There’s only ONE Friday left until Christmas — today! We have just six days until Christmas!
Today’s holiday gift ideas are dear to my heart, as I have a soft spot for the toys I grew up with – Fisher Price Retro Toys!
My children already have a collection of vintage Fisher Price classic toys that I’ve picked up for them at rummage sales and resales over the years, but I absolutely love that Fisher Price has brought back some of the favorites we grew up with too. One of the things that made these toys so great was that none of them needed batteries! They ran on windup or crank power, which meant you had to utilize motor skills and put forth a little effort for the toys to entertain you. They were also so sophisticated for their time! (Heck, they still are — I remember taking apart a See and Say with my Dad just to see the little record and speaker inside that played the animal sounds — all without batteries.)

The last one’s near and dear to my heart. I have had a longtime obsession with the Fisher Price Movie Viewer as a kid. (Remember, we grew up in an era where cartoons on demand didn’t exist! The idea that I could hold my favorite cartoon characters in my hand and watch them whenever I wanted? Amazing.) Sometime in the mid-90s I began collecting old viewers and cartridges, and I have a tote full of them now:
You might be surprised, but my sons love playing with these. There’s something about controlling the speed of each movie yourself — plus, being able to crank it backwards and watch all the action in reverse!
Most of these Fisher Price reproductions also weren’t around when my kids were little… but I have young nieces who I’m delighted to spoil with these now!
I have seen these Fisher Price Classics in stock at Walmart and Kohl’s too if you’re looking to pick something up locally.

Wow,that brings back memories. The marketing people at Mattel are geniuses. We had 4 of the ones pictured above. Sturdiest toys ever. They just don’t make them like they used to. I’ll have to see if I can find them at Kohl’s today. Thanks for sharing!

My kids had these in the 1980s, and they were used by them starting about 22 months. Purchased separately was a children’s book and cassette tape recording of it. When it was time to turn the page there was a bell that rang. (Thus they could ‘read along’ with the tape.) They were entertained for hours and hours! I know cassette tapes are dead, but couldn’t they make one that played CDs? These tape players were nearly indestructible. I would like a new one, made for use by young children. Any ideas?
