Several readers have inquired whether or not using a general CVS coupon, like an ExtraBuck or a “$5 off $25 Beauty Purchase” would also count against them for this rebate, or if this wording referred only to manufacturer coupons. I reached out to P&G, and they shared the following answer:
The $50 purchase requirement is after ALL coupons are deducted.
Additionally, I received a note regarding the upcoming 7/28 PG insert. Remember the $5 off “2 Clairol Products” coupon we saw earlier this month? P&G inadvertently left off the word “haircolor” in the text, and they sent out a notice that while they would honor the coupon on any two Clairol products, they hoped that shoppers would use the coupon for its intended purpose (haircolor.) Well, the new 7/28 PG had already gone to press when the previous insert was released, and it too contains a $5-off-2 haircolor coupon that omits the word “haircolor.”
It was our intent that the coupon be good for $5 off of any 2 Clairol hair color products. Herbal Essences is marketed separately under the Herbal Essences brand name, and the coupon for the shampoo & conditioner was found on the page following our Clairol coupon. However, we understand that the wording of the coupon does not clarify hair color, so apologize for any confusion this may have caused. We hope that you can respect our original intention of offering $5 off of any 2 Clairol hair color products, so that we can continue to provide value offers in the future.

Wow, that really stinks! I just mailed by rebate form the other day and while I was sure to make sure that my purchase exceeded $50 after using the manufacturer coupons, it didn’t after I used my CVS ones. I don’t understand how they feel they should limit the rebate based on savings we get from the store, not from the manufacturer. My deal on Olay products just turned into a costly lesson of the limitations manufacturers are placing on consumers, and a disinclination to continue my loyalty to the Olay product line.

I love Olay products but I’ve been holding out for a good sale/coupon/ExtraBuck deal planning on avoiding the rebate entirely. Even though the $20 rebate looks great… I felt all along that it just wouldn’t work out for me.
On the upside, I hadn’t realized the last Clairol coupon had missed the word “haircolor”… because I have a Clairol Nice N’ Easy shade I absolutely love that I have been using for many years, and I’m always watching for a great deal on it. So, I’m always way too excited when there are “$5 off 2 coupons” for the product I wanted to buy anyway to even consider that the wording might be interpreted as being for another product.
If they didn’t put the picture of the haircolor on it, I’d still use it on haircolor! :)

Well Clairol, maybe your hair color products should work as advertised, and the conditioner that comes with them shouldn’t turn people’s hair into a gummy, greasy mess that won’t wash out (my hair was disgusting for 3 days and I was convinced I was going to have to cut my hair off until I found a website that had DOZENS of people with the same problem- I finally had to use Dawn dish soap to get my hair back to normal). So until you can provide quality products and respect your consumers intention of buying a product that won’t make them miserable, you’ve got some nerve asking us for favors.
(Sorry for the rant everyone, but my experience with them was just awful and I had to express!)
