What you need to know:
- Not all of the participating gas stations are on the website lists — there are more stations in the program.
- Ask your local Jewel’s service counter staff where the closest participating station is
- If you requested your new Jewel card online, you probably got an “old” Preferred card that may not work at the pump
Jewel recently began their Fuel Rewards program, earning you .05 off per gallon at a participating gas stations. When the program rolled out a few weeks ago, the information that Jewel sent over for me to post encouraged people to sign up online for the new card versus getting it in the store — and then, the new card would be sent in the mail. (I’m honestly not sure why they wanted to do things this way, as on the first day of the program, you could also get the new card in-store.) When I signed up online, I printed a temporary card, which I’ve been using for a few weeks to accumulate fuel points.
On Friday, my “new” Jewel card came, and this is what it looks like:
Many blog readers reported getting identical, old-style Jewel cards in the mail on Friday too. Over the weekend, reports began to pour in of these cards not working at the pump. And, as people started looking at the public lists of participating gas stations posted on the Fuel Rewards site and Jewel’s site, we noticed that the participating stations are pretty spread out. For where I live, it shows the closest station being nine miles away in Woodstock, and the next closest being 21 miles away in Richmond..! While I’m up in Woodstock at times, that’s still a hike to use the fuel rewards.
When I went to my local Jewel (Huntley,) the staff at the service counter said they’d been reading people’s reports on the blog about there not being enough gas stations in their area. They said “Jill, don’t panic! You can use the rewards right up the street from here!” I said “What?” And indeed, they told me that the Mobil station at Rt. 47 and Mill Street in Huntley is participating in Fuel Rewards!
I said “That is GREAT… but how is the rest of the public supposed to know that when they’re not on either list of participating stations?” They said to encourage people to ASK the service counter at your local Jewel where the closest participating fuel station is.
So today I headed over to this Huntley Mobil location to try to use my Fuel Rewards card.
The pumps indeed have stickers and signage noting that this Mobil is participating in Fuel Rewards (great!)
I put my “new” Jewel Preferred card in the slot, and…
It didn’t work. I went inside to see the cashier, and he said that they could manually apply the rewards inside after I filled up, but I could not pay at the pump to do this. I went back outside, filled up my tank:
Ouch. My .55/gallon rewards that I accrued would really be nice to use!
And, once inside, the cashier entered my card number into the register, applied the rewards, and I enjoyed $11.00 off my bill.
I’m still trying to find out for you guys how we can get the right cards though that will work at the pump. My Jewel suggested that if I had found some way to get the existing fuel rewards off my card, I could simply dump this Preferred card, sign up for a Rewards card at the store, and use that one from now on. Now that this card is empty, that’s what I may do.
Another reader wrote that she was told that if your “new” Preferred card that came in the mail has a bar code on the back side that it will work at the pump. My new card does not have one:
In short – if you got a Preferred card in the mail, it is still accruing points and you can still use those points at the gas station — but you may have to go inside to do it.

The new card looks just like the one shown under this article, look at the sign above the pump. The new card is green with an orange on the left side and says Jewel-Osco Rewards on red on the front. There is a bar code on the backside.
I got my card in the store since the Jewel website was down when I was trying to get it. (Good thing). As far as the gas stations, you need to go to the Fuel Rewards Network website (www.fuelrewards.com). To look at the nearest gas station, you do not need to create a logging ID, but if you want to check the status of your rewards, you are better off on doing it.
Something to remember, if you gas up and use 5 gallons, the rewards dissapear until you start accumulating again. When I got the card the girls told me that if you use 5 today, you can use the rest later as long as you do it before they expire. However, that is not true. I have a small car, 13 gallons, so I might have to wait until I have 1 gal left to gas up.

I just received a response from Jewel on this. Jewel has figured out what the problem was, and if you got a Preferred card instead of a Rewards card, they’re sending new ones:
“We’re automatically sending new ones. Customers won’t have to do anything, if they were sent the wrong card the new one will be sent out as soon as we can get them printed.”

Like alot of people received the old looking preferred customer card. My question is I ended up registering on FRN website and put in old Jewel card # not knowing if that is what I was suppose to do but do I have to put in the new # once Jewel sends out the new cards or will they automatically do that?

The new preferred cards, even with the magnetic strip, won’t work at the pump. I must have had an uninformed(or just lazy!)attendant because he said I needed the new card to get the rewards and he could not manually key in my number from the old (new!) preferred card to get the rewards.
Got the new card today at the Jewel counter, and was told that my old rewards should be loaded onto the new card.
Called the customer service number 877-932-7948 because I just didn’t buy it. The customer service attendant told me:
The stores do NOT have the capability at this time to transfer your old rewards to your new card.
The receipts are NOT printing out the total rewards with expiration dates yet. They are working on this.
He was able to transfer my old points onto my new card but I did have to ask and make sure he looked up my old account (which he could do with just my phone number).
If you want to see how much you have off a tank of gas, you have to go to myfuelrewards.com and sign up for an account, then put in your new rewards card number. It pops right up.
It took about 10 minutes on the phone, but it was worth the effort as I now have 65 cents off my next fillup.
Hope this helps!!!!

The gas rewards program we have in our area allows for up to 35 gallons and our cars have 13 and 16 gallon gas tanks. I’ve had 2 cashiers at the stations tell us to bring both cars and as long as it is under 35 gallons and in one transaction it will work.
Our cars have gas tanks on opposite sides so one car pulls up to the pump and car #2 backs up to car #1 and my husband pumps one car then just moves the hose to the other car.
Unfortunately if you are only allowed 20 gallons but at least you can maximize your savings this way.
Hope this helps!!!

I had the EXACT same thing happen. I went to Facebook to bring up the issue. They tried to look my numbers up, but then asked me to send an email to JewelOscoHelpers@supervalu.com They were very quick to respond:
Thank you for contacting us in regards to your card and we apologize for the confusion. For the Jewel Rewards card with number *********(edited out), we are showing that it is in the rewards program. It currently has a balance of .20 cents in fuel rewards on it with the next expiration date being on 7/31/2012 and it currently has 3868 Fuel Partner Points out of the 5000 points needed to earn your next .05 cents in fuel rewards. We are also showing that transactions started accruing on the card on 6/22/2012, which coincides with the beginning of our promotion. So, it seems that we do have all of your transactions being recorded and the card should work fine to be able to redeem your fuel rewards.
In regards to your second concern, the balance on your receipt only reflects what you earned in that transaction in .05 cent increments. If you do have a receipt with no earnings on it, please don’t be alarmed because as long as your card shows up on the transaction you will get your points for it. There are a couple ways that you yourself can check your balance. You can contact us at 1-877-932-7948, e-mail us (as you already have), or set up an online account at fuelrewards.com, where you can link your card up to view them online.
We hope that all of this helps and if you have any further questions or concerns, please let us know and we would be glad to help.

Well, then I asked if I would be getting a new card that looks the way it should (I even threw in that I have OCD and this will bug the heck out of me every time I shop…and I do…and it will). The next email:
just wanted to drop one last quick e-mail to let you know that we have sent you a brand new card and it will be arriving within the next 4 weeks. Take care!

Glad it’s being fixed by Jewel and a new cards will arrive without me having to do anything. After registering on-line, I too got the same old Jewel card in the mail.
My store didn’t know what to do so, they just said to toss it and the issued me a new “Gas” card at the store with a new account number.
Wonder if I’ll get another one in the mail to replace the account that was tossed? 2 Jewel cards would be great to work some deals from time to time!

If SHELL does not have a Station within 3 miles of a Jewel-Osco, Fuel Rewards Network (Excentus) will work to find another redemption center for My Jewel Rewards.
The Huntley Mobil location is scheduled to be converted to SHELL Station in the fall.

Just wanted to let you know my experience with this latest Jewel card issue. I have a very old Jewel card. I tried to register it online but it said that registration wasn’t available for this type of card. Ugh. So I emailed Jewel c.s. (JewelOscoHelpers@supervalu.com) and got a response VERY quickly today. They were able to look up my account, fix a few things and now they are issuing my new cards. Let’s hope they work. I was just wanting to let you all know that it seems like the c.s. department is really trying to remedy these issues. :)

Saturday Morning I went to purchase gas at a participating Shell Station. They had pictures of the cards out, and the guy inside at the register even had on a green shirt all about the new Jewel card.
I went in and told him that all I had was my paper temporary card and asked how to proceed. He said I could pay up front and he could scan the card. So, that’s what I did. We heard the card beep, so we both assumed that it worked. Then I went to the pump. Guess what? Nope.
So, now I have filled my tank and I have points taht will expire in 1 week. I drive a very fuel efficient vehicle and don’t drive far to work each day. So, I wrote to jewel about my continued frustration with the program.
I received an email back telling me that they were sorry for all of the trouble and not to worry. If I can’t redeem my points by the time my new card arrives all I have to do is let them know and they can put my points right back on my account.
