we buy regularly anyway. Heading back out this evening with coupons in hand after my other half can get home to watch kids. Even without coupons, there are some great deals in the store. Waiting wasn’t too bad, and I tried to be friendly and help out another mom in line with a fussy baby and an older child who was having a hard time waiting. We made new friends, the kids were all happy and we got out unscathed. :)

It wasn’t as crazy as I thought it would be at the Buffalo Grove/Wheeling store. Everyone seemed pretty chill. I got 2 boxes of Vanilla Chex, 2 boxes of Apple-Cinnamon Chex, 4 boxes of roasted red pepper Triscuts, 2 bags of gluten-free CrunchMaster crackers, 3 big jars of Smucker’s All natural PB (Never ever goes on sale or has coupons, but I go through it so quick I decided to stock up since it’s normally $6 a jar!) a can of Safeway coffee, and two 2-liters of Safeway diet cola for $18 after coupons. I’ll be psyched when the liquor goes on sale…As nice as this big saving day is, I will miss Dominicks! J4U always had such awesome deals. Does anyone shop at Marianos? I heard they do card coupons as well but when I looked into it, the deals didn’t seem as steep as J4U at Dominicks.

I have a friend who works near the LITH Doms. She just texted me that the store is packed, the parking lot is full, and people are waiting in the lot for empty carts. I think it’s safe to say that it’s still busy over there..!

For the maple syrup as well! Got the same one as you!

I made 4 trips to 3 locations, Arlington Heights, Palatine, Buffalo Grove and bought 268 items (1.70 each), paid $456.11 and “saved” 764.09.
I bought tons of coffee (including 20 bags of Starbucks, lots of spices, specialty cheeses (brie, romano, asiago in Deli) & specialty oils (grape seed, gallons of peanut oil for about $8.50 ea. & coconut oil), 25 canisters of planters deluxe cashews & mixed nuts, 8 bags pistachios.
My biggest bargains were .12 Mount Olive pickles (they had .75 hang tags) .50 Cracker Barrel cheese and 4 free Sparkle single roll paper towels, I am not sure how that happened – check your just4U.
Just about everything I bought was a stock up price for me so I am thrilled with the savings. I got overcharged on a few items like the skimpy 4 pack of angel soft – should have been .50 each minus Q’s but they did not ring up BOGO, can’t complain too much.
Don’t forget to check the produce department if your looking for nuts.

I hope the person with the stock loading cart brought the van! I like how they have the cleaning supplies hanging off the side and HELLO it looks like the kitty cats will be set for life! Of course you can never have enough toilet paper.

So I just found out about this now, any chance there’s anything left at the LITH/Algonquin store and is it worth going tomorrow morning?

After you replied to my post about whether it was too late to bother going to Dominick’s this morning, I hurried over to the Dom’s in Geneva. I was surprised that 4 and a half hours after they opened, there was still so much food in every dept. Now, a lot was over-priced even at 50% off, but there were a lot of good deals! I ran over without coupons and filled a cart to the point where stuff was falling off of it. I only bought things that ended up a good or great price after their sales and then the 50% off on top of that. And a few luxury items of course. Weird lucky things helped, like when the butcher came out with a load of frozen crab legs that hadn’t been there before! I thought all that stuff disappeared at 6:05 am. 206 items for 288.32 makes it about 1.40 an item. That’s pretty good isn’t it? Well, for my level of experience, it’s pretty good. I thought the Dominick’s staff was outstanding, by the way. They had an organized method of having people stand in the vestibule to wait for carts, which the staff member brought to you. They kept announcing over the loudspeakers what was going on when there was a delay with the computers. The cashier even peeled my jerky peelies for me. She was telling me that almost every person there has not found a new job yet, and that the employees found out about the closings when the press did. I feel terrible for these people, and I hope anyone that prays, will pray for them.

Jill – I heard Friday the 20th last week. Did you hear something different?
Ruby Red says
Holy cow, that is a load! I don’t have any desire to wait in those lines. I think I am fried from Christmas shopping.
hopper74 says
Hey ladies,
Just wanted you all to make sure to check expiration dates on the stuff you are buying at Dominicks. I know while I was waiting in line I started looking at the dates of my products – a lot of them were expired! Being that I made nice with the people waiting in line, they would watch my cart as I ran to exchange the product. I had Gatorade that expired in August 2013, Motts Juice that expired September 2013. I was fortunately to be able to find some that expire next year but its crazy that the product was still even on the shelf and hadn’t been pulled months ago!

I got the shrimp poppers too, but I didn’t have a coupon on them. Was there a coupon on them?

My husband and I went to JCP this morning to pick up our family portraits and don’t you know, it’s just up the street from Dominick’s. So yes, we went back.
Lake in the Hills still has groceries on the shelves, but what you’ll find is pretty random. I bought more canned dog food and more dog treats (used someone else’s computer in the house to print more treat coupons.) Safeway canned cat food is .25 a can with discount. Small 2oz. bags of Friskies cat treats are .25 after the discount and current insert coupons. The large 6-ounce bags are $3, so $1.50 after discount and .50 after this printable. (After seeing my dog food score yesterday, my husband reminded me that we also have cats & should get some things for them. You can see which animal gets my love in this house… ;)
We found bags of Safeway Bao (Chinese meat buns) on sale for $4.49 down from $8.99. They rang up $2.25. And as another poster mentioned, they were expired. They are two months out of date, and every package they had were the same date. Still, we love these, and for that price we were willing to take a chance. They’re frozen… how bad can they be?! We used to pay $9/bag at the Filipino store for Siopao buns, which are very similar to these.
They had also restocked the Pepperidge Farm puff pastry turnovers – they’re $1.75 and there are $1 insert coupons for these. They were completely out when I was there yesterday, so I snapped up some apple turnovers.
Husband picked up two boxes of Safeway cinnamon graham crackers at $1.25 each and a 100ct. box of Safeway tea bags for .99.
I bought a Lucerne insulated cooler-style reusable shopping bag which was marked $2.99. (One of mine is falling apart and I figured $1.50 was a fine price to replace it.) It rang up $1.49 and the 50% came off that too, so that was a better deal than I thought it would be.
I bought two tins of Old Bay seafood seasoning for $1.25 each. Husband bought a couple bags of Snack Artist pistachios – 12oz. bags are $3 after discount.
After that, my aunt called to advise being careful with the frozen food, as she was at LITH last night and saw a lot of frozen goods “abandoned” by shoppers throughout the store. If these were put back in the freezer cases, it’s possible they were unrefrigerated for an unknown period of time…!
I feel okay about the pastries, and as I write this, we’re already eating the Bao buns for lunch. (Yum! Still delicious even though they’re expired.) That’s about it.
Oh, and Lake in the Hills WAS definitely still accepting coupons today.

Jill, I loved reading this, but I loved even more the fact that I did not go. When I first started couponing, I was so frantic about getting the deals. Now that I am comfortable with my stock, a little older, and wanting to avoid crowds, it was so nice sitting here reading this, rejoicing that all of you who went got such good bargains. I truly hope that some people who are out of work and are low income were able to take advantage of this sale. I know you give lots away, and I’m so glad Dominick’s had this sale. It’s nice not to be so frantic about deals anymore.

As I read all the only spent $200 or only spent whatever–thought of those losing their jobs over this and those with no extra cash. Certainly hope those who have a giant stockpile did not just stockpile more if not truly needed. Nice if one helps the food pantries now, but remember them in March when it is not the season of giving. I was truly hoping someone would buy LITH or CL Dominick’s and not have empty stores. I want a Hyvee or a Mariano’s.
