Super Bowl crisis? Chicken-wings shortage looms

The story going around is that due to rising corn prices, farmers raised less chickens last year, resulting in less wings to go around. While this may be true, I doubt that supermarkets are suddenly going to stop stocking those delicious wings. In past years, we have seen wing prices go up right before the Super Bowl, so if you plan to cook and serve your own wings, it’s probably a good idea to pick them up before next Sunday rolls around, as the price may go up. The Baltimore Sun agrees:
The sky is not falling. There is not an impending chicken wing shortage, the American Chicken Council said, and wing-eating football fans will not have to worry about having enough chicken wings.
Scattered news sources have conveyed the exact opposite message. Because it’s funnier, I suppose.
But news sources apparently pounced on the follow-up statement from Bill Roenigk, chief economist and market analyst at the Washington-based chicken group. “If you’re planning to cook your own wings, I wouldn’t advise being in line at the supermarket two hours before kickoff.”
Interestingly, the Yahoo article linked above notes “Wings are also currently the highest-priced part of the chicken — the wholesale price for wings is currently about $2.11 a pound in the Northeast, the highest on record at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, up 22 cents or 12 percent from a year earlier.”
The wholesale price is $2.11..! So, anything around that is a good price benchmark for wing season. Kroger’s new ad is the only one featuring wings for the current week ahead – $2.19/lb.

35 years ago when were first married, we were invited to a bbq, bring your own meat to grill. This was waaaay before wings were popular. We stopped at the store and picked up a couple pkgs of wings for something like 60 cents. Everyone at the party was wondering what they were, we told them they were a delicacy! Ha.

I just read this release stating that two men in Georgia stole $65,000 worth of chicken wings!
It’s amazing how things spiral out of control!
