My syndicated Super-Couponing Tips column for the week is entitled “Getting the last bit out of the bottle“
Here’s an excerpt:
“I like to think that I’m frugal in many areas of life that aren’t simply financial. While I aim to pay the lowest prices possible for my groceries and household items, I’m not wasteful with them once they come home. I, too, try to get the last squeeze of ketchup out of the bottle and swipe the bottom of the peanut butter jar with a spatula.”

Sometimes I get angry with myself as I try to get the last squeeze out of the toothpaste or the last drop from the dish detergent. I think I really don’t need to do this. But I can’t help it. it is good to know I am not alone. thanks for the reminder.

I save aluminum foil and disposable pans which are clean or cleanable with relative ease. I cash it in periodically along with aluminum cans etc. at a local recycler that pays so much per pound.

I make my own all purpose cleaners, using diluted Mr.Clean and Fabuloso — both of which can be purchased with Coupons. Just refill your favorite spray bottle, pour in your favorite concentrate and add water. The solution is just as effective as your favorite 409, or Lysol spray, and keeps a lot of unnecessary plastic out of the environment. Most people don’t even think about this.
You can also refill your Swiffer Solution Bottles, if you want to… and save a ton of money there. There are instructions online, if you search. I found the easiest way is to heat a mug of water in the microwave, and than take a empty bottle, and place the opening cap flat into hot coffee mug for a moment. Pull it out, and the lid twists off.
I also make a true effort to try and reuse the newspaper print, I collect for shipping things. And as for the dish soap, I typically use the nearly empty bottles, by filling them with a little bit of water to fully use the product, and using that solution for dishes that need to soak overnight.
Lastly…I truly miss the days… when Electrasol and Fantastik could be had for pennies, or free. Those coupons seemed to disappear after that show was brought into our lives. Also, it seemed like the old detergent cleaned a lot better.
