A colleague of mine sent over an interesting story that aired on the news in Atlanta last night. The manager of a Kroger store refused to accept coupons from a woman buying 20 bottles of body wash, saying she was a “habitual coupon user:”
Khadijah Herring says she got hooked on clipping coupons after watching one of those TV shows about it. But one grocery store says there is a limit when it comes to how you use those coupons…Friday morning at a Kroger near her home where she says the manager refused her clippings at checkout.
“He walks up to me and his only words are I’m not taking those,” said shopper Khadijah Herring. Herring asked him why and she says the manager replied, “because you’re a habitual coupon user.”
Without knowing all of the details, it’s difficult to say what happened here exactly — but the story also notes that Kroger “reserves the right to limit quantities.”

My heart goes out to this woman. With a family of 10 the 20 bottles which SOUNDS extreme is really a 2 month supply. Habitual coupon user? Since when is it a crime to save money? Sorry, this manager needs to be put through some serious customer service training and a class with Jill so that he GETS IT.

Almost 1,500 Kroger shoppers are boycotting Kroger after Kroger promoted the TLC EC show and ended doubles in Houston. Now most all Kroger stores are limiting coupons severely after promoting the show allowing participants to waive the coupon policy rules.
Will Kroger roll NO DOUBLES out nationwide?? Bad customer service and treating coupon customers as second class citizens is EXTREMELY wrong – yet Kroger heavily promoted the TLC EXTREME Couponing Show and gained almost ONE MILLION new visitors in website traffic. Since April, when Kroger ended Double-triple coupons for Houston to “TEST” this new policy – thousands of posts to Kroger’s facebook wall have gone unanswered.
Kroger promoted the TLC Extreme Couponing show which supports unethical couponing. You can not duplicate the transactions of 1000 products with coupons as demonstrated on this show – the TLC spokesperson said the show was never meant to teach but only show behavior. Why would Mr. Dillon refuse to go on the reality show UNDERCOVER Boss because he did not want to LIE to his employees but it is ok to LIE to you CUSTOMERS.– that is not CUSTOMER 1st Strategy!!
Many customers are finding out at checkout that Kroger is changing coupon policies limit 1-3 coupons where previously there were no limits. How much longer is it before Kroger and ALL RETAILERs take away double coupons?? Now that Kroger created the “Perfect Storm” for coupon misuse – the customers in this weak economy with skyrocketing food prices are suffering.
Couponing as we know it is changing and not for the good. I only hope the industry is not making a cohesive decision as part of their industry collaborative associations to end affordable groceries. Many Kroger customers are now boycotting Kroger. Almost 1,500 Kroger customers now belong to Kroger Couponers on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/groups/krogercouponers and BRING BACK DOUBLES: https://bringbackdoubles.com/

Limiting quantities is VERY different from limiting coupons.
And to refuse to take coupons from one customer, while allowing all the other shoppers to use them is also a problem. perhaps a legal problem.
