My syndicated Super-Couponing Tips column for the week is entitled “‘Test it out or throw it out? Inquiring minds wonder about expired foods.“
Here’s an excerpt:
“Can you talk about how to know if expired food is still safe to eat? With the COVID-19 virus, we have been cleaning out our cabinets and found some things that I would like to still eat.“

I love “Eating History”! I watched the very first 2 episodes and forgot about it…until I read in your column. Just caught up On Demand on 3 or 4 more shows, Thanks for reminding me how much I liked it! My favorite is Old Smokey of the 2 guys and I even find this show entertaining as well as informational! It’s funny to watch their reactions. I am shocked they do not get sick from eating the rancid oils. Even the smallest taste could make them sick…and they take big bites and sips! The fruitcake was insane. He had to spit it out! Then after they dumped the crickets on the plate, the expert made them immediately go wash their hands. And they had gloves on!
I have too eaten expired things but I have also gotten sick from home made things that have no expiration dates! It was the rancid oil that got me sick from some sweet potato chips…and I ate a bunch of them! My advice would be if it smells off, pitch it. You can trust your senses. Yogurt has always been fine for me. I would bet a properly sealed and chilled cup would be safe to eats months after the date, especially high sugar ones. People in India without refrigeration use yogurt a lot. Of course the company cannot tell you how long it is actually good for plus they sell much more product when people have to eat it up and buy some more!
My husband has been going through our stockpile and pulling anything missed or lost (like your cheese!) for us to decide to eat or throw out. So I guess there is a positive to this staying at home order…we’re getting our houses cleaned and organized! When in doubt, THROW OUT!
