It’s hard to believe that fall is right around the corner. Summer’s still in full swing, but September will bring the first day of fall. Fall is one of my favorite times of the year — I love the leaves changing, the cooler weather, and the fall holidays. Fall colors are some of my favorites! So, when At Home® stores invited me to give our living room a fall refresh on a budget, I was in.
Let me preface this by saying our living room was long overdue for an updated look. I tend to gravitate toward earthtones and neutrals with furniture and flooring, so nearly everything in this room is a shade of brown. The few throw pillows in this room date back to my college years:
Of course, while I love all things representative of my favorite rock band, I decided that this embroidered pillow could move to the basement, where it would fit in even more with our rock-and-roll-themed rec room décor. Time to give the living room a new look!
My family headed to the At Home® Schaumburg, Illinois location (1325 N. Meacham Rd.) to pick out some new home décor! At Home provided us with a $125 budget to give our living room a fall-themed makeover. At Home recommended focusing on the following ideas for a new fall look:
- Refresh with warm colors for fall: Throw pillows, wall décor, table décor, throws, or rugs
- Pillow combinations for your sofa
- Trending jewel tones: Purple, magenta, green, navy, mustard, orange
- Trending themes: Metallics, Scandinavian, farmhouse
We meandered through the many aisles of At Home, which is a fun activity in and of itself — they have so many different home décor items to choose from!
I liked the idea of focusing on jewel tones, as it would introduce some much-needed color into our living space. At Home has the largest selection of decorative pillows I’ve ever seen — this is a peek down one aisle, and there are multiple aisles like this! (You can even browse their enormous pillow selection online.)
Our family members scattered among the aisles as everyone went to pick out pillows they felt would look attractive in our living space.
As we found things we liked, we added them to our shopping cart. This gave us a chance to look at different colors together and start putting together a potential look and feel for this project. As we experimented with different shapes, sizes and colors of pillows, a color palette began to emerge.
We continued adding and removing pillows from the cart until we ended up with six that we really liked. Four of the pillows feature brass accents, and we liked the idea of mixing some metallic elements into the room.
After we settled on the pillows, we headed over to At Home’s expansive wall décor area. At Home has nearly every kind of artwork you can think of — everything from framed pop-culture and movie posters to large wall canvases to metal wall art. (Again, you can browse this At Home department online too.)
We have a large metal wall art piece in our bedroom that we absolutely love, and so we discussed finding a large piece that could tie the new colors together and really make the living room wall a focal point. We previously had some family photos and a framed print on this wall, but none of those things really tied the room together.
Again, everyone in the family spread out and began looking at different pieces of artwork for the wall. The two pieces shown above were both contenders for the coveted “Cataldo Couch Wall” space, but ultimately, we chose a piece that incorporated the brass tones of the brass rivets in some of our throw pillows, as well as red and green jewel tones.
We took everything home and were soon arranging pillows around the room and hammering new nails into the wall. The kids were excited to see what everything would look like once we put it together.
Here’s our formerly-dull seating area all dressed up with some new pops of fall colors!
These pillows range in price from $14.99 to $19.99 each.
This metal wall art features eight hammered metal circles welded to a grid. Half of the circles have mirrors in the center, so it reflects a lot of light off the wall too. This piece of artwork cost $29.99.
We’ve been living with our “new” living room look for a few days now, and we continue to be happy with the room’s new look! As you can see, we’re still playing with the arrangement of pillows between this couch and the other furniture in the room. I took this photo with the morning sunlight coming into the room, as the colors of everything do change in natural light versus the room’s own lighting.
One of the things I like about the wall piece is the way it ties the living room and kitchen together. Our kitchen is a soft shade of mint green, and this metal wall art has green tones that play off the green walls in the kitchen. We’re thrilled with our living room’s new ready-for-fall look from At Home!

Yes — we’re really happy with it, and as you said, it was a quick change to do too!
She’s good — yes, I can’t believe back-to-school is here again. It was just a year ago we were decorating -her- new place! She is doing well, thanks for asking! It’s such a sudden change after having her home for most of the summer. The house is quieter :(
