Jewel-Osco shoppers on Facebook are upset about a change to Jewel’s “10% off on Chicago Bears Game Day” promo.
At the start of the Bears’ season, Jewel announced the new Game Day offer in their ad, stating “Wear your Chicago Bears Jersey or one of the Bears shirts we sell, on any 2013 Bears football game day when you shop at Jewel-Osco and we’ll take 10% off your grocery bill!” The ad went on to state, “Need Bears gear? We’ve got you covered! Come check out our apparel selection.”
Well, today’s another Bears game day, and once again, Jewel’s Facebook wall has erupted with complaints from shoppers. Wouldn’t you be upset if you bought a Bears shirt at Jewel, knowing that the ad stated that shirt qualified for the 10% grocery discount — then were turned down at the register? That’s exactly what’s happening again today:
(Special thanks to Rachel for sending a photo of the Jewel ad over for this story.)

I would return the “defective” t-shirts for a refund. That might send a message.

When they did this same promo for the Blackhawks they gave the discount if you wore ANYTHING Blackhawks, pins, hats, shirts. Really bad move Jewel.

I looked at my last 10 grocery receipts and 9 of them are from Meijer. If you would of looked at my receipts last year it probably would of been 5x’s at Jewel, 3 at Dominick’s and 2 at Meijer.

I guess we can always contact the State Attorney office. They are really efficient and quick to jump on issues like this. I had done it in the past against a big pharmacy retailer for not honoring their ad. It was solved right away. But here is another reason of why now, I love Meijer more than ever.

I was at CL Jewel on Friday with my Bears coat on. The checker complimented me, then said you should wear that on Sunday for the discount! I said I thought it was only jerseys now? She said no, a hat or anything! So….who knows???? Each store doing their own thing?

Coupons in the News has a story about Jewel changing its rules on the Bears game day discount:

One tidbit:
“If there is a customer that expresses concern, the Store Director is always willing to take care of our shoppers and honor the promotion’s previous guidelines,” Sperling offered.
So if you acquiesce to Jewel’s rules change, you don’t get a discount – but if you complain loudly enough, then you’ll get it? That has the potential to make Jewel’s checkouts a particularly unpleasant place to be, come Sunday. In the end, Sperling said, “the Store Directors can use their discretion as to satisfy specific customer requests.”
