The secret to a winning Pinewood Derby car? One couponers can appreciate!

This past weekend, my sons competed in their Cub Scout Pinewood Derby. My oldest son is a Bear, so this was his third Pinewood Derby. My youngest is a Tiger Cub, and it was his first. Pinewood is a three-generation project in our family that my father looks forward to just as much as my husband and sons do.

Incredibly, both of my boys won first place in design for their respective Bear and Tiger divisions. We marveled at the odds of having two first-place trophy winners in the same family..!

My youngest son modeled his car after the Disney Cars’ Francesco Bernoulli, while my oldest tackled a NASCAR-style body painted to look like one of his favorite driver’s cars. Each of the boys had a Matchbox-sized toy car that they were looking at as a guide to plan their paint schemes.

Francesco’s paint was pretty simple compared to the Kyle Busch M&Ms NASCAR. After painting that car, my oldest son was meticulous about looking online for logos that corresponded to all of the sponsors on the toy NASCAR he was modeling his Pinewood car after. So, we printed little logo labels for Auto Meter, DirecTV, Pennzoil and other sponsors on the car.

But it was the sponsor under the back spoiler that delighted my son the most:

He said this car “couldn’t lose”, because “You love CVS, Mom!”
