The Chicago Tribune has a new article about Jewel-Osco’s goals and direction under its new ownership. From the story:
Jewel-Osco has the lofty goal of being the finest supermarket in the country even as its new president acknowleged that Chicago’s largest grocer faces stepped up competition from newcomers. Shane Sampson, who became president of Itasca-based Jewel-Osco in early March, said Monday that he wants to make improvements in such areas as fresh food, while also emphasizing customer service and value.“It’s getting better but we’ve got a long way to go,” Sampson said. “We’re on a journey to be the finest supermarket in the United States. That’s our goal.”
…Sampson has already visited more than 100 stores – both Jewel-Osco stores and the competition – and is “constructively dissatisfied” with what he has seen so far. Sampson wants the company to become more relevant to customers in terms of the products it carries and with its ties to the community.

Mr. Sampson & his crew are at the Schaumburg Jewel right now on Wise Rd & Roselle Rd… I was there at 6:30pm tonight (4/28) after work. There are DOZENS of corporate people all over the store. Everyone working was extremely helpful. I told them they needed to work on their digital marketing better as well as inform cashiers about SavingStar and also mentioned that I shop more at the other Schaumburg Jewel since many items at that location are up to 25% less expensive… LIKE BANANAS at 37 cents a pound every day, Nestle Morsels, Sweet Baby Rays, The Checkout51 deal Trans-Ocean was a better deal at the other Jewel as well, etc… And that they needed to educate cashiers on their written coupon policies.
I liked the fact that they went around to all the regular store employees and told them they appreciated the hard work.
