My new Speed Queen commercial LWN432 washing machine arrived about a week and a half ago, and I waited to post about it until I’d had some time to play with it, do (many!) loads of laundry in it, and decide if this machine is everything that I hoped it would be.
It is. I absolutely love my new Speed Queen. This machine does exactly what I hoped it would do — it washes clothes, and it washes them well.
It’s not fancy, and it has zero electronics. It’s got switches and a mechanical timer, an all-metal transmission, and guess what else — it washes clothes and gets them clean! More accurately, it washes clothes the way our old top-loader used to. It washes clothes the way your parents’ old washing machine used to (or in the case of my parents’ machine, still does.)
Things I already love about this machine:
- 35-minute wash loads! My old Kenmore’s heavy-duty cycle took 1 hour, 50 minutes, and still didn’t get clothes clean.
- No lid lock! I can open the lid and add things whenever I want, or just peek inside to see how clean the laundry is getting.
- Plenty of water and washing action! This machine agitates, circulates, and rolls the clothing through the machine as it washes.
I’m so happy, and I finally realize just what a dismal job our old Kenmore front-loader washer really was doing. When I was doing laundry by hand with a washboard for the past few weeks, I was quite shocked to see just how much dirt was coming out of our laundry — even things that shouldn’t have had that much dirt in them, like bath towels and pool towels. If scrubbing by hand was getting our laundry cleaner, I could only imagine what an effective washing machine could do.
Everyone in the house, from my youngest up to my husband, has commented on how clean our laundry feels and smells since we started washing everything in this Speed Queen. I haven’t changed detergents, but it is especially noticeable with our towels. They never, never smelled clean, no matter what we did. With the old washer, towels always smelled musty, even though I used to add water by the bucketful to our former front-loader machine hoping it would make a difference. (It didn’t)
I would wholeheartedly recommend this particular Speed Queen LWN432 commercial top-loader washing machine to anyone who wants a traditional, back-to-basics toploading washer. It’s low on frills and features, but it does exactly what it’s supposed to do: Washes clothes effectively, quickly, and thoroughly. Honestly, I should have replaced my front-loader Kenmore years ago!
A bunch of readers have emailed asking for updates on my new washing machine, so here’s a little more info. I decided several years ago that my next machine would be a Speed Queen, based on the high satisfaction of owner reviews I’d read and how robust the machines are — Speed Queen’s own website says their machines are built to last 25 years.
However, if you are reading this and considering purchasing a new Speed Queen, here are some things I learned prior to purchasing mine:
- Speed Queen drastically redesigned their residential washing machines for 2018. The new models have an agitator that is mounted to the tub and everything spins together, so the “agitator” isn’t truly agitating. The reviews of the new models have been disappointing, as without a rotating agitator, there doesn’t seem to be enough action in the wash tub to turn the clothes over and clean them:

- Watch this before you buy a Speed Queen washer (Lorain Appliance)
- Now, compare those reviews to this glowing article from 2017, just one year prior:
This American-Made Washing Machine Is So Good It’s Got a Cult Following (Time)
- The last, “good” pre-2018 model of the home Speed Queen top-loaders is the 2017 Speed Queen AWN432. If you can still find these models at a dealer, you will be getting a solid, traditional top-load agitator washer. However, these AWN models were discontinued at the end of 2017.
- If you cannot find a Speed Queen AWN432, the next best thing is an LWN432. This is the commercial-grade version of the same machine, and it’s also the model I bought.
Now, the bad news: It appears that the days are numbered for this commercial Speed Queen model LWN432 too. As I was writing this post, I went back to the website of Abt Appliances, which is where I bought my machine from, and look what their site says now: The LWN432 is discontinued! I am still seeing these LWN commercial models on other sites though… for now. At the time of this writing in 2018, if you want one, you can still get one.
I do know that 2018 brings new regulations to further lower amount of water and electricity that washing machines can use. These water and energy reduction requirements began in the late 90s and really began kicking in during 2001, and previous tiers of standards in 2010 and 2015 requiring lower power and water usage with each tier of standards. The new 2018 standards require energy usage to drop by another 18% and water usage for top-loaders must decrease another 23%! Manufacturers are in a tough spot where they have to comply with making machines that use almost a quarter less water than the previous models and still get clothes clean.
. I researched washing machines extensively before buying this one, and the other model I was considering was the Maytag Commercial MVWP575GW. This is another commercial-grade traditional-style top loading washing machine with an agitator that uses plenty of water.
Disclaimer: I have zero experience with the Maytag. However, from what I have seen and read, it is a lots-of-water, lots-of-power machine that agitates well. In fact, Maytag has been comparing their traditional wash action to the new, 2018 Speed Queen home washers in a new ad, and it’s clear to see which machine is moving the clothing through the wash more effectively.
Several people also emailed to ask if we were replacing the dryer too. We did not — our existing Kenmore dryer is still working, so there was no reason to replace it other than to have the washer and dryer match. Both machines are in the basement, so we don’t care whether or not they match.
I hope that this helps anyone who’s been curious about new Speed Queen, as well as what other options are currently available for traditional, agitator top loader washing machines. Unfortunately, there just aren’t that many of them around anymore. I can honestly tell you that I will never, ever buy another “high-efficiency” machine again though. My new machine has no Energy Star rating. It uses water, uses power… and washes clothes like a boss.
May 7, 2019 UPDATE: Great news for Classic Speed Queen fans! Speed Queen has evidently seen the light, and they have just come out with a 2019 version of their classic agitator top-loading washer! The model number is TC5000WN and full part number is AWN632SP116TW01. Unlike the machine I purchased, this one also has a water level selector and electronic controls, but the mechanicals are identical to the old (good!) classic Speed Queens. Authorized Speed Queen dealers can order this model for you. Here is a video showing one of the new machines in action, from unboxing to first wash load.

Thanks for your articles on this, I read this one and the other one about how much you hated your old front load. Ours is 5 years old and has bad bearings. That is something I haven’t seen you write about. Most of these front load models have captive bearings so when they go, you can’t replace them. You have to replace the entire drum of the machine which is $600+. Ours groans like rocks on a chalkboard every time the drum goes around. No matter what you spend on a front load, they are all built with these captive bearings that you can’t change.
So here’s my question. We started looking at appliances when we’re out around town, J C Penney and Menards so far. At Menards I found an Amana top load that is like $350. Super cheap. You have to look inside them all because while you may see top loads in the stores, most of them have no agitator in there when you open them up! There’s just a big empty drum that throws the clothes around. The sales guy at Penneys said not to be “alarmed” that the drum won’t fill up on these top loads. So basically they throw the clothes around in a few inches of water like the front loads do.
But the Amana at Menards actually has an agitator inside. I was pretty shocked, it was the only brand in the whole store with one. Do you know anything about it? Any good? The price sure is.
Coupon Maven says
When I was researching our purchase, I did see an Amana top-loader with an agitator. I think you are talking about the Amana NTW4516FW. Indeed, it’s a cheap $300-$350 machine. I have read reviews that the identical machine is also sold as the Whirlpool WTW4816FW and Conservator VAW3584GW (never heard of that brand) but all three are made by Whirlpool, despite the different brand names.
Here’s a video worth checking out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQIuFMd_G9U — this appliance store reviews all their washers by putting them to the test, and this particular one got surprisingly high ratings! It cleans well and has traditional agitator action with a full tub of water. The reviewer shows that it is built with a lot of plastic parts though, and because of the cheap, plastic construction inside, he would not expect it to last more than 3-5 years. Still, if you’re on a budget, or are okay with that length lifespan, it got surprisingly high marks for actually getting clothes clean.
I didn’t consider this one for our household because I wanted something with a longer lifespan, and I really liked the Speed Queen’s all-metal transmission and heavyweight construction. (Hopefully it does last for us!)

Hi Jill,
I too know the disappointment that comes from owning a front load Kenmore and now ready to get this SpeedQueen LWN432 model myself. Did you have to get special/specific SpeedQueen hoses to go with it or were you able to use ones you already had? Are they all (hoses) pretty standard?
Thanks
Coupon Maven says
This machine uses standard hoses and plugs into a standard home wall outlet. Basically, it looks like a home model but has commercial-grade parts inside.
We did replace the hoses on the machine (with standard hoses) just because we had an old set on there that was from our original washing machine.

Thank you so much for all your articles on the horrible issues getting clothes actually clean with one of these he washers. I, too, wish I would have just kept and repaired my old one. I just want to thank you for all your time and research you have done..and then shared with everyone. I appreciate it immensely. Taking your recommendation and link, I am now excitedly awating my new Speed Queen LWN432. Take care. :) Karen

Karen, you’re welcome. I hope you love yours as much as I do. It’s kind of crazy that I should be so excited about a washing machine that does exactly what it’s supposed to do!
I am already thrilled with this Speed Queen though, and I hope that it gives us many happy years of service. It already had a pretty good test that our old machine never could have passed. I got a scrape on my elbow last week right in a spot where the cut always wants to break open and bleed if I move it too much. Anyway, (I’m going to get a little graphic!) I went to bed and woke up the next morning to see that the Band-Aid had fallen off, the scab had broken open while I slept, and I had blood stains and smears all over the sheets from wherever my arm moved at night.
Our old washer would -never- get bloodstains out without pre-treating, soaking, and scrubbing. I threw the sheets in the wash without pre-treating — just used Tide and did a normal warm water wash to see what would happen. When the wash cycle ended, I took the sheets outside to hang on the clothesline so I could really look at them and examine for any hints of blood stains. Not a spot! Yes, I love my new Speed Queen :)
For what it’s worth, I had another person email me privately saying “there must be other machines out there that get clothes clean.” I too believe there must be — but I was also not about to make another very expensive mistake by simply visiting an appliance store and picking something out this time around. Our old HE front loader was such a nightmare for so many reasons that I wanted to run away (screaming!) from any other HE models. I did not want to spend any more years with a poor-performing washer.
You are going to love how fast this machine finishes loads too! I feel like I am powering through laundry days now. The dryer takes longer than the washer now, which was definitely not the case with my old HE machine. :)
Crystal says
For future reference, we spit on blood stains to get them out. The enzymes in saliva break down the blood. My kids think it’s gross but it works. Although, you might have a hard time working up enough saliva to get a large amount of blood out of a sheet.
This is starting to sound like a “how to get away with murder” tutorial. 😂

We are also looking for the LWN model now. Thank you for all your detailed posts, I share your rage for these horrible he machines. We got a new he Samsung 2 months ago and I swear to you, if you put a large load of laundry in, the clothes in the middle are dry when the load is done. Not spun dry by the machine. They are dry because the machine doesn’t use enough water to even get all of the laundry wet!
After much fighting with Best Buy that machine went back. (BB said “they are all built like this now” and “do smaller loads so all the clothes get wet” which we found mega disturbing for a machine advertised as large capacity.)
If anyone is in California, this place has the best price I have seen on theSQ LWN model but they only deliver to CA: https://www.pwslaundrywest.com/i-22306121-speed-queen-top-load-washer-lwn432sp115tw04.html
Michelle says
Just so you know, spray a little hydrogen peroxide on blood stains. That’s ALL you have to do to get them out in the wash. You’ll see it foam up and start to disappear instantly.

Thank you – all these years of doing laundry, and I never knew that :)
Calibabydolly says
This is not about your new “Queen”, yet felt it appropriate to say here. I have a top load older Kenmore washer and have been just AMAZED on how well the Tide pods work to get my stuff clean. Just like you did on the blood stains, I did a little test on another stain, FRESH BLACKBERRIES! I use an old blue bath towel to lay the washed berries on before I make jam or freeze them and there is always a bunch of bold staining on that towel when I get done. (This time there were actual seeds along with the juice staining) I tossed it right in, no treating or rinsing or scrubbing, with all of my other towels in a large load and when I pulled it from dryer, poof the stains are completely gone! This washer uses lots of water, but with Tide along with my top loader with agitator it has been working like a dream on stains! I used to avoid paying big bucks for Tide, but since I watch for sales and use coupons, it is what I swear by now!

I’m going to have to try them. :) Years ago, I had tried the All pods which I got on some deal, and they just didn’t work in my old front-loader — I would find half the undissolved All pod stuck to the clothes or to the inside of the machine. Now that I have a lots-of-water top loader, I bet they will work better.
I know that the whole theory behind them is good, in that you have both powdered detergent and liquid in there. Some cleaning enzymes can only exist in powdered form because they’re activated by water, which is why powdered detergents still often beat liquid ones in some kinds of stain tests. With a pod, you’re getting the best of both worlds.
(This is also why I have used both for years, depending on how dirty a load is — I’ll toss a half a scoop of powdered detergent in my machine and then add some liquid detergent too.)
Calibabydolly says
I just looked at a (Tide) Pod and it looks like there are 3 colors of liquid in there. I have a whole stash of laundry soaps in there and the All and Oxi brand “pods” look as if they may have some powdered portion in the middle, but the newer Tide Pods seem to be all liquid. Possibly the older ones did have some powder in them? Some of my friends had complained about the pods not dissolving, just like yours did, but I was thinking they had a top load washer like mine. I bet they have front loaders now! Just to be sure mine did dissolve all the way, I have always put them in a cup and ran straight HOT water on them right as the washer fills. My husband even does it now! It only take a minute or so, but I should try to use them per instructions, lol. It says to add to drum, then clothes, then water. (it also says use 1 pod-Small/Medium, 2 pods-large & 3 pods for x-large loads!) One pod of Tide is usually all a super full load needs! They really want to sell Tide, don’t they!?
My observation was just about Tide brand in general. It is so concentrated and good, you need about 1/3 the amount of the cheaper brands. Even the Simply Tide is that good! I buy whatever is a good deal, but I swear on Tide for the quality!

Where can I get the model Jill purchased, LWN432SP115TW01? I just called Abt and they can’t get it for me. They only have the new models that have really bad reviews. The link in the blog takes me to Appliancesconnection.com. They do show this model in stock, but several web sites, including Better Business Bureau, have tons of terrible reviews about their experiences with them, including far too long of a wait to receive their products, lots of damaged products and customer service that doesn’t help and doesn’t care. You’re welcome! I think you will love this machine. Everyone in the house LOVES ours. I really should just have bit the bullet years ago as it is such a vast difference in how well it cleans. It’s shocking.
Here’s a real-life example from this week: I have a canvas tote bag that I used to keep in the car to hold extra hats and gloves in the winter. Last year, the bag fell on the floor and was stepped on by the kids’ muddy boots. Mud plus white canvas is not a good equation.
I put it in our old Kenmore front-loader, and it came out somewhat clean, but it had what I thought was a permanent brown stain across the bottom. Winter passed, and I put the bag back in our coat closet.
I found the same bag again last week when the kids were looking for their stretchy gloves in the closet. I threw that bag in the Speed Queen with no special treatment or stain treaters — just my usual detergent. It’s white again!

Hi there! I was just curious if you still like your speed queen? It looks as if there are a few online retailers that have your model available. I’m also looking at the Maytag commercial you did. I’m so sick of crummy washers and thought I was finally going to have a great machine when I found speed queen until I started reading about their new design for 2018; so disappointing. Thank you!
Coupon Maven says
YES, I am still thoroughly loving my Speed Queen. I should have bought it YEARS ago. :) I don’t think you would go wrong with the Maytag either — it also looks like a great, old-school-style agitator machine.
Kim says
Thank you! I just can’t find anyone in my area that has either on display so it makes me nervous! Everyone just has the 2018 speed queen models.
Coupon Maven says
For what it’s worth, I never saw mine until the day it was delivered either.
If there is something specific you want to see about the machine, I’d be happy to take more photos — it’s pretty much a what-you-see-is-what-you-get appliance though.
Yes, stay away from the 2018-2019 machines. I had hoped Speed Queen would come to its senses for the new year and bring back their agitator models, but that hasn’t happened yet…
Kim says
Good to know, thanks! I just want a washer that cleans well. I’m not too concerned with the bells and whistles like all of the new machines have ;). I’m coming from a 4.7cu ft top loader, without an center agitator, so I’m worried that the machine will just be too small and I’ll be doing laundry all day long, every day, haha! I have a King size bed and have a coverlet (which I’m pretty sure won’t fit) but curious what size your normal load looks like. Thank you for all of your help and info, it’s much appreciated!
Coupon Maven says
Kim, I don’t find it “too small.” I have washed a king comforter in it, but it is a lighter weight comforter. I don’t think a big, fluffy, heavyweight one would fit as well.
My normal load is a standard sized 2-bushel laundry basket filled to the top – because this is an agitator machine, you do need to leave some room in there for the agitator and water to move things around. I consider it to be a normal-sized wash load though.
The speed is what makes a huge difference to me – even on the longest wash cycle (15 minutes agitation before first rinse – about 35 minutes total.) I don’t believe i’m doing smaller loads than I did with my front loader, as I’m using the same basket size — however, I can power through loads because it takes so much less time to wash them.
Mplumie says
Good luck with your machine I hope you don’t have problems like I do I’m waiting for my 5 repair total rebuild with my Speed Queen washer machine only 2 years old.

Thanks for your article! Does your Speed Queen commercial washer have an option to adjust water for load size?
Coupon Maven says
Unfortunately, it does not – the non-commercial consumer version of this machine does. However, they had stopped making that one, and I could not purchase one when I was ready to replace my machine last year, so this is the one I got. We do a lot of laundry though, so I always make sure it’s full before washing a load.
zOOKEEPER (aka mOM) says
The Maytag mvwp575gw commercial grade residential washer has a full tub wash and rinse for Bulky, Delicates, Mixed, and Powerwash. Normal (Eco) is a half tub wash/spray rinse for smaller loads. It also includes Presoak, Rinse/Spin, and Spin/Drain. It is NOT like Maytag/Whirlpool’s other residential washers. This one takes HE detergent, but it does not appear to be HE in any way other than the ONE Eco mode. Full loads are done just as quick on this machine as the older Speed Queens. It works well and comes with a 5-year parts and labor. I am careful not to overload it. Only time will tell if it will last–15 to 20 years would be great. I believe it is a belt drive versus a transmission on the Speed Queen–that is a concern for many. Since they are discontinuing the Speed Queen mechanical models and the design has changed for newer ones, I wonder how easy it will be to get parts for them later? Maytag uses the parts in the washer I have for several other models that are still being made. For me it is a toss up between SQ will probably last longer, but the Maytag may be easier for me to service due to availability of parts. With that said, I do prefer the dual agitator wash action on the Maytag machine versus the Speed Queen. I have not had an issues with ripping or tearing of clothes.
The other washers on the market today are junk. I do not know how DOE thinks putting cheap made, non-functioning machines into landfills quicker is more energy saving then using a little more water and electricity? I was absolutely blown away by some of the reviews where there is a few inches of water, and some of the clothes do not even get wet! I am so thankful, I watched those reviews. Saved me $$$ for sure as I had one of those washer picked out.
I appreciate your very thorough and honest review. I am still on the fence whether to grab one of these while I can since I need a dryer too now or just buy the matching dryer for mine. I wish Speed Queen would bring back the AWN432 model as the “Classic”.
Larry Bieber says
Until two weeks ago, we were members of the Speed Queen Cult. We bought s Speed Queen washer six and one half years ago and paid a premium over other washers. What sold us were the claimed reliability and the machine had dials rather than expensive electronic boards. Dials never broke we were told. Because clothes had too much water in them after the spin cycle, we called a repariman. He found there was a water leak and the outside of the tub was rusted and needed to be replaced. Further, the repairman found that we needed a new transmission assembly, a spin bracket, a timer assembly, and a dial assembly. The repairs cost more than what we paid for the washer. Our conclusion, is that the Speed Queen washer was poorly designed, used poor quality parts, and the reputation for reliability was not true. Incidentally, the three washers with the worst scores in the agitator washer section in Consumer Reports were made by Speed Queen.

Susan, this particular model does NOT have a water level adjuster, unfortunately, as it is a commercial model. The home version of this model, which has not been made for close to two years now, did have the water selector, but it is impossible to find now unless you want to look for a used one. The home model with the water selector is AWN432, but they have not been made since 2017. The LWN432 is still possible to come by.
I decided i could live without the water level selector & just wait to do loads until the machine was full.

My LG front load washer started leaking under our wood floor and we did not realize it until we walked into the laundry room and had water coming up through the grooves. I have hated my front load for years and knew my next washer was going to be a Speed Queen. Imagine my dismay when I read the reviews of the “new and improved” agitator. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do. Then while researching I ran across your article. I immediately was on the hunt for the LWN432 model. I called all the dealers in my area, except for one. They all had the new models. The one dealer I didn’t call was because their hours are M-F 9am to 5pm. I called them this morning when they opened and they had one LWN432 left. I told her, “I will pay you right now over the phone”. She didn’t have the dryer, they sold the last matching set Friday to a local business. However, being the awesome mom and pop shop they are, she said she thought she could find me one. She called me back a few minutes later and she had found me one. The matching set are being delivered tomorrow and I am beyond excited. Who would of thought I would be this excited over a washing machine and the thought of actual clean clothes again? I cannot wait to get to do laundry in my new Speed Queen.

Yes, Speed Queen has (very quietly) brought back a traditional agitator top-loader this year. It only came out at the beginning of May, just a couple weeks after you posted. I had no idea they were bringing a classic model back when I originally replied to you, & I updated this post with the new model info as soon as I had it. I have since read that the Maytag agitator model may have been stealing their market share, but the Maytag does have a lot of plastic parts. The new Speed Queen is still made with the same, all-metal transmission as the 2017-&-pre models.

Thank you so much for all of this information! I am also looking for the old style washer and found that the LWN432 Speed Queen is about the only one out there that has the old style technology. The only place I found to purchase one is from the website that you purchased yours from . However I saw a lot of negative reviews about the company and their deliveries. What was your experience with that part of your purchase and would you recommend them? Thank you so much!
Coupon Maven says
Teresa, I ordered from ABT — do they have them back in stock? I’m really surprised to hear bad reviews of Abt. They are local to Chicagoland and have a stellar reputation around here. My delivery process was absolutely painless, and the guys who brought it in and set it up were extremely professional.

We needed a new washer quickly and I did my research. Our old washer was an unreliable 2008 Whirlpool and we were through with Whirlpool. I wanted to buy locally. The decision came down to the 2019 Speed QueenTR5000 vs the commercial Maytag MVWP575GW. I learned online that the 2019 Speed Queen agitator movement had been tweaked vs the 2018 when on the heavy-duty setting. The re-engineered movement is a shorter rotation arc and therefore more frequent rotation. Clothes are moved more over the course of the cycle. With this factored in, I also considered the SQ 1-hp motor vs Maytag’s 1/2-hp and the resultant higher spin cycle rpm. Apparently, SQ build quality wasn’t compromised in the 2018 revision, though the 2018 agitator movement was a problem and Alliance/SQ had to do something. If the 2019 agitator movement tweaking hadn’t been done that would have tipped the scale to Maytag. My decision was that close. I couldn’t find a commercial Maytag on the floor of any local store, though I could order one through the store. I admit that this weighed the decision to go with the SQ. It has been delivered and my wife says it seems to be functioning well. However, we’re not fully satisfied with post-sale administration. An owner’s manual isn’t included in the machine upon delivery, but there is a pre-paid post card in the plastic pack for ordering one. Then my wife tried to register our new washer on the Alliance/SQ website. It isn’t as user-friendly as the washer. She made an error in entering the city of the dealer (a city near but different than ours) and the site wouldn’t let her make the correction after 3 tries. As I’d left on a trip after purchase but before delivery, I’ll try to take care of this by starting the registration from scratch when I’m home.

Yesterday I ordered the new SQ model TC5000AWN632SP116TW01 from my local dealer in Waxahachie, Texas (C.A. Wilson’s). They are due to get one for the store probably next week and told me I could get that one and he’d order another one. I am most anxious to receive this little jewel..priced at $1029. I have spent hours researching and ordered it after watching the online UTube video of unpacking and washing an empty load that you recommended.

Susan, I’m glad to hear that you saw that they were making these again! That’s not too much more than I paid for mine last year. Please do post back when you receive it & have used it — I hope you enjoy it as much as I do mine. :)

Can’t wait. I understand it is back to the old type transmission and doesn’t have a lid lock. I was also told that you can either let it”sense” the amount of water needed, or you can do a full fill. I will be a full fill because I am so tired of not having enough water! The woman at SQ told me there is approx 5 gallons saved by letting it “sense” itself. I guess I will be saving water by using less in the yard! So grateful for your remarks, as there still is nothing on the SQ website about this model. She said they are doing it deliberately because they do not intend to do a production push and are concerned about too many rush orders. Veery interesting..
Coupon Maven says
Yes, everything I’ve read has said the same (all metal transmission, no lid lock.) I LOVE being able to open the lid and add things if I want to.
I have been really curious why Speed Queen hasn’t put anything on their website about this! I learned of it from another laundry forum: https://www.automaticwasher.org/cgi-bin/TD/TD-VIEWTHREAD.cgi?79093_32
It made me wonder if they don’t want to admit that their 2018 agi-tub models are as bad as the reviews say. Yes, what they told you IS very interesting..!
I found another video of the 2019 agitator Speed Queen model here — https://youtu.be/0fDF2Z40kMQ
It was just posted yesterday and has almost 2000 views..!
The biggest difference I see in this one vs. the 2017 model is that they are now using an electronic timer vs. mechanical (mine physically clicks around to wind the spring when you select the cycle.) In the grand scheme of things, not a big deal as the motor looks to be the same as they were using pre-2018. The wash action looks like the classic Speed Queen we know & love.
susan lichtenwalter says
I got the new washer on Wednesday and have washed 6 loads now. I used deep fill on the load of 2 king sheets and 6 pillowcases, and the load of 4 very large beefy towel and 6 washcloths and 2 hand towels. On the other loads I let it do its own thing on the “Eco cycle”. The last four loads were dirty jeans (4 pair), 4 doggie peepads, mixed shirts and pajamas (not badly soiled, and 1 blanket (queen). All loads got clean the first time and I noted that after the spin at the end, all garments etc were spun up the entire walls of the tub, unlike my Maytag which spun them into the bottom sides of the tub. The tub spins really fast, removing much more water than the Maytag. The deep fill cycle ran about 40 minutes as it did the “soak”, before washing the load. The “Ecocycle” only takes 30 minutes. It is noisier than the Maytag..but does not vibrate like the Maytag. I am thrilled with my new toy, and just pray that by changing out the timer to an electronic one, they know what they are doing! This machine TC5000-AWN632SP116TW01 has 3 year parts and labor as opposed to the TR5000, which had 5 year parts and labor in the home.I am still trying to get a manual from Speed Queen, as they said I am the first to ask for one as it’s so new.
Coupon Maven says
How wonderful. I’m SO glad you are happy with it. I would not worry about the electronics — SQ has actually offered both options for quite a few years now (mechanical and electronic) so I would think both are fine. Electronic controls aren’t a new offering for them. They simply discontinued the mechanical timer for this updated model. Because I am old-school in a lot of things, I chose the timer version. If it hadn’t been available, I would have ordered whatever I could get as the machines’ mechanicals are identical.
Your experience with the wash and spin cycle echoes mine — it does spin really fast and drives a lot of water out of the clothes. Mine is not exactly a quiet machine either, but I don’t mind at all. That sound means it’s doing its job! :)
It’s quite funny that they don’t even have the manuals printed up yet. It must have been a surprise when consumers started ordering these new machines before they were even listed on SQ’s website. Mine has a 5 year warranty on parts only (no labor as it is a commercial machine) but I wasn’t too worried about it. Everything I’ve read & researched says that these machines are built like tanks & will last and last. I hope that is true for both of ours.
I really appreciate the update on your new TC5000. Enjoy!

Thanks for such GREAT info.
I need to buy a washer and like everyone else are horrified at the HE washers I am seeing.
I came across the LWN432 today and was thrilled to see the ‘old school’ dial and the fact that the water always fills to the top!
Question; If i miss putting in the softener during the rinse cycle, and it cycles through to the end, can I start it over from the rinse cycle (instead of from the very beginning)?
Also, I see the new TC5000 which many are saying is the new version of the LWN. It doesn’t seem to be very similar to me because the TC 5000 does not have the dial with the timed cycles boldly displayed and also does not allow you to select the time you wish OR the ability to start over from the ‘rinse cycle’ if you missed putting in the softner (described above). Am I understanding these features correctly?
If you had to do it over, would you still get the LWN or would you get the new TC5000?
I have it narrowed down to these 2 machines and maybe the commercial Maytag and are not sure which to buy and local sales people are horrible.
Thank you for your expertise.

I’m happy to answer these questions as best I can.
>> I came across the LWN432 today… If i miss putting in the softener during the rinse cycle, and it cycles through to the end, can I start it over from the rinse cycle?
Yes. It’s a mechanical timer – you can simply turn the dial to the spot you want to start the cycle at, and it will go from there.
> Also, I see the new TC5000 which many are saying is the new version of the LWN. It doesn’t seem to be very similar to me because the TC 5000 does not have the dial with the timed cycles boldly displayed and also does not allow you to select…
Yes. The internal mechanicals of the new machine are the same as the LWN, but it as a computer-controlled panel, so to the best of my knowledge, you cannot force it to start mid-cycle. I have not played with one in person, but I have read a decent amount about it online.
> If you had to do it over, would you still get the LWN or would you get the new TC5000?
I would get the LWN that I currently have. I still LOVE it. Seriously, I get excited about doing the laundry every week with this thing. The newness hasn’t worn off at all, and the thrill of super-clean clothes never gets old :D
I also like that if the timer ever fails, it will be easy to change – I’m comfortable doing common washer and dryer repairs (I’ve had to over the years with my junky set!) and that’s not a difficult one.
I know that the LWNs are getting really difficult to find, so if my choice was the TC5000 or anything else on the market, I would certainly buy the TC5000. I believe the classic Speed Queens are still the best, most well-built and longest-lasting machines currently available for home use.
Having read reviews of the Maytag from people who have had them for a year or so, people who use them heavily are already reporting gears and other parts wearing out. The Maytag has a great, traditional agitator wash, but it has a lot of plastic parts inside. I read both the Houzz.com laundry board and AutomaticWasher.org for reviews, and sometimes the only way you find out if something will last is to read reviews a year or so after these machines come out to find out how they are doing.
Speed Queen hadn’t changed its internal assembly in years up until they discontiued the AWN/LWN series, and the new TC500s are built internally the same as the previous line. The only difference is the control panel on top – mechanical or computerized.

The SpeedQueen we bought was unfortunately the TR5000. Want to return it. Appliance store did not tell me about the TC5000 series or I would have bought it. They only had TR3000 & TR5000 on the floor, no mention of the TC. They want to charge me a restocking fee of over $200 plus delivery/pickup fee of $65.
Also when we ran the TR for the 1st time we happened to have our favorite am radio program playing. The stations were completely going haywire (no matter where in the house) to the point you could not understand it. Turns out that the machine was creating a strong radio frequency interference field. It is the electronics of the washer causing this. We prefer to keeping down our exposure to EMFs along with dirty electricity. There may be a fix by using a filter of some sort to block or neutralize this unhealthy field, am looking into it.
This brings me to a question about your LWN machine with the basic knobs. Would it be possible to turn on a radio in the AM spectrum to see if there is not the same tremendous RFI occurring with your machine? That might make the difference whether I should pursue ordering the very basic machine with no electronics. Talking to Speedqueen I understand that the warranty would be limited to 3 years parts only if I bought the LWN commercial as the home version is not available. In the meantime I am looking into a RFI remedy….
Thanks, Suzanne.
Coupon Maven says
Suzanne, we actually have an AM/FM radio on a shelf over our machine (I turn it on sometimes when I am working in there) and there is no interference on either the AM or FM band with my LWN. That said, it may be difficult to find a fully non-electronic LWN series Speed Queen now as they are discontinued. The new TC “Classic” Speed Queens are mechanically the same as the LWN, but they do have an electronic control panel.
I have never heard about this kind of interference from a washer before. :(

I almost bought a SQ washing machine in April when I bought a SQ dryer. But I wasn’t ready to shuck out all of the $$$$ for both and really needed a dryer. My 29 year old Maytag (bought in 1999 a week after I got married) pair have reached the end of their usefulness. But now I am ready to replace the washing machine and doing my homework, I am so grateful that I didn’t make that purchase in the Spring b/c the ‘redesigned’ model would be all that I could have purchased. I haven’t replaced my Maytag set b/c I didn’t want to fall victim to all of the bells and whistles and energy star and plastic motor that many of my family & friends have experienced (my sister has had 3 washing machines since 2004!!) so I have held out stumbling upon SQ back in 2015 when I was shopping for something entirely different. Your review was very, very helpful. Now if you could help me find a dishwasher with the same workhorse design as this washing machine, all would be right in my world!

Thank you – I try to write the most detailed reviews possible! We’ve now had this Speed Queen for over a year, and I can honestly say that as much joy as a washing machine can possibly bring to someone, it’s still bringing it :) I LOVE how clean and fresh our clothes are. This machine does exactly what it is supposed to do.
In fact, our adult daughter moved out a few months ago and lives an hour away from us an apartment with a front-load washing machine. She still comes home every few weeks and brings her laundry here because she thinks our machine gets it cleaner! Plus, with a 35-minute wash cycle, she can knock all her laundry out in an afternoon here versus the near 2-hour washtimes of her machine, which she has to share with other residents of her building.
As far as dishwashers: I honestly have not had to shop for one in 15 years. When we built this house, we bought a Bosch – we paid right around $1000 for it, and at the time it seemed more expensive than some of the other models we looked at. We really liked it because it is all stainless steel inside (at the time, there weren’t as many options for that) and it is a European design which dries via evaporation and not a heating element in the bottom of the machine. This means it has no “top rack only” limitations for plastics — you can put anything anywhere in it without risking damaging your dishes due to the heat of the drying process.
We bought an out-of-box floor model from the Sears Outlet when we got it — its original price was over $1500.
I have only had to repair it once, and that was due to something getting stuck in the bottom and causing it not to drain. It’s been in continuous use 3-4 times a week for the past 15 years. So, if Bosch is still making dishwashers like they used to, I would recommend them. The model we have is SHX46B06UC/14 for what it’s worth.
The other thing worth mentioning: Almost ten years ago, manufacturers of consumer dishwasher detergent removed the phosphates from their formulas. This resulted in dishes not coming out of the dishwasher as clean as they possibly could. After the change in formulas, we began using commercial Cascade dishwasher detergent, and we are still using it today in our Bosch. It’s one of those at-any-price products I will always buy because it works so well. Here’s my writeup on that: https://jillcataldo.com/phosphatedetergents/
Over the years since I originally wrote that dishwasher detergent post, I have heard from many readers who thought they had poorly-functioning dishwashers, but the dishwashers started working well again once they started using commercial detergent. Might be something to try before you go shopping for a new one!
MJ SMITH says
Jill when you bought the LWN432 model what type of warranty did the place you bought it from give you? I was under the impression that particular model was for commercial use only not residential use and warranty was for parts only -not labor. Curious what was spelled out in the warranty you received?
Thank you for clarifying.
Coupon Maven says
You are correct – it is a 5-year parts warranty, not labor, because this is a commercial machine. I bought it for the way it is constructed (heavy duty, metal parts vs. plastic) versus the warranty. If something happens to it, I’m comfortable repairing it myself — I did numerous repairs on its Kenmore predecessor (and the Kenmore dryer I still have) as well as a few on my (now very old) Westinghouse washer and dryer pair that preceded these.
If you’re at all handy, there are lots of repair instructions online too — there is nothing computerized in the LWN432, and again, from a mechanical standpoint, Speed Queens are built like tanks. Hopefully I will not need a warranty.
If you want a parts-and-labor warranty, the new 2019 Classic Speed Queen (TC5000WN) has this as it is built for the residential market, and aside from its electronic control panel, the mechanics of the machine’s operation are the same as the old AWN/LWN series.

I am fixing to buy a Speed Queen washer and dryer. I have a 2016 model AWN432SP113TW04, but I need another one for a camp. I would like to know about the water level on the LWN432SP115TW01. If there isn’t a water level selector does it fill all the way up on any washing option you select? That would be ok with me if it does. One description of this machine says low water consumption and that has made me think twice about buying this piticulair model. I have seen this on a couple different sites and I have noticed the selector knobs are different even though it has the same model number. I would prefer the all manual machine verses the TC500, which is listed as AWN632SP116TW04.
Coupon Maven says
My LWN432 does not have a water selector. It is a full fill machine, no matter what size load. (This is okay with me too – I always wait to do laundry until I have a full load.) It is by no means a low water consumption machine..! It is a 22-gallon drum that fills twice during the wash cycle. It uses a lot of water. There is an eco saver wash that is supposed to use less rinsewater (I think) but I have never once used it. I knew what I was getting when I bought this thing. :)
The TC500 is the next closest thing – same mechanics, but with electronic controls.

I am seeing two washers on Amazon with the same model number, one just like yours, another one just like yours but had another knob between the temperature selector knob and the extra rinse selector. Any information on this would help. I can’t find out why they show two with the same model number but are a little different. At least in the picture. I will be going to my closest SQ dealer very soon to get a washer and dryer. I just want one to fill all the way up with water, no lock lid, with agitator and manual knobs. My email is all lower case letters.
Coupon Maven says
That extra knob is the water level selector. My model does not have that, but the AWN432 does. They are almost exactly the same machine (these are pre-2018) models but the AWN was designed for home use and the LWN for commercial use. From what I have read, they are identically constructed aside from the water level selector.

Thank you for this great resource! As a dog mom who’s is constantly doing laundry, I swear by my Speed Queen. I would love to know what detergent you use. I’ve struggled to find ones that are not labeled “High Efficiency” for the HE machines out there (not Speed Queens) that use less duds. I want the suds! I’ve been use All Free & Clear for my sensitive skin but find that is doesn’t clean clothes very well or leave them smelling fresh so am willing to try something with perfume. Thank you in advance for your response!
Coupon Maven says
Shannon, I primarily use All and Tide. I seek out good prices on both, and both work really well in my machine. There is a Tide variety called Tide Simply Odor Defense, and this is -great- for things that don’t smell fresh. Perfumes don’t irritate anyone in our household, thankfully, but that’s what I use when I really need something freshened up. I do use an entire cap of it in my Speed Queen – I think most detergents are HE friendly now, but with the volume of water in these machines, you also need more detergent to get an effective mix of water and cleaning power.

Love and kisses :) My GE washer’s motherboard fried after 14 months; replaced and it worked for two loads before the motor died – and I’m not that clean. Went with a used Maytag 8+ years old which ran until 6 months ago, when I got a used Whirlpool from a friend. Fast forward two weeks ago when that died and I went new Whirlpool from Home Depot. Total piece of junk that even Consumer Reports only rated fair using the 3 hour heavy duty cycle (75% 1 star on Amazon). Found a Facebook seller within a few miles selling a 2016 AWN432 that had come with their house; they wanted a front loader, so I got it for $350. Returned that Whirlpool POS to Home Depot so fast I almost broke the time-space continuum . Do NOT need a washer to “sense” what I’m putting in – imo it was taking inventory (“omg, did you see how dirty her sheets were?” it whispers to the dryer).

You got it for a steal at that price! Hope you have many happy years with it — that’s still a pretty new machine too!
The homeowners may regret getting rid of it, but their loss is your gain! Totally agree with you on the computerized brain, etc – so not necessary. That machine has one job, and it does it well.
So happy for you (and great to see your name pop up here – it’s been too long. I miss the old blogger-convention days :)

Keep in mind that the TC5 is a 3.2 ft³ washer. Use this for comparisons…..it might be why SQ was able to get around the regulations; it’s fairly small.
Also, for anyone convinced that their HE washer is producing “clean smelling clothes”, you might be confusing the smell of detergent /left behind in the clothing/ with clean.
I wish this country would bite the bullet and attack the true cause of freshwater waste in this country (municipal pipe leaks) and back away from this nonsense that HE actually works.
It’s ultimately the water that carries the filth away from the clothing, not the surfactant.

On front is printed:
Speed Queen Commercial Heavy Duty, Super Capacity Plus, 2 Speed, Stainless Steel

Since then, the machine has stopped spinning 3 times. The belt has been replaced 8/10/18, 9/14/19 and will now be replaced again soon after 8/8/21.
Is it normal for the belt to break or loose so often?? Thanks!

Hi Jill-
I just wanted to chime in and say that I bought the Maytag version about 3 years ago…only because I could not find the speed queen version you had bought, and I too was concerned about the agitator performance in the new SQ models.
I am happy to say that the Maytag is a dream. None of my friends believe that my washing machine finishes in 30 minutes, and that the water fills to the top & all clothes are submerged!
So…If anyone is still reading this and is torn between the SQ and the Maytag, I can happily say the Maytag has made my dream of clean clothes come true.
For the record – my last washing machine was a Maytag HE top loader without an agitator, and I was really disgusted that my clothes would come out of the washing machine DRY!
Unfortunately, due to regulations, you have no choice but to buy the commercial line of Maytag or Speed Queen if you want a machine that fills with water. Although it will cost you an additional $100 – $200 to upgrade to the commercial Maytag machine, I can vouch that it is money well spent.
I really appreciated your review & wanted to let you know. Like you, I only wish I had done it sooner!
Coupon Maven says
Laura, thank you so much for your detailed post. It’s great to know that the Maytag is such a quality machine too — and I agree that it’s kind of sad that you have to purchase a commercial-grade machine of either brand in order to get a machine that fills to the top and actually gets things clean! On the longest wash cycle, my Speed Queen is 35 minutes. It’s a dream :) Glad you found a machine that will work for you!

Hi there. I know this post is a few years old, but it looks like Speed Queen rebranded the LWN432 as their commercial TV2 model which I can find and had planned to order from Appliance Connection. I’m choking on the price, but I’ll get over that. My only hang up is that I’ve read that the warranty may not be honored if the commercial machine is used in a residential setting. Have you ever had any issues with that? The TC5 is the same as the LWN432 except that it has an electronic control panel rather than mechanical from what I’ve read here. I’d like to avoid the electronics, but should I take my chances with the LWN432 warranty being voided because I’ll be using the machine residentially?
