My syndicated Super-Couponing Tips column for the week is entitled “‘‘Do the math’ shopping surprises shoppers.“
Here’s an excerpt:
“One of the concepts that seem surprising to new coupon users is that coupon shoppers often find lower-priced deals on smaller packages of items, with coupons, versus using those same coupons on larger-sized items. As shoppers, we tend to assume that buying larger sizes saves us money in the long run.“

I find that the price differential for bulk items has really narrowed in recent years. Add to the analysis the ability to use dollars off any purchase at certain retailers while combining that with manufacturers coupons and buying name brands in the larger sizes just often does not make sense. Larger store brand sizes still seem to generally offer better value.
