My syndicated Super-Couponing Tips column for the week is entitled “Using a chest freezer to your financial advantage “
Here’s an excerpt:
“I have shared the benefits of additional freezer storage before in my column, but 2020 was certainly a year that had many people re-evaluating the way they store food at home and how much should be kept on hand. We have had a chest freezer for at least 15 years now, and I can’t imagine not having all of that extra space to store food. “

Of all the years we used to see those freezer deals & all the free food to fill them, I never took advantage of those.
In addition to my kitchen refrigerator, I have 2 upright freezers & 2 more refrigerators in my basement ALL running.
One of my freezers, aka, :The Beast” is an old Hotpoint that is 45-50 years old. I LOVE IT!
In 2020, we gave a fridge to my sister-in-law & also gave one away free on offer up to a younger guy who really needed it & was much appreciative.
It’s funny that people have asked me if I needed another one. I’ll swap them out for an upgrade of course!
Com-Ed reduced the $50 rebate to $35, & finally cancelled the fridge/window AC unit program. (FYI: All of us paid higher electric ComEd bills to fund that program as well as all the advertising & marketing for that program!!!). The scrappers that drive around will happily take them, but free on offer up may go to a needy family.
I have a large area of my basement, very similar to a cellar, with wooden crates for fruits & veggies, multiple cabinets for pantry use, and many steel & metal racks, the fridges & freezers & another double oven. When the pandemic hit, we had a year+ supply of meat, dry goods, paper towels, toilet paper, water, N-95 masks. Basically almost everything except most dairy. (Butter we were good for probably 2 years), but other dairy, no. I’ve been preparing by maintaining a large stockpile for something like the pandemic for decades I guess. I just didn’t know it…
We gave away a lot to relatives & friends that needed it or could not find it when folks lost it last March & paid crazy prices & cleared shelves.
We still have more food on hand than we need, & donate our church & the food banks. Every 2 months or so, we fill several boxes of food getting close by the self destruct date & donate it.
As a couponer, I just end up with a lot of extra… & it’s just my wife & I (with 5 cooling units on…) Everyone needs a hobby, & mine just happened to work out into a career that I enjoy.
