Grocery chain Safeway Inc. will leave the Chicago market, where it has 72 stores under the Dominick’s name. Pleasanton-based Safeway (NYSE: SWY) will leave Chicago by early next year. Safeway will spend the money it gets from selling the Dominick’s assets in Chicago to “buy back stock and invest in growth opportunities.”
Dominick’s lost $13.7 million before taxes in the third quarter of this year and lost $35.2 million in the first 36 weeks of this year.
UPDATE: Jewel-Osco is purchasing four of the Dominick’s locations:
– 1340 S. Canal Street, Chicago, IL
– 2550 N. Clybourn Avenue, Chicago, IL
– 14200 S. Bell Road (at 143rd), Homer Glen, IL
– 1340 Patriot Boulevard, Glenview, IL

I am very sad! Dominick’s is my favorite store in my area with the best deals by far!

One of the major news networks in Chicago has reached out to me asking if any Dominick’s employees would be willing to talk to them about this news. If you work at Dominick’s and would like to speak to the media, email me at jill@supercouponing.com and I’ll forward their contact info to you.

This bums me out, I do most of my shopping there, seem to find the best deals for what I use. CS is always good to me too, in Crystal Lake. Well, maybe we will get something better! Ultra always seems to have a lot of good deals, maybe we could get one of those!

Well, just because they’re being sold doesn’t mean they’re going out of business or will be shut down. Or that anyone will lose their job. Jewel was just sold last year and I don’t think anyone lost a job. Thinking of companies that might be interested in purchasing the Dominick’s stores, I wonder if Kroger would consider picking up the chain?

I just heard this on the news. They said 4 of them were sold to the parent of Jewel, and will be rebranded. 2 in Chicago, Glenview, and Homer Glen. The fate of the rest is unclear.

Dominick’s had recently become my more regular grocery store. I have been using and enjoying the JFU — I will miss Dominick’s.

I’m sorry so many people may lose their jobs, or at the least will have some anxiety over it. However, if other people’s patterns mirror mine, it’s not surprising that they are closing.
I stopped going to Dominick’s some years ago, and especially after they were purchased by Safeway, because I never could just get in and out without some kind of a problem. Some of them were my own fault when I didn’t understand the differences in Jewel’s coupon policies and theirs. Most other times it was for other reasons. Thus, I just cut them out, and because we have a plethora of choices in our area, I filled in and was happy with them.
We are truly fortunate in the Chicagoland area to have so many choices. It looks like this one will not exist in the same format any more, and I’m sorry for those of you who will miss these stores.
