Hunger continues to be a problem in our country, particularly the issue of childhood hunger. One in five children in America live in households without consistent access to food. My readers know that I’m very passionate about supporting our local food pantries — I’ve long believed that no matter what you’re going through in your life, you deserve to eat.
We are very fortunate that in our home, there’s never a question that there will be food on the table at each meal. My children really do take for granted that there’s always food in our house (and the way I shop, there certainly is plenty.) I’ve always involved my children in our family’s continued efforts to donate to and volunteer at our local foot pantry too. I want them to understand that even the small things we do to help others in need can make an impact in others’ lives.
For the month of September, Jewel-Osco is supporting the national Hunger Is initiative to aid childhood hunger relief efforts in America. According to their research, three out of five Kindergarten through 8th-grade teachers report regularly seeing their students come to school hungry. It’s estimated that 10 million children are affected, and nearly half of them aren’t able to receive a free or reduced-cost breakfast at school.
In its partnership with Jewel-Osco, Hunger Is is focusing on expanding breakfast programs to provide children with a healthy start to their day. Their slogan is, “Make Breakfast Happen So Kids Can Be Hungry For More.” For every participating item you buy, Jewel-Osco will donate .10 to this cause in your local market area through Jewel’s 501(c)3 Foundation. Jewel-Osco and its family of companies have pledged up to $1 million nationally toward this cause.
There are many brands and products participating in this initiative too, and they’ll be tagged in the aisles at Jewel all month long, making it easy for your purchases to help feed children in need.

I headed to Jewel-Osco this morning to do some grocery shopping, and I picked up a few items that are part of the Hunger Is campaign — things I was going to buy anyway. It’s nice to know that our purchases are going to help childhood hunger relief efforts locally all month long.
Jewel-Osco’s Hunger Is campaign will be led by the Albertsons Foundation and the Entertainment Industry Foundation who will manage the local distribution of funds. Learn more about them at this link. This program is designed to raise awareness and funds to improve healthy outcomes for hungry children and their families, specifically focusing on expanding breakfast programs, and it runs through September 30, 2016.

I’m happy to see Jewel doing this. I would much rather see them do programs like these instead of those awful Monopoly pieces which must cost money to produce and all those pieces of paper are so wasteful.
