Jewel-Osco suffered an “unlawful intrusion” made to try to take credit and debit card data, but the grocery chain’s owner said it has not determined that any customer information was stolen. All Jewel-Osco stores were affected, according to a spokeswoman. But “as of this time, we have not determined that any card data was stolen and there is no evidence of any misuse of our customers’ data,” she wrote in an email. “The investigation is ongoing.”The chain’s parent company said it “believes that the intrusion has been contained and is confident that its customers can safely use their credit and debit cards in its stores.”
The time frame in question may have begun June 22 at the earliest and ended July 17 at the latest, according to Jewel-Osco’s owner, a group of firms that includes Cerberus Capital Management, Kimco Realty Corp. and Klaff Realty.
The incident also affected stores in other chains owned by the group of firms, which is offering customers a year of free ID theft protection.
