Clearance shopping at Meijer and Target

I headed to Meijer and Target today for some deal-shopping. I had several readers email that these stores’ 70-75% off toy clearances had begun. so I went out to see what I could find.

First, I hit the Algonquin Meijer. They do have some toys on clearance for 50-75% off, but mostly things for younger kids. I didn’t find anything for my boys there, but if you have very young kids, you might like this:

This Fisher Price Servin’ Surprises play kitchen table was $79.99 and is now $20. They had four of them when I was there about two hours ago. They’re very cute, and I was really tempted to get one for my nieces, but we just handed down my kids’ Little Tykes kitchen table and chairs set to them. (And, I didn’t want my sister to disown me for giving the kids another takes-up-lots-of-space toy..! Ha.) If you know a little one who likes to play kitchen, that’s a great price.

The Algonquin Meijer did have a lot of kids’ clothing on clearance. I didn’t see anything good in my price range for babies/toddlers (and by “my range,” I mean $2 to $3) but over in the boys’ department, there were quite a few long-sleeve shirts priced $1-$2.99:


They had Monsters University, Spongebob and Duck Dynasty Christmas-themed shirts for $1. All of the other shirts here were $2 and $2.99.

I also picked up these Monsters University ball caps for the boys for $3 each. (These will be Easter basket gear. I’m not kidding!)

Meijer’s Christmas aisle is also 90% off now, but it’s really picked over and there’s not a whole lot left there. If you need gutter clips for outdoor lights, I saw a bunch for .39 per box.

I picked up some groceries too (milk, Coffee-Mate, Challenge butter) and then headed over to the Algonquin Target.

When I got to Target, I found several aisles of toys priced 50% off, but only one thing priced at 70% so far — a Skylanders Mega Blox ship set that was $29.99, now $8.98. I bought it for the Skylander and Lego-lovers in the house.

I saw some adult clothing clearance racks marked 50-70% off, and I picked up three pairs of khaki pants for my husband for $7.48 per pair, down from $24.99.

I wrapped up my Target trip with a little impulse buy for myself — these Chevrolet pajama pants that were 50% off. They were $8.98, down from $17.99. Yes, I paid more for these than I did for my husband’s work pants, but this Chevy girl loves her Chevrolet gear!

  1. I’ve been getting a lot of email from people saying they can’t find any kids’ winter boots or snow pants anywhere. I did not see a single pair of kids’ snowpants or boots at either Meijer or Target. But Target has a huge display of bikinis and swimwear.

    Really, hasn’t the “seasonal creep” reached a crazy problem when it’s 0 degrees out and department stores are trying to sell swimsuits? I have readers writing to say they’re heading to Farm & Fleet, Bass Pro Shops & Cabela’s looking for winter gear because nothing is in stock elsewhere.

  3. Let’s hope my local Meijer have some nice deals. Seriously, the two stores here in Bolingbrook cling to their clearance clothing for MONTHS. There has been the same stuff on the clearance racks since before Christmas, and the price had not been reduced when I checked last week. Though last year, I did get $10 coats from Meijer for this year. No snow bibs though, which I’m frustrated with now. :P

  4. DH just stopped into the RM store after I told him about this post. They now have 9 of the Servin’ Surprises table, since we just bought one of them! However, the accessories are still only on clearance at 25% off.

  5. Bolingbrook’s Meijer (Weber and Boughton) has the table as of today at noon. There were about 6 left at $20 each.
