My syndicated Super-Couponing Tips column for the week is entitled “Would you move to save money?.”
Here’s an excerpt:
“‘Would you move out of state to save money? I live in New Jersey, and we have the highest property taxes in the entire country. I always thought we would be in this house for life, but our taxes are almost as much as our house payment. We pay more than $13,000 every year for a three-bedroom house built in 1908. Our house is not a mansion and could not be considered luxurious in any way. It is a basic single-family home. We raised a family here, but I find myself wondering if I can afford to retire here with property taxes of more than $1100 per month.”

So much of that is relative to other costs. My family in Minnesota likes to brag about no sales tax on groceries but I remember them paying hundreds of dollars for vehicle registration every year when they had new cars ( at the time I believe it was based on the value of your car). Our canadian friends think everything is cheaper in the US but I think a lot about their “free” health care system. There is more to consider than just your property taxes.
