But throughout the day, I’ve been receiving reports from readers that Jewel has quietly added a $25 minimum purchase requirement to buying a turkey at .49/lb — something that’s nowhere in the ad.
I bought my turkey this past Sunday at Jewel, and there was no minimum purchase requirement before today. So, what happened?
Here are some notes from current Jewel employees, who wrote to shed some light on the turkey sale:
The manager of our store got a call yesterday from corporate about the number of turkeys that we were selling. They wanted to know if we were really limiting the turkeys to 1 per customer because we were going through WAY more than expected. The store director said that it was not a very friendly conversation and were told that they would call back with a solution because we were losing a ton of money. We purchase these turkeys at $1.09/lb., and with no minimum a lot of people were coming in just to purchase the .49 turkeys and nothing else. Plus, they were coming in with multiple people each buying one or several trips in a day. I am assuming that the same thing happened everywhere.
So yes, basically the company is once again more concerned with making money than making customers happy… something that we have seen a lot of lately. We are including the price of the turkey in the $25 and including any items that are not stamps, lottery, or service desk stuff so really it’s not too bad because most are around $10 anyway.
The signs that we were given to post all say that the $25 limit was accidentally left off of the ad otherwise they are $1.09/lb and that were were not to make ANY exceptions.
Funny that this was “accidentally left off of the ad” when the same sale & ad wording have been running in Jewel’s ads for three weeks now. And another:
I’m a Jewel cashier. We are running out of turkeys. .49 is a great price and everyone knows it. Our store has been out of Jennie O for days and substituting Butterballs which cost us even more. We got signs today to put at the registers saying $25 minimum purchase. I get that Jewel is losing money on this but after the Bears shirt promo we should not be changing a sale in the middle of it.

I’m sure Jewel’s facebook page is being filled but might also be worth a call or form fillout to-

Are Walmart and other price matching stores matching Jewel’s printed ad and matching the deal without the $25 that you only run into when inside Jewel’s store?

Luckily I have a lot of P&G tissues to use while becoming more frustrated with Jewel. I hadn’t picked up any turkeys cause I had a freezer full of butter braids until yesterday. Another case day late dollar short.

Must be someone with no experience in the grocery business. And no knowledge of the coupon community!

I heard a Jewel ad on the radio this morning regarding the sale on turkeys. The ad noted, coupons are no longer needed. But I was waiting for the condition of the minimum purchase requirement…. Sounded like a good ad.

The Jewel in Orland Park (Wolf Road) is not allowing the turkey price to be included in the $25 grocery purchase. I was told that I had to buy $25 in groceries not including the price of the turkey. I’m not complaining — it was still a good deal.

I feel that the store is using the ad as a smoke screen here. The real issue here to me is the price tags on the turkeys. The price tag on the turkeys are clearly marked 0.49$/pound and for a certain price … Lets say $8.21. There is nothing on the tag saying $8.21 unless you don’t buy a $25 purchase then it is $18. I am unsure on how they are allowed to change that price at the point of sale on me like dat. I pick up the turkey with the expectation of paying the price that is on the tag, not some arbitrary price that the company picks cuz they dont think I spent enough. To me, it is dishonest labeling of their products.
I would like to say that the signs posted at the jewel I shop at do not mention an alternative price. They mention that there was an error in the ad and they want you to buy a 25$ purchase. .. But even if they did, they should not be labeling these turkeys a price that they do not plan on charging me. They shouldn’t be allowed to label the turkeys price tag one price and change it to another at the cashirs station.
