Dear Jill,
I live in an HOA neighborhood and purchased here eight years ago because I like the idea of the restrictive covenants. I have read the comments you have published from some individuals whose HOA’s have gone overboard with restrictions. Restricting specific types of trees or the colors of flowers is ludicrous. When I bought my house I immediately ran for office within the HOA becoming secretary and later vice president. I served for six years before resigning at our most recent annual meeting. There are a few things that should be said regarding HOA’s, first, the board members do not get paid, discounts or any other benefits for volunteering their time. Second, before purchasing a house it is the duty of a responsible homeowner to read and thoroughly understand the governing documents of their HOA. Lastly, if someone is upset about restrictions or fines, they should run for election to the HOA board. I ran for office because I did not want someone telling me where to put my garbage can, or what type of flowers I could plant. To me, the purpose of any HOA is to ensure a quality of life for all the residents and to ensure property values do not diminish due to unsightly conditions, which is what I spent my six years trying to accomplish.
