This week’s syndicated Super-Couponing Tips column is entitled “Product downsizing strikes again.” Here’s an excerpt:
“Dear Jill, I can’t be the only one who has noticed how small toilet paper rolls are getting. They are getting so narrow that the dispenser built into our bathroom wall has an inch of space on the bar on each side of the roll. Do they think people won’t notice?”

Have you ever called to complain about the downsizing and had them tell you, we didn’t raise the price? Do they really think people are that gullible? Of course they have raised the price, any time you get less product and the price is the same as the larger size, they have raised the price.

Sadly, many manufacturers follow the I’ll gotten advice from outside sources that claim they have the best interest of the consumer in mind. This continues to be a “buyer beware” economy. The consumer tries to relay to the manufacturers their opinions only to fall on deaf ears. Too many times we see products discontinued and replaced with inferior products because of costs, high labor, and/or overseas production moves.

I became curious as to why a roll of toilet paper doesn’t even last a week. Actually not even 4 days to be exact. My husband and I are retired so it’s not because of the pandemic and we are home more since we were always home before. We also have more than one bathroom that we use so we aren’t even always using one bathroom. Curiosity got the best of me! Checking my year ago stash (ok oops I didn’t appropriately LIFO the Charmin) I found at the bottom of the pile an old package and decided to compare. The older package of Charmin Mega rolls has 330 2 ply sheets per roll. The newer package has (drum roll and sit down) 264 sheets per roll for a Mega roll. Not a huge difference except when one then prices the difference. Again we are being charged more (in some cases a LOT more and getting less while companies pull in the profits. One can only imagine how long a regular roll of toilet paper would last. The consumers are really getting the “short end” of the deal with companies!!!! Pun intended..
