We went to JC Penney tonight to return something and cruised the Algonquin store to look for deals. The store is being remodeled again, and we spotted many deals, especially in the small appliances department:
These Cooks electric meat slicers, originally $60, were marked down to $14! There were nine left on the shelf when I bought mine. And do you know what I bought this for? All of those free Hormel boneless hams I have in my freezer right now! I’d love to slice those thin and use them for sandwiches, but I could never justify buying a slicer just for that. But at this price – why not? They do not have this model on their site or I’d link to it, but it’s something to watch for in the stores.
Another deal? This Bella Fluted Cake Maker. It’s one of those electric countertop baking “toys” that makes mini bundt-cake style cakes. JCP has these for $25 online, but in the store they were just $5!
As we continued strolling through the store, we saw a large clearance rack filled with drapes, curtains and valances. Most were in the $2-$9 range – super cheap! However, in most cases there was one of each particular kind/style. If you had a room with one window and didn’t need several sets of the same window treatments, the prices were definitely right. The entire window treatment department in Algonquin is bare to the walls as it is being prepared for remodeling.
Other deals… my husband was proud of something he found: a whole set of shelves filled with Buffalo boxer brief 2-packs on clearance for $5. Online, they’re $22 (for two pairs of underwear? Ouch.)
There’s an aisle filled with $2 winter scarves and $2 women’s slippers.
And, the prom dresses are lining the walls of the Juniors department, which my daughter was oohing and ahhing over. She spotted a deal too, even though this dress wasn’t her style. The coral dress on the wall is $45. On a rack right in front of it are pink dresses in a similar style. The pink dresses are $10 each! They’re still $45 online. Algonquin had five of them in sizes 9, 11, and 13 if this helps anyone. $10 for a prom dress would be an absolute steal!
Other things I spotted – $8 boys’ winter coats and snow pants up to about size 5, and LOTS of jewelry in the $3 range. Happy shopping!

I went to the Vernon Hills JCP for the meat slicer. It’s original price was $80 and it’s clearance price is $30 – twice what you found it for. The cake makers were also $30.
I may try another location but I don’t really shop JCP anyway and I certainly will be wary of my local store.
