The annual Jewel freezer deal is this weekend, 2/7 and 2/8! For those of you who’ve been looking to add a second freezer to your home (the best way to stockpile and save on meats and frozen foods) you won’t want to miss this!
For $149.99, you get a 5.2 cubic foot Igloo chest freezer AND $150 worth of free frozen food coupons! It’s like buying the food and getting the freezer free, or vice versa. This really is the best, most inexpensive way to get a chest freezer! Now, if you’ve taken my Super-Couponing class, you know the best way to use these coupons… Do NOT be in a hurry to redeem them right away.
Hold these coupons and wait for Buy One, Get One Free sales on frozen foods – then go get TWO of each item FREE!
When I got my freezer in 2008, of the 38 coupons included, just 6 of them did not go B1G1F through the course of the year… so I ended up getting 70 total food items (almost $300 worth of food) and the freezer for $150. Fantastic deal! Remember too that for any coupons that do not specify an item’s size, buy the largest size to maximize your value.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Are the coupons manufacturer coupons?
A: Most are. There is usually a sheet of Jewel store-brand (Culinary Circle, President’s Choice) product coupons as well. If you’re driving from out of the area just to get the freezer, it’s probably a good idea to redeem the Jewel brand products before you take the freezer home so that you don’t miss out on those savings. All of the coupons this year do have the Jewel logo on them, unlike past years’ deals.
Q: Can I keep the freezer in the garage?
A. Yes. While the instructions recommend not doing so, many of us have happily kept our freezers in the garage without issue. If it gets cold enough in the garage, the freezer’s compressor may not run as much.
For warranty purposes, most refrigerators or freezers’ manuals will state that they’re not recommended for unheated garages. Any appliance that cools is going to work harder in the summer and less hard in the winter if it’s not in a climate-controlled environment. In the summer, the compressor will run much more often, and in the winter, much less. This can be seen as a “wear and tear” thing than the even cycles it would experience year-round if it was kept in the house. More discussion on this here.
Q: Do I need to wait 24 hours before plugging it in?
A: Yes, IF you tipped it on its side or back to transport it. The coolant needs to settle back down once it’s put in a vertical position. Don’t damage your new toy by being in a hurry to fire it up. :) It’s not worth it. If you transported it vertically from the time you loaded it until you brought it home, you’re fine.
However, you DO need to wait another 24 hours from the time it was plugged in until you fill it with food. The thermostat needs to cool the freezer fully to freezing, which it cannot do if the freezer is filled with food.
Q: Is a manual defrost better than a frost-free?
For long-term food storage, yes. A frost-free freezer keeps itself free of frost by sending warm air periodically around the inside perimeter of the freezer. This is tough on meats and also causes ice cream to grow ice “crystals” on top from the constant cycles of warming and cooling. With a manual defrost, this does not happen — I’ve kept ice cream in my freezer for over a year, and when opened, it’s as perfect as it was the day it was purchased.
Q: How often does it need to be defrosted?
Not too often. Mine will be two this year and I haven’t defrosted it yet! The freezer does come with a small scoop to “scrape” frost off with, but I haven’t used that yet either. I do keep my freezer pretty packed though :)
Q: How much electricity does it use?
Estimated energy costs are about $30/year to run the freezer.
Q: Do you have any tips on keeping the freezer organized and knowing what’s inside?
I keep a magnetic, wipe-off messageboard stuck to the lid, and I can easily make notes when I add or remove food.
Q: Where can I get a copy of the ad shown above?
The ad is on the cover of the current Jewel Spotlight, a free flyer available in the store on the wire racks with the other Jewel sales flyers. It’s also on the cover of the 2/7 Jewel flyer.

Hi Jill, Just wondering, do I just go and buy the freezer from Jewel, and the coupons come with it? As you can see Iam very new at this couponing.
dguags says
I have been watching for this ad, and I saw nothing in yesterday’s Jewel ad about it. I’ve asked a few other people in other areas, and they haven’t seen it in the ads either. Is this for ALL Jewels, or only certain ones? Where did other people see the ad above?
Thanks!

My Jewel let me go ahead and purchase my freezer for the sale price today (Friday). I don’t know if they are all allowing the early purchase, but I thought I would let you all know!

Something to think about! The lady that works with me is looking for a new Freezer! She worte me a check for $75.00 & I will pay $75.00 She gets the freezer & I get the coupons! Win Win. I have a freezer & did not need another one.
OMG, I just called my Jewel in Streamwood & they will hold one for me until Sunday night! I will pick it up early Sunday morning of course but how great is that!
cschelthoff says
I just came back from Jewel and asked about early sales of the freezer. The store manager said that only those stores getting 50 or more freezers were authorized to do so. FIFTY!? He said that some stores are getting between 50 and 75; our puny store in Lisle got 22 (already stored in the back room). Lisle will not set them out until Sunday, don’t know about other stores. This is certainly an improvement in numbers from prior years.
luv2Q says
Jill, just wanted to say “Thanks!” early for all your help with the freezer deal. Even if I don’t get one! =)
drlkm5 says
Which Jewel are you getting them at early??? What city??? Thanks!!!
PatK says
on the Qs. It is May 31, this year, so you basically have four months to watch for these items to go BOGO.
In the past, we have had until the end of the year.
onceuponacoupon says
At the Jewel in Schaumburg, Schaumburg and Barrington Rd. I also got the coupons but was told they’re not valid until Sunday. I used a $10 off a purchase of $110 or more coupon too. :)
bearlady110 says
I got my freezer! Whoo hoo! I got it at the Algonquin and Randall Road Jewel for $169.99 with $150 in coupons. The only downside was that the coupons expire May 31st 2010 so not as much time to use BOGO.

Got mine this morning at the Spring Grove Jewel. The store manager said I could buy it this AM for regular price and she would give me the coupons. It ended up ringing up at the sale price already so I got it for $149 and got the coupons!!! SCORE :)
irishpolock23 says
Bought mine this morning, hassle free at the Algonquin/Randall store and got the coupon book. I used a $5.00 Q, so paid $15.00 more than the sale price, but figure it’s worth it because the man helping me out to my car said it will be a frenzy in the morning and will definitely run out in a couple of hours. Thanks everyone for the heads up!
kmiroballi says
Just reserved mine at the store in Hickory Hills! As long as I pick it up by 12pm tomorrow, they will guarantee to hold mine for me! So excited!
jenjen348 says
Anyone coupon vets out there get freezers at the Gurnee Jewel in the past? CS was not really helpful about answering questions…I just know that the Osco manager will be there by 7am.
twinsplus2 says
I called the Bartlett Jewel and they would sell me the freezer but no coupons till tomorrow, so I drove to the Jewel at Barrington and Schaumburg road and got my freezer with coupons no problem!! I am soooo excited!!!!!
PTOMOM says
Not taking anything away from the lucky ones, but it really makes me angry when they bend the rules for some and then act all high and mighty for others. I called the Spring Grove store tonight and asked if I would be able to come pick up my freezer tonight and was told they weren’t allowed to sell anymore till tomorrow, that the people who were able to must have made arrangements with the managers. I was like really? So if I was friends with a manager I could get special deals? I have waited all year for this deal! I have alot to do tomorrow… would have been nice to sleep in and have my freezer and coupons all tucked away also! Grrrrrrrr!!!!
joannjackson says
I feel your pain PTO MOM. I wasn’t able to get mine either and I work early Sunday am. I’ll be stopping by before work at 7:30am…I hope there are still some left?!
Paintedlady says
I’ve got church and other commitments later in the morning so I set my alarm for 5am and was sitting in the parking lot at quarter till. Got right in at 6 and got the first one, no problem. :o) Thank you Jill!
kgoldstein1000 says
I would like to Thank all the people who helped us at the sping grove jewel. The freezer will not fit into a focus
merry-go-round says
Jewel at 103rd and Cicero received 30. One other person and I each bought one so there are 28 awaiting homes. They gave me the Q’s and agreed to hold it until tomorrow eve for pickup. At this store, the Osco manager is in charge of the sale. He told me yesterday that there was no problem with storing for later pickup.

FREEZER WEEK: If you got your freezer this week, the Baldwin ice cream is already B1G1F through Feb. 13 – go get 2 FREE…

Thanks Jill. We are so excited that we were able to pick ours up at this AM. Thanks for making this a real Super, Super Bowl Sunday!

But my sister sre isn’t! She was SUPER nice and bought mine for me with cash I left for her. THANK YOU SIS! BTW, she got one too, so they were super nice about helping her get both of them into the back of her big SUV. :o)

Jewel in Grayslake opened at 6am. I just got back with mine and was number 10. No line and they still have some. They have 3 displayed in front by the restrooms and the rest are stored in back. Manager has someone bring it out to your car and help load it. Been waiting for this deal. Thanks Jill!
mamagatz says
We got our freezer today. Yesterday I called and it was $169 with no coupons, so we put one on hold for today.
The small book is way better than the envelope of loose q’s last year, but everyone should notice right away that all of them expire 5/31/2010. A far cry from one year+ on the last freezer deal 2009. I just noticed you included the expiration dates on the list below.
We are selling the new freezer!
Happy Sunday!

The Jewel brand items are free but they do not tell you what size. I bought the largest size they carried & it was all free! Don’t be afraid to buy (Well Get) the largest package of each item! I bought all the Jewel stuff & saved $56.16. I still have the Nut cone & scooper left to get. They did not have those in stock.
Not a bad deal considering I sold the freezer for $75.00. Found a $8.00 & $10.00 coupon Friday night.
soapboxtray says
Thanks so much Jill for all the information on this, the listing of the coupons and everyone posting where they got them and how many etc. Wauconda was sold out quickly after 6am. I couldn’t get there until after church so called Fox Lake, they said they had 30 left. Went up there and someone made a mistake they had 10 when I called and 2 when I got mine rang up. The lucky lady behind me got the last one there. The guys at Fox Lake Jewel were awesome helping everyone loading them into their cars, trucks and vans. There were 4 being loaded along with mine. I really didn’t realize what a great deal this was until I can actually see the coupons in my hand :-) Thanks again!

Just left the Plainfield Jewel (Rt. 59 & 135th street) and they had 6 in the back by the dairy cases. Maybe more in the backroom? We’re not too far away from Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Naperville, and Joliet (parts). Hope everyone who wants one gets one!
kari669 says
I got mine at Grayslake Jewel this morning at 7:30 am. She told me they only had 7 left out of I think 30. Hope everyone got one!
sandibrown says
My Jewel on Roosevelt Road in Oak Park has a bunch of them left…I picked mine up at 8am this morning and I was only the second person to get one. Surprising because this store is usually not well stocked. But there are about 10 of them left as of 8:30pm Feb 7 – I believe this store closes at 11pm tho. Good luck!
brcm1220 says
I thought I would just let everyone know that the Minooka Jewel still has freezers. Last night they had at least 10 left.

I just bought my freezer, last year I started couponing right after the freezer deal. I really needed more freezer space. I hope someone posts the freezer coupon match ups.

I was wondering with anyone who got a new freezer, does yours have a removeable plug for the drain hole on the inside bottom left corner(not outside hole)? Mine does not appear to have a removeable plug, just a hard plastic piece built around the hole so I was wondering if it is missing from my unit.
