My syndicated Super-Couponing Tips column for the week is entitled “A taxing Halloween candy issue.”
(After my sister’s shopping experience last week, I thought this was so timely that I worked with my editor to get it in ahead of my other columns!) Here’s an excerpt:
“Trick-or-treating time is right around the corner, and if you live in an area where children will be out and about, ringing doorbells and looking for treats, chances are good that you may be handing out Halloween candy. Depending on where you live, though, did you know you may pay more tax on certain kinds of candies?”

Hey Jill- Have you tried buying Twix at Jewel yet to see if the tax is food or candy? I was going to check it out last week but I never got the candy part of that pop/popcorn deal. I wonder if all the grocers have to tax the flour items as low tax or not. Thanks!

No, I haven’t — I price matched the Menards ad last week and got my candy at Walmart. Indeed, Walmart did charge two different taxes for my Snickers and Twix!
Legally, all Illinois retailers have to abide by this tax, so I would expect Jewel to too…
