Hi- I went to the Northfield store today, and I really liked it. I spent under $20 today. I love their produce department. One pound bags of organic baby carrots are $1 all the time, which is cheaper than Aldi’s. I also got some portabella mushrooms which were on sale for $2.29 a pound, some bananas and some yellow potatoes which were on sale for $.39 a pound. Their bananas are $.39 all the time I also got a package of greenfield chicken sausage, which is apparently $2.50 a package all the time, and I got some bread, bagels and hot dog buns, as well as some frozen yogurt, and some fresh apple cider. Their french bread which they have on sale for $1 right now is huge loves. I am not a french bread lover, otherwise I would have bought a loaf.
The regular price on their King Arthur flour, is actually the same as the sale price at Jewel right now, which is $3.99, and their white whole wheat flour is regularly priced at $3.69. It seems like their sales are not as good as Jewel’s, but their regular prices are better.
The store was super busy today, and next time I go I think I am going to go on a weekday. They had tons of free samples today, and I finally had to pass on some of them, because I sampled too much as it was, and the majority of it was stuff loaded with fat, that I am not supposed to eat.
I just signed up on their website though, and I had all kinds of problems. I hope it is their website, and not my computer. When I tried to look up the unadvertised specials, the drop down list kept jumping around.
I can’t see myself doing all my grocery shopping there, because it is not convenient for me, but when the outdoor farmer’s market in Evanston is not open, I could see myself going there once a month. One thing I like is that you can load coupons onto your shopping card, which is really nice.
They even had a piano player there. I bought a cup of coffee while I was there, and sat down and listened to the music for a while. They have a piano player on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
I question how they can afford to keep their prices so low, with so much more help to pay than Jewel. They also have to pay the piano player. I sampled the fresh squeezed orange juice while I was there, and it was really good, and it was only $3.50 for a half gallon. Somebody was making juice the whole time I was there.
The Northfield store is right down the street from the Northfield farmer’s market, and so I hope that people continue to shop at the farmer’s market. I wish Mariano’s would have moved into the Dominick’s store on Green Bay in Evanston, but instead we are getting another Whole Foods. Hope this helps, Nancy
